I use a program called 'FolderSynchronizer' who have a current version for
operating systems up to 10.1 It works very well and very quickly and is
able to be customized to suit whatever you need it to do... You can find this
on Version Tracker...

iPod introduced: audio, MP3 player
Apple's special event began slightly after its 10:00 am anticipated
start time with Steve Jobs recapping Apple's digital hub vision. Jobs
then introduced the iPod, a digital audio player with a 5GB drive
(1000 songs), 20-minute skip protection, a FireWire port, and an
advanced Lithium-polymer battery with up to 10 hours (and fully
charges in just over an hour---by an included A/C adapter or the
FireWire port). The portable device is the about the "size of a deck
of cards," with a backlit LCD display, and offers support for
playlists, ID3 tags, and iTunes. The $400 device will be available on
November 10. The Apple Store is accepting pre-orders for the device.

Note pricing is in US.
Oh well, and I was REALLY hoping it would have something to do with a
PD using Inkwell. *sigh* Will have to wait a bit longer.

Enjoy!

File synch

2001-10-23 Thread Nathalie Collins
Hello all:

Can anyone recommend a freeware or shareware utility which will synch files
the way my palm does as opposed to the way the file synch control panel
does?

It seems the file synch control panel will not overwrite older files with
new ones; it just places files which don't exist in both areas.

I would like a file synch program which will overwrite old files with the
new version at the click of a button.

Any idea would be helpful.

Regards,
Nathalie

PS I am running a T-Powerbook in 10.1 and a B&W G3 in 9.2 and am interesting
in syncing them with each other and my external fire wire hard drive

I've also been looking up EDO/FP ram as well and there are huge price
differences around the shops. In aus the cheapest i have seen is
around $140 aus for 64meg not that many suppliers still deal with it.
Over in US prices vary from $240+ to $26US for 128meg which make them
way cheaper than what you can get over here.

www.ramseeker.com gives some US price comparisons. Off that Velocity
upgrades has the $26 128 chips though how much i would trust them i'm
not sure. Other world computing has them at $31US which may be the
way to go.This is 5v EDO Dimms though i can't recall seeing the 5500

i see velocity has starmax memory that lists 5000 series for $26 but
for 64meg so that may be all that's on offer.

Here's a tricky one for the experts...

Does anyone know if Virtual PC can use a USB to parallel adapter to
emulate a real parallel port under Windows?

Serial port emulation works quite successfully with a USB-serial adapter
but I've never tried parallel... I need to program some microcontrollers
from Windows over parallel and it would be nice if I could just do it
under VPC!

Re: OS 10 or 10.1

2001-10-23 Thread Greg Pennefather
Hi Mike

There is nothing wrong with saying that you don't like OS X and you don't
want to use it. It's certainly a very personal thing and there is no right
or wrong. OS 9.x and its antecedents are like old friends we have become
totally familiar with and we love them despite their quirks. OS X is our
new friend - exciting and with the promise of a great future together. But
we're still feeling a little awkward around each other sometimes especially
when we go to do something our old friend did one way and our new friend
does it another (or not at all in the case of some printers).

I installed the PB when it came out and was impressed but couldn't use it
full time. I pre-ordered the release version and tried to use it but it was
too slow on my iBook and classic was awful. So I ditched it and went back
to 9.x.

I'm personally thrilled with OS X 10.1 and have switched to it full time. I
have an original iBook with a G3 @ 300MHz a 3GB HD (that gets pretty crowded
these days) and upgraded RAM to 288MB. So it's not a stellar performer but
it's just as usable under X as it is under 9.x.

I love the stability - even classic is as stable a hell. I use MS Entourage
all day everyday and I rarely have problems (the main one being that
sometimes Entourage starts but the windows don't appear - it behaves as if
they are there eg. Menu dimming and I can drag messages about but I can't
see them once I let go), IE 5.1.3 and MS Word preview. I love the way sleep
works so well - under 9.x sleep was broken as far as I was concerned since
9.04. I usually only reboot every 2 weeks or so although I restart classic
every few days just for good measure.

I can only hope your experience with it improves.

Cheers

Greg

P.S. I wish I was using on a machine with the same specs as yours - I bet
it would fly.

Like yourself I've been giving Mac OS X a go, in fact I've been trying it
since it was a "beta". Apple have knocked a bunch of bugs and quirks out of
it so far but still have much to do.

