Err... Uh. Since the dotfiles site /does/ seem to still exist, I think
it'd just make sense to contribute there.

The old mailing lists (on calnet) were majordomo. New new lists are mailman,
which is a big improvement.

The search engine is currently Mnogo. I used to use ht://dig, but found Mnogo
much easier to configure and administer. Highly recommended.

I chose to not use the built-in mail archiving of Mailman and instead use a
separate system, consisting of some procmail recipes, mhonarc, and a shell
script to glue them together (which actually works very well and is not
crufty at all).

Procmailrc file and mhonarc setup files are available on request.

i think this is one of the best ideas anyone has come up with a long
time.

however, i *think* it's been suggested before. if it's not appropriate
for lugod (bill's call, not mine), i'd be happy to host dotfile pages on
dirac.org.

although -- wait. isn't there a dotfile.org already?

hmm.. couldn't find it. i could've sworn there was a website devoted to
dotfiles.

but that doesn't mean we couldn't host our own!

Speaking of the website, does anyone else think a "contributed config
files" section would be really useful? A couple of months ago people
were passing around their .muttrc files on this list and I was able to
pick up a lot of useful tricks by viewing how other people had
configured Mutt. A lot of the best programs available for Linux really
require good configuration files to unlock their true power (Vim, Mutt,
Emacs, etc.), so I think a repository of sample config files would be
very useful for both beginners and experts. I think the main issue
would be coming up with a good method for submitting config files . . .
someone would have to take the time to write and test a script to handle
submissions.

What does everyone else think?

the only tradeoff (for us) is the fact that mailman has no search
utility, which is kind of a bummer. mailman is really close to being an
all-in-one package. truly a good piece of work.

I will once again tap into my powers of prediction but this time use the
evil side:
(joke)

Obviously, since this is a Linux group, and one that has discussed a name
change to be "glugod" to bring notice to the GNU part of many Linux
Distros, this web site is powered by Microsoft IIS Version 2.0 and ASP
running on MS Windows NT 3.51 on a 512 CPU IA64 system with 760TB RAID-5
volumes (of which 5kB are free after the OS installation) and 512PB of RAM
(of which none is free as we are into Windows Virtual Memory) with
multiple bonded OC24 connections to ISPs that run Windows 1900 as routers

All publishing is done via FrontPage, and pictures are made with ms paint
or Photoshop because the GIMP is wa to expensive, and is a virus or
cancer,or will bring destruction to the US economy or something.

/me looks around to see if anyone noticed.
/me creeps away to hide behind his Linux boxes for fear of being shot...
