Thanks for all the suggestions. I wasn't able to get the import function in thunderbird to work. What I finally did is: open thunderbird and create the folders (empty, of course) Then I exited thunderbird and, one folder at a time, I deleted the folder (directory) and then re-created it using a python program that converted a maildir to mbox. Next time I opened thunderbird my emails were there.