Just ask the neighbours I've had plenty of vocal run-ins with the new OS.

I wouldn't be recommending Joe Blogg to be running it as his primary OS, not
until Apple thinks it's good enough to ship as the default and I doubt that
will happening until 10.2, another half year or so of development away at a
guess. You'd think 4 or 5 years would be enough but obviously not.

Tip: Where possible try to use native app's and forget classic.

In my case I can live without my printer, I can live without my external CD
burner, I can live without my local network which is reluctant in the
extreme to share files with or without TCP/IP enabled and many hours of head
scratching and tweaks, I can live without accessing my particular digital
camera, I think I can live without NAT that works, but...

I can't live with performance which is mechanical and jerky too many times
when it shouldn't be, with having to type funky commands into a terminal to
make my ADSL PPPoE Internet connection perform correctly...

sudo ifconfig ppp0 mtu 1492

with system fonts that appear to lack hand tuning for the screen, with weird
UI choices and strange cartoony UI widgets that lack the sculptured nuances
of old, with hidden filename extensions and an odd lack of file types, with
not being able to get info for more than one item at a time or screensaver
choices that lock the system up and on and on the list goes.

Much of this will be polished away with more time and effort. There are
plenty of hacks and improvements that are being written daily now that will
most likely be absorbed in the new OS just like the good old days.

It can be dissatisfying, it can be frustrating and I would listen to your
own better judgement when it comes to running the new OS as your main
platform. Give it another 12 months and try again.

But for better or worse it's where Apple is going.

Cheers
Troy.

Re: OS 10 or 10.1

2001-10-23 Thread Shay Telfer

I haven't really noticed the big speed bump that many people seem to be
reporting.

Possibly you didn't put up with 10.0 long enough!

My printer (an Oki 12/n) cannot be used with OS X;

Yes, lots of drivers are currently MIA.

Classic
crashes completely (with bomb) quite frequently (though not all the time and
regardless of which application, be it Entourage or Netscape...).

Why would you run Netscape under Classic when there are some very
nice OS X browsers? IE, OmniWeb, iCab, Opera... Unless of course you
wanted to use Telstra Internet Banking :(

Preview
mucks around with images, completely miniaturising some of them;

Haven't seen that happen

the date is
not displayed correctly (admittedly a small gripe);

It seems to be displayed correctly everywhere except the menu bar
clock, and there's a hack to fix that (not that that's not an excuse
for Apple getting it right in the first place)

the Mail application
simply isn't up to scratch;

Use Eudora. (Although there have been reports of it crashing
regularly, at least you don't need to reboot!)

using Classic just seems to be very cumbersome
and unsatisfying (especially with it crashing so often);

If you use OS X applications wherever possible, you'll minimise the
problems of Classic crashing. (You did update to 9.2.1, didn't you?)

So many people seem really thrilled with OS X...am I the only one who is
really dissatisfied? I am not a computer geek and find that I get really
overwhelmed with all the different fixes that one could use to get OS X to
run...surely by now OS X should be able to run relatively smoothly.

Yes, it's still got many rough edges (it hasn't had 17 years of
refinement), but it's the path Apple's following. If you stay with
OS 9 you'll be able to get away with it for a while, but don't count
on it to run on the next machine you buy, or to be kept up to date by
Apple.

Have fun,

I installed 9.2.1 and 10.1 and have had the same great experience as Peter...
Although Epson have promised OS-X drivers for their printers.. The driver for
my Colour 900 is due 5/11/01... And as Peter said, I am happy to wait for new
fax software...

It's a great experience using OS-X... It is a shame that it costs so much to
get migration or update programs to run on it though... It was nice to get the
FREE Appleworks OS-X Update (6.2.1) after putting my hand in my pocket so much
lately

I'm sorry you're having so much trouble with 10.1. My experience is
completely the opposite to your yours. Classic works flawlessly for me,
even when I'm running several large apps concurrently. Moving data
between Classic apps and MacOS X (even using drag and drop) works
beautifully. MacOS X even launches faster than 9.1!

The only things I can't do from X are print to my BJC3000 printer and
send faxes. Since Classic works so well for me now the faxing side is
not such an issue, and as far as the printer is concerned I'm just going
to face reality and get another printer. And wait for someone to develop
MacOS X fax software.

Mac because I prefer it -- Windows because I have to.
