RE: Domain names registers

2002-02-12 Thread Ted Burbidge
Hello All, No need to buy a domain name, simply register your own. There is a
yearly
registration fee of $200. There is a bit of back and forth needed as the name
you choose may
already be taken, as for example I own a company called Property Management
Aust P/L so I
wanted
PMA.COM.AU but this was already taken, but PMA.NET.AU, and PMA.ORG.AU, were
free, so I
registered PMA.Net.AU for myself.

I believe ISP's like Telstra and iiNet can assist in the registration process.
I pay my fee to
iiNet.

Another company called "Imagimation" can do the registration process for you
but I am not sure
of their fees.

I believe you can also do it direct with an offshoot of Melb Uni who keep the
national
registration records, and that's where the fees go, to maintain the record base.
Best regards,
Ted Burbidge.

Hi all

There are a lot of organisations trying to sell domain names. There seems
to be considerable difference in prices and of course some quote in US
and others in Australian dollars.

Has anyone any recommendations/suggestions based on experience?

1. My settings for net/web connection are wrong somewhere.

2. There is something going on with iinets servers

Hi Stewart (and others)

I also had a client who had this problem and I found that by doing
the following it worked, and fixed the problem.

1) Open TCP/IP in the Control Panels (Apple Menu)
2) Where the iinet DNS number is (203.0.178.191) add this same number
again directly underneath it, so you should have something that looks
like this:-

203.0.178.191
203.0.178.191

3) Close the window, and save the changes.

It *should* work fine from there!! I would be interested to know if
this makes a difference!!
NOTE: This only works with the iinet details, and they say on their
website (now) to have a primary and secondary DNS number. It seems if
it misses one ,the other DNS picks it up, and the "Specified server"
error disappears!

This took me 4 hours of tech support to figure out! FUN!!!

Fingers crossed!

Hi All,

Now if this was Netscape I would say to you to trash the "magic cookie file'
from the Netscape user preferences folder.

Somewhere Explorer must keep the same sort of information. I suspect
it inserts information that you do not see on screen, such as server sddress.

In this case, the wrong address.

For what its worth you may like to think on those lines

Stewart, I think we had this problem on the list before. I've experienced it
too, and it seems to be a bug in the latest version of Explorer in OS 9.2.

I thought it was just my computer, but when it came up on the list it was a
known problem, with the only solution to wait for Microsoft to update. I
also have explorer in OS X, so use that instead.

You might like to look at the archives to pick up this thread, I think it
was in the last couple of months.

2002-02-12 Thread Stewart Woods
Hi all,

A simple one but it's got me baffled.
In the last two days IE5 has been sporadically (and infuriatingly!) telling
me "The specified server cannot be found" There seems to be no pattern to
this, sometimes a link will produce this error, then click it again and it
doesn't

So, me thinks there are three possibilities:

1. My settings for net/web connection are wrong somewhere.

2. There is something going on with iinets servers

3. The prefs are corrupt for IE?

I have checked and double-checked my web settings.

iinet say there is nothing wrong at thier end

and I can't find the Explorer prefs!!!

Can anyone tell me where I might find them to trash OR does anyone have any
other suggestions as to what the issue might be here

cheers Stu

Yeah I figured that Overdrive X probably wasn't specifically designed to
handle a USB - PS/2 change up.
My best search efforts for products of similar ilk revealed a couple of
products at:

http://www.usbstuff.com/ps2.html

The Microspeed version advertised on this site looks very close to the
adaptor I have, and in the blurb it says

"Fully compatible with Windows 98, 98SE, ME, 2K & XP and Mac OS 8.6 and
up"

So I went to their web site (http://www.microspeed.com/indexfla.html)
but couldn't find any Mac drivers for this product, let alone OSX
versions. In fact I'm not even sure it is Mac compliant.

I then tried the piengineering product (http://www.piengineering.com),
which also claims " For virtually all desktop and laptop systems - Win
98 /SE /ME /2K /XP /CE (!) /Linux, HP Unix and Sun OS w/USB /Apple
iMac & Mac OS 8, 9 & OS X". However, I could only find what appears to
be an OS8.6 extension.

Finally, I tried the Belkin product, (http://www.belkin.com), but it
appears to be plug-n-play.

Gave up after this and got on with using the trackpad :)

Subject: USB - PS/2 adaptor

2002-02-12 Thread Mark Secker

From: Matt Huitson <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: USB - PS/2 adaptor

I was wondering whether anyone knows of a driver for OSX (10.1.2) which
might allow a PC PS/2 mouse to be connected to my Pismo via a newish
PS/2-USB adaptor I picked up from work? Unfortunately no idea what
brand the adaptor is - black USB plug, grey cable, purple PS/2 plug, if
that helps - and was most likely purchased for use with a PC. I tried
USB Overdrive X 10.0.0b2 without success, and a search for similar
adaptor products failed to find an OSX driver (or indeed the exact
adaptor itself). Is this setup even possible?

Pismo (500, 384Meg, 10.1.2)

Cheers, Matt.

please insert the windows setup disk ;)

I'd guess that the actual driver for the PS2 mouse might not be in your system

I'm not an expert in external device drivers BUT a PS2 mouse is
different and requires different drivers from a USB mouse.
If you take, for example, a Microsoft USB Intellipoint mouse, and
plug it in to the supplied PS2 to USB adaptor (opposite of what you
have) then plug it in to a non USB aware OS (say win 3.11) it will
not work because the system has no drivers for the USB mouse.

USB adaptors simply act as "bridge".
So with the adaptor you have, when plugged in to a Windows PC will
simply allow the user to tell the system to add a (extra) PS2 port
and route it's traffic through the USB port with the adaptors USB
device type .
The adaptor converts PS2 information (mouse movement and button
clicks) in to USB data format then pumps it on to the USB bus. The
host will then convert the USB data back to a same data format as it
left the mouse and route it through to the port you have set up for
it and then treat it exactly as if it was a PS2 mouse.

Given that Macs are PS2 "challenged" I'm unaware if anyone has
written a virtual PS2 port driver or a PS2 mouse driver for the MacOS.

I honestly wish it were otherwise I have oodles of PS2 (cyberman
3D)/games port (joysticks, throttle &rudder pedals)/PC keyboard
(PC-dash) gaming gear I'd love to plug in to my mac.
But at least with USB I know that any device I buy can,
theoretically, work with my Mac and my PC so long as the drivers are
available - in other words I can hope and pray that my USB Microsoft
Statigic commander, which works with my PC games, will some day have
a mac driver so I can use it for stuff on my mac.
