I have tried various options but this is the basic line used in inetd.

I can even connect if I type something like this into the command line:
Xvnc -broadcast -once -geometry 640x480 -depth 8.

But here's the kicker. When I do this through inetd, I get the dread
 connection closed unexpectedly error.
When I Telnet into the port while the demon is running, instead of getting
the RFB and version number message I usually see, the message is Press
any
key to continue . when Telnet connects. Then, the Telnet connection gets
 dropped.

Show me your inetd/xinetd configuration.

My suspicion is that when the demon starts up the VNC server, the window
manager (KDM) intercepts the connection and it is never completed.

Connection from viewer passed to the inetd, and inetd invokes
Xvnc server (you need '-inetd' option for Xvnc). Then, Xvnc
request XDM to manage Xvnc' X server, and everything goes well,
login window appears.

RE: Strange viewer behaviour - black non resizable screen - WinXP SP2?

2004-09-11 Thread Frank Hamersley
James,

FUS is in use on the machine but I'm not sure if any profiles were in use at
the time. Certainly the screen-save timeout had occurred because I recall
this was presented to via VNC. As a rule the other users of the system
don't log out and given it had only been turned on that morning to access
hotmail I suspect at least 1 FUS session was established.

RD has never has been used on this PC.

The only other point to make is this machine is (at 128M) quite memory
stressed and thrashes the HDD mercilessly from time to time (one day I'll
get some more RAM for it). Perhaps WinXP itself wasn't keeping its end of
the bargain in a timely fashion?

Regardless the viewer reacted quite badly to the (presumably) mixed signals
coming from the server. I will keep monitoring the situation.

Cheers, Frank.

 Config is ...
VNC4.0 Client on W2K dialup (ie.slow) to Internet
SSH tunnel terminated on Linux 7.3 DMZ host using
 PuTTY 0.55 Port 5900.
VNC4.0 Server on WXPPro SP2 FW enabled
Behind Linux 8.0 bastion iptables FW on a cable link.
tcp/5900 routed (forwarded) from Linux 7.3 to WinXP Pro host

Initial connection proceeded normally - VNC Server password
was entered and the viewer window opened to show the XP Login
screen. Selected a user id and entered the Win password.
Viewer then opened to a black screen.

Curiously when I minimised the screen and then tried to
enlarge it only opened a small window with no screen display
 - only big enough to show VNC in the title bar and the
standard _OX icons at the top right.

This window was not resizable - although I could switch to
 FullScreen (still
 black) and back to Minimised.

Eventually I closed this and opened another Viewer session
which after soliciting the VNC password displayed a VNC
Viewer:Error panel - SelectObject to CompatibleDC failed:
 The operation completed successfully.
 (0) [OK]

Will post more details when I get home and can test from
behind the bastion FW. I suspect SP2 is complicit - are
 there any other likely possibilities?

 Regards,
 Frank.

Vince,

What are the instructions you gave intended to achieve?

The problem that Mark is seeing is probably that SP2 has the firewall on by
default - he either needs to disable the firewall or add an exception for
the VNC port (usually 5900).

Cheers,

Re: windows xp sp2

2004-09-11 Thread Bob Hartung
I just dealt with this situation
I was able to resolve the issue of installing WinXP SP2 using VNC and
being able to access the system after rebooting the system with the
firewall activated. I installed SP2 on a system and then added two port
exceptions in Microsoft firewall. I then fire up regedit and searched
for the port exception names and exported them to a file. Here's the
resulting file contents...

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]

5900:TCP=5900:TCP:*:Enabled:VNC
5800:TCP=5800:TCP:*:Enabled:VNC Java
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]

5900:TCP=5900:TCP:*:Enabled:VNC
5800:TCP=5800:TCP:*:Enabled:VNC Java
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet003\Services\SharedAccess\Parameters\FirewallPolicy\StandardProfile\GloballyOpenPorts\List]

5900:TCP=5900:TCP:*:Enabled:VNC
5800:TCP=5800:TCP:*:Enabled:VNC Java
First you install SP2. Then when it finishes, uncheck the box for
rebooting and click finish. Now open regedit and import the .reg file.
Then reboot the system and you will be able to access the remote system
via VNC.

This method would also be handy for setting other default exceptions.
I had tried accessing the firewall after installing SP2 but before
rebooting but you can't because the firewall service is not running yet.

Thanks for all the replies to my question. I wouldn't have been able to
figure this out without them.

Vince,
What are the instructions you gave intended to achieve?
The problem that Mark is seeing is probably that SP2 has the firewall on by
default - he either needs to disable the firewall or add an exception for
the VNC port (usually 5900).

Subject: FW: windows xp sp2

AFTER setup of the service pack 2,
stop the vnc server with 'winvnc -kill',
then restart it with 'winvnc'
xp will ask what you want to do after restarting vnc...
for easy access, place winvnc and dll's in the windows dir.

I just downloaded sp2 for windows xp on both my local and remote
machines. When I try to connect from my remote machine, I get
Failed to
connect to server. This was not happening before the
upgrade. I have
made no changes in the vnc config.

Thanks.

Re: XDamage extension

2004-09-11 Thread Jeremy Milum
I guess I'll reply to my own question: I believe that the upcoming
Gnome 2.8 release will include a VNC server called vino that will
use the XDamande extension.
