[vox-tech] Sparc Linux Update

2005-01-21 Thread Richard S. Crawford
Thanks to everyone who offered suggestions and ideas. I ended up downloading
and burning a Gentoo Sparc LiveCD. From that I was able to install Gentoo on
an old SunBlade 100. It's a dreadfully slow machine; it took over two hours
to compile the kernel, and almost three hours to compile the X server.

But it's working now. Huzzah!

You should learn about cross compilation. http://kegel.com/crosstool/
is a good place to start.

Dylan, did this ever get resolved?

One course of action is to boot KNOPPIX where you know everything works,
get the list of modules that are loaded, boot back to your other system and
 manually modprobe them.

Pete,

just got the CDROM to work here is what I did:

modprobe ide-generic and low and behold in /var/log/messages:
/var/log/messages/-
ICH5: IDE controller at PCI slot :00:1f.1
 ACPI: PCI interrupt :00:1f.1[A] - GSI 18 (level, low) - IRQ 185
 ICH5: chipset revision 2
ICH5: not 100%% native mode: will probe irqs later
 ide0: BM-DMA at 0xf000-0xf007, BIOS settings: hda:DMA, hdb:pio
 ide1: BM-DMA at 0xf008-0xf00f, BIOS settings: hdc:pio, hdd:pio
hda: PLEXTOR DVDR PX-712A, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
 ide0 at 0x1f0-0x1f7,0x3f6 on irq 14
 hda: ATAPI 40X DVD-ROM DVD-R CD-R/RW drive, 8192kB Cache, UDMA(33)
 Uniform CD-ROM driver Revision: 3.20

I just noticed in my /var/log/messages file some entries that may be related
to the non-working CDROM:

...and now it seems to work...

on a side note, I noticed the following in /var/log/messages...

/var/log/messages/-
Jan 21 17:34:50 basho kernel: Sony CDU-535: probing base address 340
Jan 21 17:34:58 basho kernel: Did not find a Sony CDU-535 drive

Jan 21 17:35:05 basho kernel: Did not find a Sony CDU-535 drive
Jan 21 17:35:05 basho kernel: SJCD: Sanyo CDR-H94A cdrom driver version 1.7.
Jan 21 17:35:06 basho kernel: SJCD: Resetting: .. reset failed, no
drive found.
Jan 21 17:35:06 basho kernel: SJCD: Sanyo CDR-H94A cdrom driver version 1.7.
Jan 21 17:35:07 basho kernel: SJCD: Resetting: .. reset failed, no
drive found.

these entries showed up after modprobe pegged one of the CPUs for about 10
seconds

not sure how to interpret these messages... probably unrelated
