Thanks, Harry, I had not looked in the Library submenu, but I now found the iCloud library update option and iTunes seems to be happily matching/uploading songs. You can then see if your library looks more sorted. If not, you can simply go to iTunes -- Preferences and unlock Use iCloud Music Library then Ok, close the itunes app then reopen, go again to iTunes -- Preferences and tick Use iCloud Music Library and then OK. iTunes then begins anew to configure your iCloud Music Library. Saying that iTunes Music has still a few bugs seems a considerable understatement... Yes, it is on, but in iTunes on my laptop a lot of songs still include this “iCloud needs upload” message even though they are available and I can also play them on my iPhone.
