I had the same problem...

I cured it by simply deleting and re-typing the 'Name Server Address' in the
TCP/IP control panel.. From that point on everything has worked
brilliantly

By looking at the iPod you could see that if they tried a little bit
harder it could of been a Newton , a little bit of iPod look bigger
screen and color or mono
oh well back to my Newton 2100 for now.

But what would you have to add to an iPod to turn it into a handheld
computer that plays MP3's and has 10 hours of battery life, *5Gb* of
storage, and firewire? All you'd need really need would be a touch
screen and the right software. And behold, the iPod II.

I still belive that one day Newton shall return.

Help with Rev.D iMac

2001-10-24 Thread Doug Wilson
Help with an iMac Rev.D
iMac Rev. D 333MHz running 9.1
hard drive has been upgraded to 12 gigs
I'm trying to get the iMac to boot from a system folder on the second
partition of this machine after splitting the drive into two equal
partitions. I backed up the 4.6 gigs of info on the original drive then
initialised it into two equal partitions with Drive Setup. Restored the
retrospect file back to the second partition. I've installed a valid system
folder on the first partition and even went through the trouble of
reinstalling the System Folder on the second partition. I'm in the middle of
upgrading to 9.2.1 to see if this fixes the problem. The machine boots fine
the first partition. I need to be able to boot from both partitions. So far
no luck. The System folder is blessed. The startup disk shows bootable
System Folders on each partition. When I choose the second partition though
I was getting dropped into open firmware on restart. Now the machine simply
hangs before the Smiling Mac comes up. I've run Norton on both partition and
fixed all reported problems. Nothing serious there anyway. I'm stumped. Any
ideas?

HELP . please WAMUG folks !!

Having upgraded from 9.1 to 10.1 last weekend, I have finally got my
email working again with the assistance of a couple of fellow WAMUG
members. Only it works in a strange fashion. By the way I am using an
iMac 266 with 288 MB RAM.

I can only connect if I go into Internet Connect and then click on
Connect. I cannot connect directly from Mail.

I also cannot use the Web. I have tried using IE 5.1 and Netscape 4.7.
When I try to go to a web address from IE5.1 I get the message "The
specified server could not be found" If I first connect from within
Internet Connect and then try to go to a web address, the little
spinning timer just goes forever.

I have contacted my ISP (AAPT Smartchat) and it appears that I have all
the settings correct.

Any ideas folks ??

Re: The iPod

2001-10-24 Thread Paul S
Hi List (and Matt),

I think the cube proved that you need more than just a good product to
impress consumers, you need to have a good price as well.

After all if you're looking at the toy market for yuppies (yes, I'll
somewhat include myself here) you've got a lot of competition in this price
range.

For $500 you've got the PS2, and it plays DVDs, then you've got DVD players,
super VHS machines and low end digital cameras etc.

For $1400 you can buy a full on PC sans monitor, that will give a dually 800
a run for its money.

And for $1500 you'll be hooking the PS2 up to a flat screen Sony telly.

At $1000 or near enough (if you're lucky and you bargain) you can get a 19"
Sony monitor.

I like the product, but if all I'm doing is impressing my mates with a bit
of kit, then I'm more likely to go for the servor controlled video camera
network that I can control from my mac at work than a mp3 player/firewire
drive.

After all I've got 3cds with 25 cds of mp3s and more removeable media than I
know what to do with.

Cheers, Paul

PS - I reckon its worth $300 - $400 - IMHO (!?!)

I am one of those poor people who only pay for 3 hours a day of internet
access.

I used to have a little Control Strip module that could be reset each day
and kept record of the time I was on the internet. It kept the time
continuously until I reset it. I could then see, after several connections,
how much time I had left in any one day.

I lost it and cannot find it in Version Tracker. Does anyone know of a

Hi All!

According to the Apple Page the RRP on this is going to be $899, and
not available until later in the quarter.

On a comparison note MacSense do a similar product which is an MP3
JukeBox with 6GB of "storage", which has an RRP of $899. It isn't as
small as the iPod, but is still portable, just not the thing you
would throw into your pocket.

So price wise it isn't too far off the mark, but again if you were
going to use it solely as a hard drive then you would look at cheaper
options I'm sure. (You can get a 10GB Sarotech USB and Firewire with
the Oxford 911 chipset for about $399)

Again it's not the PDA I was hoping for ;o) but I'll hold my verdict
to I see one and can play with it to see how cool it is!

Hope that gives you a little bit of an idea.

If this is the case then adding FireWire and MP3 playback seems to make the

On the last page of the FAQ it also mentions about connecting up to

If you're talking video compression, (ala Sorenson, CinePak, MPEG4,
etc) it depends on how much quality you're prepared to lose in the
video really.

If you're talking file compression (ala Stuffit, etc.), you won't get
much saving over the video as it's already compressed.

Really what you need is some archival storage method such as DVD data
disk or tape. If you've already got a DV camcorder, consider just
exporting the video to a DV tape, it's probably the cheapest option.

Have fun,

Re: The iPod

2001-10-24 Thread Matthew Healey
Something to remember is that this machine doesn't compete with the Rio or
anything like that. It competes with the Creative Nomad Jukebox. That thing
sells for about $1000 I think. The iPod is a damn fine creation and is also
MUCH smaller than the JukeBox. Don't forget you can use it as a FireWIre
drive as well.

