Thanks everyone for the suggestions. It looks to me like qoappa's commercial PDF Studio is the best option for me to handle pdf documents with proprietary features/standards. [vox-tech] Advice for dealing with adobe pdf forms etc on linux?
Hi folks, I occasionally have to deal with Adobe pdf documents that have embedded forms at work and am looking for some suggestions on how to manage this on a Linux platform. Sometimes the files are just plain pdfs, and I can happily mark up on top of them with an editor like Xournal and export my marked-up pdf. When the document has embedded forms that already have some content entered into them (e.g. by another user on a Windows/mac platform), that content does not display in evince. I can get it to display using okular, but cannot print it from okular to a pdf output without losing the contents of the form. It appears that Adobe no longer provides support for a linux version of acroread. I can get older versions of acroread binaries to install and run just fine, but any attembpt I've made to print the output (e.g. print to file, or using CUPS pdf printer device) results in either a blank pdf or ps, or worse a document that causes any editor to segfault it when I try and open it. My current strategy has been to take a screenshot of the pdf; crop convert the png back to pdf (say, in gimp), and mark it up in xournal. Needless to say, this isn't ideal. Any suggestions on how to better handle this situation? Somewhat worse than the 'ordinary' pdf forms are pdfs that have XFA-based forms. Opening these under evince or okular just shows the text: "Please wait... If this message is not eventually replaced by the proper contents of the document, your PDF viewer may not be able to display this type of document." While these do open properly and can be edited in the dated linux binaries of acroread, I haven't found any open source editor that can handle them. (It seems there are good reasons for that, as their may be security issues etc with this format, but I don't get to choose that). Any way to deal with these? (Even an online tool would be a reasonable alternative I guess). Thanks! Hi list, I've just upgraded my Ubuntu system to 14.04 / Tahr (thanks Alex for the pointer earlier). I now find that when I launch the "R" software environment, I immediately get a segmentation fault with no further warning or error message. I tried removing the relevant base package, which seemed to successfully remove R entirely from my system: sudo aptitude remove --purge r-base-core I then simply reinstalled r-base-core, but same error persists. my sources.list shows: deb http://cran.rstudio.com/bin/linux/ubuntu trusty/ deb-src http://cran.rstudio.com/bin/linux/ubuntu trusty/ I've never encountered this problem in an upgrade before. Re: [vox-tech] [netCDF #QCY-964177]: netcdf - 4.0.1 problems
You shouldn't have to configure using sudo if the netcdf file is in your home directory, which it looks like it is, since it is on your desktop. You should have write access to that as an ordinary user. That said, no running it with sudo shouldn't hurt -- presumably that command worked without error and hence you have root access? The next command is usually make, sudo make install being third (just putting it into the binaries). That is, the command sequence is usually. ./configure make sudo make install All from the directory you specify. This compiles the package from source, which can be tricky to get to work. You mentioned you are on ubuntu. Have you tried simply issuing: sudo apt-get install netcdf-bin at the command-line instead? That should install the software, automatically resolve dependencies you might be missing, and be easier to keep it up to date. Wikipedia requires the image use a free license, which they define to mean one which allows both commercial use and derivative work: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags/Free_licenses In creative commons terms, that allows licenses that require attribution (by) and the "viral" share alike (sa) clause (like GSL for software), but not creative commons licenses that require non-commercial (nc) use only or allow no derivative (nd) works to be based on the content. You should let your friend know that "to use this image on wikipedia" means others can use the image commercially and they can make derivative works based on the image. If both of those are okay, then you can upload it. So it doesn't have to be BSD style / public domain (it can require either/both attribution and share-alike), but it does have to allow commercial and derivative use. