Re: mostly OT: Echo Link and ham radio
You might also want to search for Handi-Ham on Google. they had some excellent courses in downloadable format when I was studying for my license. Reggie, if you go to www.arrl.net you can then search for radio clubs then find one in your area and they will be able to point you in the direction of classes and testing. Re: mostly OT: Echo Link and ham radio
first, echolink does not replace radio. For obvious reasons it can't particularly in emergencies. Second, the technology is profoundly improved. The big antennas you refer to are necessary to operate on lower bands but not so for local communications. The equipment these days is in many cases comperable to the size of your mobile. On the course, 2 options suggest themselves. First, Handihams. http://www.handiham.org You'll get very thorough lessons in the hows, whys, and wherefors of amateur radio and the handiham instructers can help you clear up those things which may at first seem too much like Greek to comprehend. The other option is the books and CD's produced by Gordon West WB6NOA http://www.gordonwestradioschool.com/main/page_w5yi_training_resources.html that should get you started. Further questions, message direct. Ray T.
