And perhaps where to get a replacement part? Back in the middle of Oct. my computer stopped accepting AC input at all. Much like your problem I could not charge my battery. Since then I have been given an external charger and a couple of extra batteries. This has helped get me along until I was able to afford to order a replacement motherboard (refurbished). I was able to get the motherboard from: http://www.parts-people.com Their prices are fair. And they are one of the few people who carry motherboards for Dells. They also will repair them. Base price is $100 + parts. I might suggest you look at their website and if possible order a board. Assuming you find the right diode, capcitor, resistor, whatever for that damaged part, you will probably throw a bunch of heat into the board with your iron and damage another part. I suggest going to ebay and trying to buy another mother board there. I haven't even seen a schematic for a motherboard. You could go to the dell outlet, buy another 1500 and use your current system for parts. I only see a 1520 on the outlet site at the moment though. Maybe it uses the same board. Although, there are some people who are really good at soldering that can do it. I live next to Metro Electronics in Sac. I haven't seen SMT parts, but it doesn't mean that they don't have it. I have a personal articles policy on my laptops for about thirty bucks a year that covers this sort of stuff. brian -- Brian Lavender http://www.brie.com/brian/ "There are two ways of constructing a software design. Re: [vox-tech] Schematics for motherboard
There's also a new shop in Davis that might be able to handle the task: http://daviswiki.org/iFIX_ELECTRONICS?action=show&redirect=i+Fix+Electronics Who knows they might sell you the part. Otherwise Metro electronics is great but don't expect them to know anything about computers specifically. Enjoy, Alex On 12/30/2011 10:44 AM, Thomas Johnston wrote: > Hey, thanks for the replies! Hey, thanks for the replies! I have a friend at UC Davis who I am sure could do the solder job for me, if I can find the replacement part. I will make a trip to Sac and see if someone at Metro Electronics can identify exactly what the specs are supposed to be for this component. Kudos to trying to fix this yourself. There used to be a super electronics store in Sacramento called Marvac but they closed. Real shame. There is also one in downtown Sacramento called Metro Electronics. Maybe you can go into the store and show them what you need. Maybe you can hook up with an electronics teacher at a university or a jr. college? American river college has a good program out there. I have been seriously thinking about taking an electronics class to help my career (mechanic). It is amazing what electronics are morphing into on these newer vehicles. Re: [vox-tech] Schematics for motherboard
Hello Thomas, It looks like you blew an SMD (surface mount device) fuse. You would have to go to an electronics shop that sells components, like resistors and their ilk, and have someone refer you to a place that can solder these things. The other place you can find the whole motherboard is eBay. There are people that sell the parts of used laptops. No function is guaranteed there, unless the seller indicates so. Can't help you on places to go, because I no longer live in the States. Good luck and happy new year, Edwin -- On 30/12/2011, Thomas Johnston wrote: > I have a Dell Vostro 1500 that was damaged early this year by a power > surge and I am finally getting around to seeing if it is fixable.
