Subject: [Vserver] Cloning a vserver

Hello,

I hope not to disturb with a low-level question, I still hope will be
useful to others.

I'm very happy with my vservers in general, I must say, and the users
too, of course.

I want to copy a vserver into a second one, because the second one will
run the same software.

So I had an IP .xxx and a name "old"

And I want a new IP .yyy and a new name "new"

1) I copied all the /vservers/old to /vservers/new

2) I copied all the /etc/vservers/old to /etc/vservers/new and also
/etc/vservers/old.conf to /etc/vservers/new.conf

3) I went into /etc/vservers/new.conf, into /etc/vservers/new, into
/vservers/new/etc and change there every string .xxx into .yyy, and
"old" into "new"

4) I fixed the /etc/vservers/new symlink

Now both vservers can start and stop. I can ping both IPs.

But if I enter "new" I am in "old".

What do I have left behind?

Hi Odile,

you might have missed out on the vserver hostname.
You should specify "new" in /etc/vservers/new/uts/nodename

All the rest seems fine to me but I might also be missing something obvious,

Good luck to you,

[Vserver] Debian kernel patch fails

2006-05-11 Thread Youri LACAN-BARTLEY

Hi all,

I've been trying to set up a new vserver box under Debian Sarge by
following this HOWTO

http://deb.riseup.net/vserver/preparing/

I've always managed to compile and run vservers fine thanks to this HOWTO.
However, the new box and trying to get running (based on an old 700MHz

Compiling the kernel (2.6.15) seems to work fine, however after

hmm, missed that one, sorry ...

Well, what I meant was that the error I posted about occurred at
shutdown within way under 30 seconds. If I understand correctly, a
SIGKILL is sent to all processes that do not shutdown within a 30
second time frame by default. I therefore gather that something other
than the timeout mechanism is sending out the SIGKILL.

I'll be using strace on motion to check if that is causing the error.
I might be able to solve the problem by changing init.d script
handling the daemon, who knows.

have you tried to use a 'plain' init style on that
guest? it seems to me that you are using sysv, maybe
your scripts kill the shutdown somehow?

I have switched to a 'plain' init style on the concerned guest, and to
error has occurred. So I guess that solved the problem.
Are there any downsides to using the 'plain' init style other than the
less 'human-readable' boot sequence?
And is switching to 'plain' init style the solution to all timeout
errors occurring on guest shutdown?

Thanks again to all for you for the help, and keep up the good work !

Re: [Vserver] Timeout and SIGKILL error upon guest stop

2006-04-28 Thread Youri LACAN-BARTLEY

Hi Baltasar,

there was indeed a problem with resolving DNS in the guest, its
boot/halt time has significantly shortened.
However, I still get the same timeout error every now and then. Seems to
be quite random really ...

I also noticed that the same problem occurs on other guests I considered
"stable".

The worrying thing about all this is the simple fact that it's random.

I've never used strace before, I'll try and dig into it to do a little
debugging.

If you have any advice on the way to use the tool, I'd be glad to hear it.

[Vserver] Timeout and SIGKILL error upon guest stop

2006-04-27 Thread Youri LACAN-BARTLEY

Hi list,

I've already come across a post reporting the following error upon
stopping a vserver guest:

/usr/sbin/vserver: line 85:  3776
Killed
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]" ${USE_VNAMESPACE:+$_VNAMESPACE --enter "$S_CONTEXT" --
}
$_VCONTEXT $SILENT_OPT --migrate --chroot --xid "$S_CONTEXT" --
"[EMAIL PROTECTED]"
A timeout occured while waiting for the vserver to finish and it will
be killed by sending a SIGKILL signal. The following process list
might be useful for finding out the reason of this behavior:

I tried to solve the problem by changing the timeout value in the
"sync-timeout" file as recommended. I had to create the vshelper folder
and the file ... and set timeout to 120 seconds.

  /etc/vservers/vserver-name/apps/vshelper

   sync-timeout

The timeout in seconds which is used
when synchronising vserver
startup/shutdown with the vshelper. When no set, 30 seconds will be
assumed.

However, that did not solve my issue. I still get the same timeout
error.
The server in question is running motion to handle 4 IP cameras. Since
I switched this server to a vserver guest, I just takes ages to start
and stop. Often hanging on apache2 or exim.

Would any one have any insight on this?

Thanks a lot,

Youri

I cant see your problemdoes your guest use its own IP ?

If so, all ports are reachable from "outside" without any problems,
same counts for mysql.

Just make sure that no "0.0.0.0" gathering process is running on your
host - mysql is somewhat greedy in this aspect and will bind to all
available IPs if running on the host. Thus will prevent your guest from
occuping the port.

If you share the IP it would be nearly the same, exept that - of course
- no service must run on the IP/Port used by proftp or mysql
