VNC cut copy paste using xinetd does not work vncconfig not loading from xstartup

2006-02-24 Thread Financial Systems & Economic Analytics
I have VNC enterprize 4.1 running on a Redhat EL4 server through
xinetd. All configurations are as specified and VNC works with KDE desktop.

But!

The cut/copy/paste does not work. vncconfig is not being loaded at
startup. James W. in several posts (per google on vnc xinetd xstartup
vncconfig) states to add vncconfig -nowin & to the xstartup file. It
was already in the xstartup file so I moved it around without any success.

I renamed the xstartup file xstartup.old in /etc/vnc and reconnected to
my server. I found that using XVnc with xinetd does not execute the
xstartup file because I logged into the server. I found one post that
stated that xinetd and Xvnc would not use the xstartup but it did not
specify how to get vncconfig to load.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Cut/copy/paste would be nice for many
things.

Is this a bug?

Thank you
Joe

Real VNC over 52K modem

2006-02-24 Thread Mark L. Georgiev
I am very new to RealVNC and now am using it between computers, linux and
windows. I really appreciate the functionality. My question:

Mom lives on the west coast, I'm on the east. She only has a 52K dial-up
modem. When she has computer problems, I walk through the checks and fixes
with her over the phone. Invariably, right click gets mixed up with left
click and she is not conveying precisely what is happening on her box.
Terminology becomes an obstacle--the usual stuff for the home-user. I want
to work on her box via RealVNC to show her what to do and teach her how
things work. Can I have her install VNC and then work over the viewer
through her 52K modem? If so, please note special hardware configurations
that may be required. I have the standard broadband modem/router hookup.
This would be a great teaching tool.

-Mark

Re: Overcoming Proxy

2006-02-24 Thread Scott C. Best

Ben:

Heya. The current generation of VNC Viewers are not, AFAIK,
proxy compatible. I expect that to change with the upcoming releases,
but for now your options are two-fold:

1. The VNC-based CoPilot system (http://www.copilot.com)
2. EchoVNC (http://www.echovnc.com)

The idea of both of these approaches is to create a proxy-aware
tunnel between your VNC Viewer PC and your VNC Server PC, where the
tunnel is created via a 3rd party server. You can then establish a VNC
connection "across" this tunnel connection.

In the CoPilot system, the "relay server" is accessed by
subscribing customers. In the EchoVNC system, the relay server is
a piece of shareware (Windows/Linux/FreeBSD) called "echoServer".

Hope this helps!

-Scott

Hi,
I have the latest version of realvnc running on my home machine and I am
trying to
connect to it from my machine at work. I'm not permitted to install anything
on
the work machine so I must use the java viewer through ie to connect.
When I connect I can get the little connection details box to pop up but
clicking ok
gives me a 'java.net.UnknownHostException: ...' error. I'm led to believe
that this
is due to the fact I'm behind a proxy (websense) at work. Bearing in mind I
can't
install anything on the work machine is there any way to get around this?

Such two networks can never be connected to each other directly, so I
suppose both of them are behind a NAT. So you have to follow the standard
procedure for NAT port forwarding on the receiving end (that is, on the
network you wish to connect to) and connect to that's network external IP
and appropriate forwarded port.

If this is in regard to my question i.e. two router LAN connection etc., I
can connect from the machine attached to the WAN-connected router to the
machine connected via the wireless router but not the other way around.
