Re: question about OCR on iPhone 5

Hi, based on the tech specs of both iPhone 4S and 5, the results for OCR
apps won't be much different.

re: question about OCR on iPhone 5

2012-10-18 Thread Alex Wallis

Hi list,
well, I have never got any useful results with prismo.
The reason I go for text detective is because of course it repeatedly
scans til it finds text.
Prismo is just so fiddly to use, and its extremely frustrating to snap a
photo with it, then find out its unusable, and then to have to tap
several buttons just to take another photo,
If prismo had some sort of repeat scan feature til text is found like
text detective, I might be more inclined to keep trying it.
Also, of course in prismo several buttons aren't labeled, and over all I
just find prismo clunky and unfriendly to use, unlike text detective.
The one thing I wish they would add in for the next version is a start
scan button to the results screen, as at the moment if you get rubbish
for your results you have to find the button to go back, then find the
start scan button to have another go.
I think it is all about how the paper is positioned, and where the phone
is in relation to it, I just keep raising and lowering the phone til I
get something useful from it.

Re: question about OCR on iPhone 5

2012-10-18 Thread David Chittenden
Well, here in NZ, pages are usually a4 which is 9 x 12, I think. I go slightly
toward the top of the page. If necessary, I do another scan in the lower 3rd,
but if that's the case, I usually run Prizmo. I find Prizmo has better OCR.
Text Detective gives me the general overview quicker.

2012-10-18 Thread Richard Turner
Are we talking about an i.5 by 11 sheet and you are getting the entire page?
I've never gotten more than a half a page and that seldom.
I don't have particularly long arms, but I will try that approach.
I'm guessing you are about 16 to 18 inches above the page?
Holding the phone landscape, is it over the center of the page or toward top
or bottom?

I find, with Text Detective, if I place my elbows on either side of the
paper and have my arms go straight up, I hold my iPhone in landscape
orientation at the top. This gives me a good image. I have fairly long arms.

With Prizmo, I start with the iPhone flat on the page and raise up slowly
until I hear VO say auto-focus. Sometimes, I raise until the second time
auto-focus is announced.

Re: question about OCR on iPhone 5

2012-10-18 Thread David Chittenden
Yes, OCR depends on how clear the image is. I regularly have excellent success
with both Text Detective and Prizmo. I find that Prizmo has more accurate OCR
when a clear image is taken, but Text Detective is easier to get an image
initially. Compared with my iPhone 4, both apps work better on my iPhone 5.

2012-10-18 Thread Thom
Hi Alex,
I have a 4S, and the camera is the same is on the 5,
as far as megapixels. I've come to like Say Text. The way I use it is to
place the paper in front of me. I put the camera in the very center of the
paper, lift straight up with two hands. There is an auto take feature that
will prompt you when to stop moving. Hold still, and it will do the rest.

HTH,

Thom

RE: question about OCR on iPhone 5

2012-10-18 Thread Richard Turner
Alex,
I don't have the iPhone 5 yet, but on the 4S I can only get small portions
of text with Text Detective. Prizmo is the only OCR app I can get reliable
results with. I've continued to try, DocScanner, SayText, Text Grabber,
Text4u (not sure on the spelling of that one) and Prizmo and Prizmo works
best for me.
You comments mirror that of the reviewer from Access World who put Text
Detective at the top of the list.
I'm wondering if you wouldn't mind sending pretty detailed steps of how to
get good results with Text Detective to the list?
I am pretty sure I'm not the only one who wouldn't mind this being
revisited.

Thanks,
Richard

RE: question about OCR on iPhone 5

2012-10-18 Thread Sieghard Weitzel
Hi Alex,

I have an iPhone 4S, but I can tell you that I doubt there will be any
change in how accurate OCR will be. The camera of the iPhone 5 is the same
as in the 4S except that they put a slightly better lens cover over it and
did a few things on the software end which make it a bit better. Low light
performance is also improved, but the actual camera is still the same 8
Megapixel as is in the 4S so unless you are taking pictures in poor
lighting, I doubt you find any difference.

How well Text Detective or Prizmo will work probably depends a lot more on
how well you are able to take the picture, i.e. how still you hold the
camera, how far from the page, how good is the lighting etc.

Regards,
Sieghard
