Re: Mac - Windoze (solution & SMB tips)

2002-09-04 Thread Darren Kam

Okie dokes,

I can definitely sympathise with Peter's situation, and after finally
getting it all working last night, I can put it down to these things:

1) Windows XP sharing is weird. There is a new method of enabling
sharing, so to go back to the old method (as seen in Win2k and
Win98/ME) perform the following in Windows XP:

- Open up a normal window (such as My Computer)
- Go to Tools
- Go to Folder Options
- Switch to the Views tab
- Deselect simple file sharing

(this is coming from memory, it's pretty similar)

Now when you go to the Sharing properties on a shared directory you
can allocate permissions. Either set these permissions so everyone
can have read/write access or make it so only authenticated users can
have read/write access (more secure).

2) When trying to mount the Windows shared directory on Mac OS X
(10.2), just type in smb://pcname/shared_directory in the Connect To
Server (apple-K in the finder) Enter in your domain, username, and
password. Make sure you have created the username and password on
your Windows XP box.

3) If an error message comes up (error number -5025 or something like
that) it probably means your login was rejected. If this still
happens, apply the Windows XP plain password registry hack - all this
does is remove the Microsoft proprietary encrypted password scheme
(which causes more harm than good!) and enables plaintext passwords
to be used. This registry hack (or fix as I like to call it) can be
obtained from the web, otherwise I have a copy with me.

Oh, and as a final tip - if you want to go vice versa (ie connect to
a Mac OS X (10.2) mac from a PC using SMB) you have to renew your
password on the Mac OS X box. I don't really know why this is the
case, but if you have upgraded from OS X 10.1 to OS X 10.2 and have
difficulties mounting the mac on a PC, just open up the My Accounts
panel (in System Preferences) and change your password. You can
change it back again to the original password if you want, but you
have to do this in order sharing to work.

Ahh the wonderful world of SMB.

If you have any more troubles with this just give me an email - I'd
only be too happy to help.

Regards,
Darren.

Wireless Access Point Recommendation

2002-09-04 Thread Antony N. Lord
OK, after much research I'm still at a loss on what to buy! Some
Macintosh specific recommendations are warranted!

I would like to add a decent access point for the wireless machines
here in the home office :

I originally looked at PCI cards (the router / gateway / firewall
machine is a Mac running IPNetRouter and it makes sense to do it all
on one box) but it seems Cisco ($$$), SkyLINE and Macwireless are the
only options in this field. Even worse the SkyLINE and Macsense
cradles only work with their PCMCIA cards (and I've got spare Lucent
/ Enterasys cards here which I'd prefer to use if the cradle option
was pursued.)

I also eventually want to become a working perthwireless
(http://www.e3.com.au) node so either a USB or ethernet access point
seems to make more sense. Having external connectors on the back is
essential and a 100mW output would sure be nice!

I understand AppleTalk may be an issue here. It seems only Cisco gear
is supporting AppleTalk over 802.11b?

Recommendations and commentary on any experiences warmly welcomed!

Cheers, Antony.

Netscape 7 is a free 19.2 MB download for users of Mac OS X,
or a 155K active installer for users of Mac OS 8.6 or 9.x (where
the eventual installation needs approximately 36 MB of disk
space). [JLC]

Replacement Clock for 10.2

2002-09-04 Thread Goodall-Smith - Psychological Health Care
Hi,

Just found a great little program to replace the clock in OS-10.2...

I found it in Version Tracker... It's only 85k in size and the download
page is :

http://www.versiontracker.com/moreinfo.fcgi?id=7766&db=macosx

It gives all the features that you could want in a clock as well as
providing a cool pop down calendar as well... The many options all
work great and it's FREE and it looks great! Giving the option top
change fonts, size and colour as well...

I get excited easily...

Phil

PowerBooks for Sale

2002-09-04 Thread Brett Bygrave
Hi Everybody

Bought an iBook a couple of weeks ago found through posting to the list.

What we are looking for now is a G4 Powerbook, with a DVD/CDRW drive. Hard
drive/RAM specs not crucial. I am aware that some of the earlier G4 PB¹s
had problems with mother boards blowing etc. I¹d like to stay away from
those.

Basically, they are too expensive new. Worth every penny mind you, but if
you don¹t have every penny :-(

Anyway, please drop me a line if anyone has anything.

See you all at the roadshow!?!?

Mac Draw disks anyone?

2002-09-04 Thread Mark Secker
Does anybody have a disks for version of MacDraw that will run on a
G4 MacOS 9.1? If so can some one e-mail me disk image files

Once again one of my users has antique data that they wish to access
and is requesting software so old that we don't have the install
disks available.

and once again there is some urgency why is it that these things
always happen less than a week before publishing deadlines?

Thanks :)

Re: Palm Sync & 10.2

2002-09-04 Thread Shay Telfer

I actually got a pleasant surprise when I discovered that I could synch my
Palm Vx with PD under 10.2 using IR on a TiPB - it never worked with any
other version of OS X. I haven't tried USB though and it sounds like you
are probably trying over USB.

Works fine for me via a Keyspan USB adapter (or IR). I did have to go
and re-select the port in the HotSync manager though.

Have fun,
Shay