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Image_copyright_tags/Deprecated Hope that helps. -Carl On Tue, Jan 5, 2010 at 10:00 PM, Bill Broadley wrote: > > > Does anyone understand the Wikipedia policy and/or has a higher > > tolerance for understanding licenses than I do (which is admittedly > > very low). Been exploring sbackup after an earlier discussion on this list. I have sbackup set to backup to a location on an external drive which mounts on /media/DATA. However, when that drive is not mounted, it attempts to backup onto a folder named /media/DATA, but writing the data to the internal harddisk instead. Is there a way I can prevent this? I use the logitech quickcam deluxe. certainly it's easier if xp is installed first, since the Ubuntu installer takes care of everything, even copying bookmarks. Gnome has the same functions for Alt+Tab, Alt+F1, Alt-F2, Alt-F4. Also worth mentioning are KDE's katapult (alt-space by default), which lets you launch an application, play a song in amarok, check the spelling of a word or use as a calculator. For task switching remember the fun things in Compiz, such as the ring switcher (super+tab by default) or expose clone. In fluxbox (and related) you can install a program called skippy as a light expose clone. Binds F11 to expose function. Hi all, I use gnome with compiz, and I find that the evince document viewer uses a lot of my memory (>100MB!) and also doesn't display fonts clearly in some pdf articles. For these and other reasons, I've started using kde4's okular, which works very well (also has nice new features). I'd like to set it to the default (of firefox, and of gnome when I double-click on a pdf for instance), but I can't figure out how to do this. Any ideas? Suggestions as to why evince uses so much memory would also be good, I worry it means something else is wrong. Stopping compiz helps a little but not a lot. (I'm running the Ubuntu Gutsy by the way, normal i386 install) The first I noticed was an error whenever I ran apt-get update that turned out to be do to some perl-base *.pm configuration files were corrupted into binary mess. (thanks for your help earlier on this!) Most recently my /etc/environment file became corrupted, this time with random ascii text inserted and the correct text missing. In each of these cases obtaining good copies of the corrupted files and overwriting the bad ones fixed the problem at hand. Now the last round of updates included a kernel upgrade from 2.6.20-16 to 2.6.22-14. The new kernel failed to boot and I have to select the old kernel from grub just to be able to boot at all. [vox-tech] installation broken packages
Hi, I have some broken packages which apt-get (also aptitude, synaptic, adept_manager, dpkg) refuse to fix. Any idea what's wrong? apt-get -f install decides xine-ui is no fully installed. dpkg identifes the package as being in a bad state: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo dpkg -r xine-ui dpkg: error processing xine-ui (--remove): Package is in a very bad inconsistent state - you should reinstall it before attempting a removal. Errors were encountered while processing: xine-ui However, any attempt to remove, reinstall, or reconfigure xine-ui with dpkg or any apt program fails. The error I keep getting is [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ dpkg-reconfigure xine-ui Unrecognized character \xDE at /usr/share/perl/5.8/strict.pm line 1. Compilation failed in require at /usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure line 8. BEGIN failed--compilation aborted at /usr/sbin/dpkg-reconfigure line 8. Googling unrecognized character \xDE gives me nothing. (libperl5.8 is installed). I'm guessing something with my perl is messed up, but that's just a wild guess. Other packages are also not fully installed: the full output of apt-get -f install is: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo apt-get -f install Reading package lists... Done Building dependency tree Reading state information... Done The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required: cvs recode Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them. 0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 1 not upgraded. 9 not fully installed or removed. Need to get 0B/1551kB of archives. After unpacking 0B of additional disk space will be used. debconf: Perl may be unconfigured (Unrecognized character \xDE at /usr/share/perl/5.8/strict.pm line 1. [vox-tech] mutt and ldap
Has anyone configured mutt to work with uc davis ldap? I'm trying to get this to work using lbdb but no success. I can post my .muttrc lbdb.rc and lbdb_ldap.rc if it helps. -Carl ___ vox-tech mailing list vox-tech@lists.lugod.org http://lists.lugod.org/mailman/listinfo/vox-tech

Yup, that worked. Thanks all. (How can I change the default link that it tries to open?) Thanks! -Carl David T. Something like: 'lynx http://www.google.com' or 'lynx search.yahoo.com' ? I tried inputting the url you gave into firefox, and it didn't resolve to an actual address, as well running 'host' on the address. Hence I do not know where you'd be getting that url from. Maybe it's in one of your configuration files under /etc ? You could always try to grep for the url just to see where it is, if anywhere on your harddrive. Since the url has 'comcast' in it, though, my guess is that it has something to do with your ISP, though I could be totally wrong about that. === $host http://www.hsd1.pa.comcast.net/ Host http://www.hsd1.pa.comcast.net/ not found: 3(NXDOMAIN) === __ Do You Yahoo!? Yet, I just sudo apt-get installed lynx-cur (a developement version of lynx) and that works fine at reaching google. __ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo!
