Re: [vox-tech] backing up DVDs (was Re: [vox] fair use / DVD questions)
Jonathan, I'd like to know more about this card. I've seen USB 2.0 PC-Cards at the various computer stores and always wanted to look into that for my laptop I have an external CD-burner that works well (but slow) in my ThinkPad's regular USB port. If you don't mind and have time: 1. Which PC-Card USB 2.0 adapter did you get? 2. Run me through the basic setup (what module, config, etc.) 3. What was the _work around_ you mentioned? 4. Any way to test the throughput that you know of? DVD-RAM is an older format for DVD writers. By older I mean I saw it in stores first. I have no idea the actual history of these devices. I saw a creative DVD RAM burner several(more than 5) years ago at Incredible Universe of all places(although it could have been Microcenter, memory is a touch hazy, must be getting old) ___ vox-tech mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://lists.lugod.org/mailman/listinfo/vox-tech
Re: [vox-tech] backing up DVDs (was Re: [vox] fair use / DVD questions)
Thanks for all the response about DVD burning. I'll have to try out cdrecord-prodvd. Pete: I actually used an external DVD+/-RW drive (and an external HD) connected to my laptop through a PMCMCIA USB2.0 card. As far as I could tell, no problems with byte transfer there at all, after I got it all setup. My 2.4.20 kernel liked to crash when I ejected the card, though, but I found a work-a-round. I also just bought a motherboard with both USB2 and firewire built in. Haven't tried external devices with it in Linux yet, but I don't anticipate any problems. Re: [vox-tech] backing up DVDs (was Re: [vox] fair use / DVD questions)
I have had my eyes on the exact same (708UF) drive for awhile now. Maybe my boss will pick one up soon (I hope). I have no idea what DVD-RAM format is, though. I think 2.0 motherboards are out there, and 2.0 support has been in the ehci driver for awhile now (since early versions of 2.4, I think). Re: [vox-tech] backing up DVDs (was Re: [vox] fair use / DVD questions)
I have done a bit of burning of DVD+R and +RW media for work here. I use cdrecord-prodvd and xcdroast for the GUI. I have successfully recorded 4.7 GB of data on +R media, but I have no experience with -R media whatsoever. We use Plextor 504A. >From what I know of DVD, can't you use a block copy (dd) to build your image, and then cdrecord to burn? Or is your problem with burning the actual image? I had lots of problems burning when I was using the cdrecord-prodvd binary. The latest version of xcdroast (0.98alpha14) seemed to help out alot with the issues that I was having. But even now, it says that there are "errors writing tracks" when the burn was completely successful, so it's still kinda weird. Any help I can give, please let me know. Got it working with cdrecord-prodvd 2.01a12 Worked with +R and +RW media, but had errors after burning 4 MB of data on the -R media I tried. Though looking at some fourms, this may be a firmware issue, as it aparently has prombelms with -R/-RW media on windows as well... The other issue is that cdrecord-prodvd is non-free. The source is not available, and you need a key to unlock it.
