the easiest way to set up wine is by using winex -- www.transgaming.com.
it costs 5 bucks, and they just released a new version of winex: 2.0.1.
once you get winex installed (deb or rpm format available) you can copy
your windows TT fonts from another machine (or just make a symlink if
it's on the same machine) to $HOME/TransGaming/System/Windows/whatever.

Ok, so I know wine has progressed alot so I thought I would try it out
again and now I can actually get the application to work. I am getting
  the following output:

  /usr/bin/wine.bin Ws92_32.exe ...
Wine cannot find the FreeType font library. To enable Wine to
use TrueType fonts please install a version of FreeType greater than
  or equal to 2.0.5.

So I checked what version of freetype and it looks ok:

The application work great from a functionality stand point, It just
looks awfull, I am guessing because I don not have the fonts setup right.

Try the FAQ or INSTALL for xfstt, the X font server for
TrueType. They've got instructions for finding suitable fonts
on the www.

I dunno about XDMCP, but a
 tom@dilweed:~$ xhost +
access control disabled, clients can connect from any host
 Will turn off access controls.

When using X-Win32, I normally log into the box with PuTTY and then set my
DISPLAY variable, then launch whatever app I need, and it pops up on X-Win32.

It's real ugly, but it works for quick and dirty apps.

Once you've done 'xhost +' anyone on the Internet can
stealthily log all your keystrokes, read your xterms, etc,
it's a can o' worms. NOT RECOMMENDED. Even xhost +$HOSTNAME
has its critics. Check out ssh which does 'X forwarding',
I haven't tried it personally but I think others on the
list have, and like it. Make sure your ssh is up to date,
there's been a recent remote exploit.

 Yup.

When a problem exists in a system when new (even when it is not
discovered until later due to high uptimes) the problem is often one of
three items:
 1) defect in the board/device (board seems like a highly likely
possibility.)
 2) incorrect settings to device, or in this case motherboard. (Jumpers
mis-set, not configured as they should be, etc.)
 3) Settings in the firmware/BIOS
Haave not seen these kinds of settings, but maybe...
nvram read-only setting (maybe under anti-virus support)

Whatever the problem (even if none of the above) having the person who
assembled your new replacement board explain why this is happening might
be the best solution. They may have it as a known problem and just need
to set a jumper they forgot to set in previous replacements.

Perhaps they will take pity on you if you explain this problem was not
found since you left your machine running for many months and it only
comes up when not connected to power.

The other suggestions still stand, but I'd persue the vendor. :-/

sound cards are so cheap and easy to get working that it's insane to
wrestle this piece of garbage.

I can donate a vibra 16C to the cause. It's supposedly 100% SB16 compatible.