Oh, and as soon as one of the surgeons here saw it, he wanted me to order
one. So yes... They will sell.

RE: CAD/Design Software?

2001-10-24 Thread Darren Kam
You might want to try ArchiCAD - version 7 however is surprisingly slow -
even on a dual 800Mhz G4. GraphiSoft has promised a Mac OS X version, (in
fact they were willing to say that version 7 was OS X compatible) but it has
yet to surface. The 3D object language, GDL, is a great way to draw
furniture in 2D and 3D. However, if you're purely modelling 3D objects,
stick with dedicated 3d modelling software like Lightwave, Maya, Infini-D
(is that still being made?), Strata Studio Pro , or similar.

See and .

Good luck,
Darren.

Subject: CAD/Design Software?

Hello

Can anyone on the list recommend/suggest software suitable for CAD, Drafting
or Design for the purpose of drawing furniture in 2D and 3D? I am aware of
software like AutoCAD etc., but I'm trying to justify the continued
existence of Mac's in our office. I have heard of TurboCAD - is it
suitable? Mind you I'm not specifically looking for CAD software - just
something that will do the job.

It would be great if it worked in OS X (but I don't want to push my luck!!)

Thanks in advance...

Stefan

Re: Ipod connections

2001-10-24 Thread Shay Telfer

Does anyone know if you could set up an iPod for use in a car stereo, ie to
replace the CD/tape unit? How would it work. Could the iPod send sound to
the amp in the car? Would be valuable for me to have a car unit that I could
take out at night to reduce theft.

Get a CD to tape converter that plugs into the iPod's headphones and
then loads like a cassette into your existing tape player.
Alternatively you can get adapters that broadcast the audio on an FM
channel you can then pick up on the car's radio. Most car audio
stores should stock them.

The advantage to that is you can then remove the iPod when you're not
in the car. I'm not sure if Apple will be coming out with a cigarette
lighter charger, but it's unlikely most folks will be driving for
longer than 10 hours at a stretch anyway.

It *is* pricey, and I *wish* it as a new PDA without graffitee that they
launched, but I think it's pretty cool if yo can get it to work at multiple
locations.

It's more that to my eyes (note - this is just my own personal
opinion) for the price, it neither does anything radically new nor
makes anything radically more convenient.

My music-listening time is when I'm home, and there I have access to
a computer with iTunes anyway.

Others might find the iPod handy if they're at the gym or out jogging
or travelling on public transport.

It'll be interesting to see how it goes.

Personally I'm waiting to see what Apple's got coming in the "photo" arena.

RAM pricing

2001-10-24 Thread Onno Benschop

FYI:

Continued discussion about differences in RAM pricing is in *my opinion*
fruitless. There are too many variables to consider for a simple message
that reads: "I saw cheap RAM over at Joe Bloggs Warehouse."

To give you some idea of why things *appear* to be so different:

RAM pricing from manufacturers/wholesalers fluctuate much like the price of
oil. If someone feels like speculating, then all kinds of stupid things
start to happen. For example, at one stage last year people in Australia
were buying containers full of RAM, shipping it to Oz, then shipping it
straight back to the US because they could make a *serious* profit because
of shipping-price-lag.

Retailers may buy 10 sicks of 256Mb xyz RAM at a really good price, only to
see the price fall further. They then need to find a way of offsetting
their losses and invent a price that will see them break even (they hope).
If a retailer didn't buy when the price was high, they may be able to sell
it cheaper and continue to make a profit as the price increases.

One 256Mb stick of RAM does not always equal another stick of 256Mb RAM,
just like one pear from one orchard will be different from that from
another, both are pears, just different. RAM manufacturers are under much
pressure to come up with RAM that is cheap. CPU and motherboard
manufacturers love introducing new standards for better performance, which
start the ball rolling all over again.

So when shopping for RAM, not only do you need to consider which particular
piece of RAM fits into your computer, you need to be mindful of some of the
other variables.

In my opinion the differentiating factor between retailers should *not* be
based on price alone. If the retailer you are buying from is unable to
actually assist you, then they should not be in business, no matter how
cheap their product.

Remember: The only difference between a used car salesman and a computer
sales man is that the used car salesman knows when he's lying.

You could also try Tri-Backup (which I am sure Phil would also endorse,
since he introduced me to it). It also works in MacOS X, and works at
the click of a single button, as you request.

OS X

2001-10-24 Thread Michael
Thank you to all of you who responded to my gripes...especially a few who
went through my issues in detail!

I completely trashed and reinstalled EVERYTHING (a clean install)...but a
slimmed down version of OS 9.2.1, leaving out many applications that seem to
only be extras.

So far not too many hassles except for a period where no web pages could be
loaded...the server could not be found, regardless of which address I
entered.

In terms of browsers though, I have to use Netscape 4.77 for online banking
(it's a German bank...don't ask me why it only works with that particular
browser). I have tried IE 5.1 but Java seems to be a problem there.

Anyway...I'll give it a go...I'm kinda looking forward to Office coming out
soon...I think that may make a big difference.

Thanks again!

Michael
