[RE:] Re: [Vserver] Linux Vserver - Feature Question

2005-03-30 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thank you for your fast answers.

I/O Limit for virtual machines. E.g. when you do a gzip job in a virtual machine, the I/O Load and cpu Load will
be quite high. To limit the cpu load is implemented i know, but the i/o load?

in detail:
- maximum write/read speed of a common sata disc 60/60 MB/s
- all of the vservers are installed on that disc

would it be possilble to limit write/read speed for single vservers to split
the speed of the disc? For vservers with many copy, gzip or in special backup jobs it would be quite usefull.

nfsv3 is working quite fine with 1.9.x, so yes ;)

there are still some issues, but I guess we can resolve
them in near future .. (several companies are already using
2.6/1.9.x in production, so it probably can be considered
somewhat production ready ;)

well, the fact that you have two of them, one in /etc
and another one in /usr/local/etc suggests that you
did somehow manage to install the tools twice ...

you should not do that, the pathes are somewhat fixed
at compile time (see ./configure --help), so please
configure them there properly, try to get rid of _all_
installed versions and reinstall the tools from the
properly configured build ...

well, depends how you define stable ... kernel folks
call the 2.6.x.y releases stable ... the linux-vserver
patches/kernel is probably at least as stable than the
kernel ...

2005-03-30 Thread Oliver Welter
Hi Tom,
Q3: Linux-vserver and linux 2.6. Is there a roadmap for getting it stable? Are there still many bugs in it or is 2.6 nearly production ready?
I have 3 Maschines up and running in production with vserver on Gentoo
with 2.6.9 - no probs until now
I setup a test box with 2.6.11 which runs fine in the test until now...

So I think it is stable enough ;)

[Vserver] More vserver oddness questions

2005-03-30 Thread Gaz Wilson

On a slightly separate note, can someone answer me the following
queries/oddities I am experiencing.

I have /etc/vserver.conf (and /usr/local/etc/vserver.conf) -
both of these files specify the VS root dir as being /local/vservers,
yet when I user vserver build, it insists on trying to put the new
server inside /vservers. It seems to ignore the config file entirely,
why is this?

Even when I "fool" the system by symlinking /vservers to /local/vservers,
when I create the vserver, the build process seems to install data into
/local/vservers/ but ALSO
/usr/local/etc/vservers/.defaults/vdirbase/ - and it is this
second location which the build process tries to chroot - is this second
location just a copy of the "proper" location used only when setting
up the vserver? I ask because it is exactly the same size as the copy
in /local/vservers - and of course my /usr partition doesn't have
anywhere near the disk capacity of /local, so this duplication concerns
me.

Again, sorry for basic questions to list, these are only "issues" I am
discovering since going to a hand-built 2.6 kernel and development
version of vservers ;-)

On that question, roughly how close are we to having a "stable" release for
2.6 kernels suitable for production environments (which is ultimately
where I intend to run these vservers!!)

Many thanks all

Hi Herbert!

Although I am using Debian, I am running the utils that I compiled from
source myself, which were indeed compiled against dietlibc

With regards to GRsec - I enabled sysctl mode, which means GRSec is
disabled from boot by default, so I am now less sure that GRSec is
at fault here, but if you, or anyone else knows otherwise, it'd
be great to hear :)

Thanks!

well, most likely the issue is still the 'debian' part there ...

(although debian is making great progress)

I would suggest to compile util-vserver-0.30.205 by hand and
make sure it uses dietlibc, then try again, if the issues
remain, we'll have a closer look at it ...

BTW: this is kernel 2.6.11.

Further investigation shows that the main problem seems to be that libc6
isn't installed in the vserver. If I manually chroot into the vserver,
I can see the package is available to install via dpkg, but when I try
to install manually, I get errors trying to change permissions on
/usr/lib/pt_chown

In fact looking back at the vserver install process, it also had problems
when changing permissions on /var/mail too.

Is this likely something to do with GRSec? I haven't done anything with GRSec
yet apart from enable a load of the options in the kernel. I haven't
read up on the rest of GRsec yet, as that's my next task after setting
up a couple of test vservers!

Anyone recognise what's going on here?

Many thanks

GW

Doh, of course it has :) Thanks for giving me a bash with the clue
stick. I am however experiencing issues with my setup (Debian Sarge,
VS 1.9.5, grsec 2.1.3, util-vserver-0.30.203) in that it doesn't seem
to install quite right (errors), and it point blank refuses to start the
vserver afterwards. Can anyone advise me as to what might be the issue,
after reading this transcript:
