iPhone 4s later and Ocr apps

2013-06-26 Thread Chris H

Hello everyone, this is Chris here.
Just a general enquiry really.
I am due for an upgrade in October but can actually do it a month earlier.
Because of the improved camera in the iPhone 4s and later, will apps
like Prizmo work somewhat or a lot better than they do on the 4?
Asking as I never really was successful with these apps, and a friend
who also has the 4 experiences the same. I therefore put it down to the
5 Mp camera on the 4. Ok, the 4 is good for aps like Tap Tap See, or be
it with mixed results, but a definite no no with apps like Prizmo. For
example, I can do a quick capture of say a letter, and absolutely no
text is detected at all, and yet this is in broad daylight with flash
set to on etc.

Any opinions welcome. Thanks!

2013-06-26 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Chris,

The 8 MP camera on the 4S and 5 is definitely a fair bit better. As for your
lack of success with Prizmo, have you ever had a sighted person try this? It
would tell you very quickly whether the problem is the camera or the fact
that the picture you take is not focused enough, too blurry or whether the
lighting is to blame. There is a possibility that if it is daylight and you
use the flash you over-expose the picture which could be just as bad as if
it is too dark.

Keep in mind that this fall there also will be a new iPhone right around the
time when you are allegeable to upgrade and there is a great likelihood that
this new phone will have at least a 12 MP camera and hopefully other
improvements which will allow developer of apps like Prizmo to achieve even
better results.

Regards,
Sieghard

Anytime you can improve the camera you will improve the results of your scans.
I have an iPhone 4 and use Text Grabber and get good results. Note: I didn't
say perfect results but you can edit your document to correct typing errors. I
got Text Grabber one day when it was free so I figured this would give me an
opportunity to try OCR out. I was pleasantly surprised at how well it did work.
