Most new HP Ink Jets have a new contact system which "damages" the cartridge
(the claim the new system gives better print head holder to print head
contact. But this limits the amount of time the cartridge can be taken out
and put back in (not good if you swap between colour and large black and
photo etc)

I have a 5400C and only have one grip (could be my firmware revision) when
running on USB (both in winblows 2k and FreeBSD) the first scan is great,
does not take long once the lamp warms up, but subsiquent scans it sits for
around 2 -4 minutes before proceding to scan. I prefer the older scanners,
but the ones after the 5400C may have fixed this issue.

I loved HP a long time ago, I am just retiring a HP 4L (due to a bad memory
module and old age (it is ~ 10 years old and has done over well over 900,000
pages which is good going by todays laser printers standards))

Unfortunately I have no direct experiance with Epson, I do know that for a
while they beat Canon and HP hands down on photo images (no one else cam
close) but things have probably changed.

Kat.

POP Accounts

2002-07-31 Thread Matthew Healey
Hi all,

IF wamug was able to negotiate some sort of deal for WAMUG members to get
POP accounts with a decent domain name...

Would you all be interested and willing to pay a small amount for it? Say...
AUS$10 per year for a couple of 10 meg mail boxes?

Yes, and although I'm still using my Mac, I've officially stopped
encouraging colleagues to support and buy Mac until I'm given reason
to believe that Apple are any different when it comes to 'screwing'
the end-user.

To paraphrase this week's MWJ article, Apple's in a financial crunch
at the moment, because costs are up, hardware sales are down, and
things are generally in the doldrums in the PC hardware industry.
They can improve this quarter's profits by getting some income from
iTools users, and at the same time reduce the cost of running iTunes
by encouraging the leeching users (warez dudez, people with multiple
accounts, etc) to go elsewhere or pay up.

And of course selling iPods to Windows users :)

Have fun,

Epsom Printer Photo 810

Anybody care to advance an opinion on relative merits
I understand the Epson Printer has some potential problem because of
circuitry built into the print head rather than the cartridge . Is this a
real problem?

Ok....so how do I buy Apple shares?

Ok, so Apple shares are quite the bargain right now.

It doesn't take genius business acumen to realise that Apple shares are
underpriced right now, and will bounce back to previous levels between now and

So I would like to buy some Apple shares as soon as possible, preferably within
the next few hours.

I'll be calling some local stockbrokers, but if anyone has any experience with
buying overseas shares, please email or call me on 0418 922 500.

MyCapture II USB Video Capture?

2002-07-31 Thread Shaun Procter

Hi All..

Just wondering if anyone happens to own a MyCapture II and would be
willing to let me put it through it's paces? I can come to you with
my laptop and it should not take long to verify how it behaves under
the circumstances in which we would be using it.

From the specs on the web page it looks like the solution we are
after but we don't want to rush off and buy a dozen of them without
making sure it is exactly what we need.

Re: MODEM Internet disconnections -Scripts ATTACHED

2002-07-31 Thread Neil Houghton
Just to update on progress so far. Many thanks to all who responded and
particularly to Bob for the scripts. Murphy was working well and as I told
Bob:
> When I last posted on this I had just been disconnected more than ten times in

> any of them!) in a week I've had only two or three disconnections!! (It
> reminds me of when I had to faultfind the electronics on unmanned submarines -

> the meter out!)
Anyway this didn't last too long and so the next time I hit problems, I
started trying scripts. I first tied the 'Apple Internal 56K RB' since it
sounded to address several potential causes - unfortunately I had two
disconnections in fairly quick order. I next tried 'Apple Int56K (V34 Only)'
and sofar this seems to have solved the problem - I just have to put up with
a max speed of 33600 - frustrating but not half as frustrating as the
disconnects!!
The above paragraph applies to my Ti G4 400Hz Powerbook.

I am still slowly getting up to speed with OSX on my new 800Hz G4 iMac. To
see if the problem was solved just by the change to v34, I selected the
original 'Apple Internal 56K Modem (v34)' script. The connection seemed
better but I still had problems. I discovered the 'Connection Log' window in
Internet Connect and found that there seemed to be two separate scenarios-

€ 'Terminating on signal 15.'

€ 'No response to 3 echo-requests
Serial link appears to be disconnected.
Connection terminated.'

Each of these scenarios seemed to be happening on a fairly frequent basis,
so I then tried the 'Apple Int56K (V34 Only)' from the scripts Bob sent.
Having placed this in the HD/Library/Modem scripts folder, I selected it in
the network modem preferences, however attempting to connect failed with

€ 'Terminating on signal 15.
Connect Script failed
Serial link disconnected.'

I then tried re-booting into OS9.2 and again found that the original 'Apple
Internal 56K Modem (v34)' script would connect (I didn't stay on long enough
to see how long the connection lasted) but when I tried the 'Apple Int56K
(V34 Only)' from the scripts Bob sent (placed in the
OS9system/extensions/modem scripts folder), again the modem would not
connect.

So the situation seems to be:
1) the original 'Apple Internal 56K Modem scripts (both v.90 & v.34) seem to
have difficulty maintaining a connection both on my powerbook and my iMac.
2) the 'Apple Int56K (V34 Only)' script which Bob sent seems to give a
reliable (if slow) connection with my powerbook.
3) unfortunately, this script does not seem to be compatible with the modem
in my iMac (either under OSX or OS 9.2)

I would really appreciate if some modem guru (Bob?) could advise
a) if the 'connection log' messages give any insight into what is the actual
cause of the disconnection problems
b) any method of getting the fix to work on my iMac
c) any way to get a reliable connection at higher speeds than 33600 or is
this too big an ask (sometimes I have had good long connections at 48000 so
the lines would seem to be good for it - is it a congestion problem?)

TIA

Neil
