The Volumio kernel is 3.12.26

If 3.12.26, then you need to fallback the kernel to 3.12 series by using
rpi-update.

You need to supply the hex version after rpi-update, for example,

rpi-update 6413da9f74871b239c5bd27d7edf90a8afeab363

Hello - installed Mubox on a Raspberry Pi B+ to which a Soekris DAM1021 DAC is connected via i2s. What do I need to do
to Mubox to get the i2S outputs working?

The Raspi and Soekris works fine with Volumio installed on the B+, so I tried the /etc/modules file from the Volumio
install in Mubox but no joy. aplay -l says 'No sound cards...'

What else do I need to change?

Try, please find out does Soekris DAM1021 DAC supports latest raspberry pi kernel (3.18.x+). In MuBox for RPi, try to
remove the device tree overlay that is dedicated for Hifiberry DAC+:

# remove the following line.
device_tree_overlay=overlays/hifiberry-dacplus-overlay.dtb

May also you can check what kernel your Volumio is using (uname -a).
