You might suggest to have it added to the monthly WAMUG CD.

If you, like Ian, are considering installing this software please beware
of the following disclaimer which indicates that you'll need other
software - e.g. more to download - and that the software is only ready
for a unix-savvy user, and that it is not a Mac OS X user-friendly
application:

So, if you want my opinion, I'd only recommend installing this software
if you know what you're doing, because as the label says, it's not ready
for everyday use.

I do faxes fine on my Mac's running 10.2.1 with FaxSTF. Only thing I had to
make sure of was that the phone cord hooked into the computer for the
purpose of faxing has an ADSL line filter on it. Otherwise it should work
fine.

Open office download question

2002-10-28 Thread Ian Bacon
Now that that OpenOffice beta has arrived at the stage where it seems
workable I would l like to try it out. However, the download is over
150megs. This is a bit much for my modem. Is there a local site with a
copy or a way that it can be downloaded in segments?

Any advice appreciated.

Re: OSX Sleep Problems

2002-10-28 Thread Shay Telfer

So, a couple of questions:

1) If there is a problem with this driver, why doesn't the problem appear
if I boot in OS9

Because the driver was originally designed to work under OS 9. When
running the driver under Classic, the OS 9 environment has subtle
differences, which can cause problems like this.

2) Since I want to use my scanner, my choice at present seems to be:
a) Revert to booting in OS9 and retain sleep functionality
b) Stay with OSX but have to completely shut down when not working on
the computer.
Neither of these choices is that appealing! Is there any other way around
this problem.

Other options include
* See what happens if you quit Classic politely, rather than forcing
it to quit.

* Seeing if there's an updated version of the driver.
* Trying it on someone's Mac with 10.2.1 and seeing if the problem
still occurs. You might then have another reason to justify upgrading
:)

Thanks,
Shay

Thanks Shay, we seem to be on the right track here:
1) A Sherlock search for "classic preferences" returned no matches so, in
classic, I opened the extensions manager control panel, selected the 9.2.2
base set and re-started and the problem was gone.
2) I re-opened extensions manager control panel to compare my original set
with the base set to identify which were the additional extensions which
might be causing the problem. However the following message came up:
"The selected set does not match the state of your computer. Do you want to
create a new set that matches or revert to the selected set? (Reverting will
change the state of some system files.)"
I didn't like the sound of system files changing so I chose the "Create new
set" option.
3) Checked the sleep mode - still OK
4) Started enabling required extensions a few at a time & re-starting &
checking sleep mode - problem extension finally found to be N124U Class
Driver - which is the driver for my canon N1240U scanner.

So, a couple of questions:

1) If there is a problem with this driver, why doesn't the problem appear
if I boot in OS9

2) Since I want to use my scanner, my choice at present seems to be:
a) Revert to booting in OS9 and retain sleep functionality
b) Stay with OSX but have to completely shut down when not working on
the computer.
Neither of these choices is that appealing! Is there any other way around
this problem.

Many thanks for the help - it feels much better to at least know where the
problem lies!

TIA

Neil

Re: Oversize PDF files

2002-10-28 Thread Shay Telfer

I generate MS Word files with embedded JPEG graphics which I convert
to .pdf files for export.
If the conversion is done from Word in Office98 via Acrobat under
OS9.2 the .pdf file is about the same size as the original Word file.
However, if I convert the same file from Word in OfficeX under
OS10.2.1 via Print and Save as PDF the .pdf files are typically ten
times the size of the original WordX files.
PDF Consultant in Acrobat TOOLS shows that all the excess baggage is
in the graphics which have swelled out of all proportion.
Is this a known problem or am I just missing something in the
various settings?

Are you embedding fonts into the PDF?

You could also try something like PDF Compress, PDF Shrink, etc.

First of all sorry for the formatting. This message was a perfect example of
why replies need to go at the bottom only. I can only hope I've gotten it in
the right order.

Second, there's another service I've just found that offers both webmail and
pop3 access. Although their POP3 seems to be down this morning it's the
first time it's gone down since the service started. They also allow
forwarding to another POP3 address as well as a web based address book and
the ability to leave mail on their server up to 25 megs worth of space. They
allow attachments of up to 12 megs as well which can be a real life saver
every once in a while when a client wants to send you a bloated Word
document.

http://www.spymac.com

Yep, that's right, the joke of the rumours community has probably the best
free email service available on the net right now. They also give you 50
megs of server storage space for storing pictures to display in their online
web gallery space. Not a bad deal for free.

Re: OSX Sleep Problems

So, to summarise

1) Re-start the computer, all OK, sleeps normally.
2) Start classic, problem appears - put computer to sleep and it
immediately re-awakens.
3) Force classic to quit - problem remains
4) Re-start the computer, all OK, sleeps normally.

Any suggestions as to what this pattern might suggest. 800Hz G4 15" iMac,
OSX 10.1.5 (also a problem with 10.1.2) & OS 9.2.2

My suggestion is that it's a USB driver in your Classic System's
Extensions folder interacting poorly with OS X. Try launching Classic
with extensions off (from the Classic Preferences pane) and see if
the problem persists. If so, try removing USB extensions or other
drivers from your OS 9 System folder and see if you can work out
which one's responsible.

Sounds like you may need to rewrite the boot blocks on the partition.
Have you run Disk First Aid? Failing that DiskWarrior.
