Re: Mp3 conversions

2003-04-14 Thread Jason Muirhead
In iTunes, within the "advanced" menu there is a "convert selection to
mp3" option (note - I'm not at my mac right now, so the wording for the
menu option not be right) & iTune supports aiffs.

So, add the aiffs to iTunes (dropping the files or folders of aiffs into
a newly created "aiffs collection" playlist will keep them together),
select the aiffs, then goto the "advanced" menu & select "convert
selection to mp3".

Have a great easter.

Thanks for the reply Shay!

Sorry, to be more specific: I wasn't using the DHCP server because I wanted
to map ftp and ssh ports through to my computer, for when I'm not near it.

But I just made a DHCP Location, and another Manual Location, and switching
between them and the previously existing ones doesn't achieve anything, nor
does changing the DHCP Client ID.

Restarting with the DHCP Location selected results in a working network, but
on sleep, the problem returns. If I then look at the Network prefpane, the
details for IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Router have disappeared -- the text
"(Provided by DHCP Server)" has replaced them, and remains there after
changing the location and Client ID and so forth.

The computer name in the Sharing prefpane was always a single word, and
varying both the word and capitalisation doesn't appear to help.

Patrick Rice describes a problem I've had for quite some time:
Now, every time my computer goes to sleep and wakes back up, it has
lost its IP address and will not obtain a new one until I
restart it.

I believe it was on MacInTouch that the following remedy appeared,
although just now I can't locate the original. Open System
Preferences, select Network, and the TCP/IP tab. Here is the key:
in the "DHCP Client ID (Optional)" box, type any word -- it doesn't
matter -- and click "Apply Now". The Mac will negotiate with
whatever (I'm not net savvy) and in a few seconds will display a
new IP Address. You should be back in business.

If the problem recurs (i.e. another sleep), repeat the process, but
enter a different word in the "DHCP Client ID" box.

Or try setting up a different location in the network preferences and
then switching location after sleep.

Powerbook network/sleep problem

2003-04-14 Thread Ry
I have a fairly annoying network problem I am hoping some of the wizards
around here might know a solution to.

I have a small network at home, with a Billion ADSL Router/Modem, an iBook,
a 12" Powerbook G4, a Power Mac 5500, and nameless PC.

It's the Powerbook that's been misbehaving. When first started up, it
accesses the network fine. But after going to Sleep (either user-activated
or automatic) and waking again, it is unable to access the network at all.
It cannot even load the web-configuration page for the router/modem, or ping
the other computers. None of the other computers experience anything like
this.

(The problem also exists when connected via a crossover cable to a PC at
another location. Works fine, until the Powerbook goes to sleep, at which
point it's as though it is as though the cable has been unplugged.)

After waking, Netstat in Network Utility reports either a smaller Routing
table compared to previously or none at all.

The "Wake for network administrator access" option in the Energy Saver
preference panel is turned on.

The update from 10.2.4 to 10.2.5 didn't change anything. I haven't tried
reinstalling OS X yet.

Examinations of ps output prior to and after Sleeping indicates that lookupd
and slpd, are being relaunched (different PIDs and commands). Also, it shows
that nmbd is being terminated and not relaunched (though I have no idea why
it would be relevant).

And it's now beyond the very meagre networking knowledge I have. A quick
look through kbase.info.apple.com didn't turn up anything useful.

Generally a restart puts things right -- but not without frustrating me a
*lot*.

Thanks, and 'Help!' ;)

Belkin Firewire Hub

2003-04-14 Thread Severin Crisp
I have a mains powered Belkin Firewire hub so that I can run just one
Firewire device if I wish without having to have them all turned on
as you do if they are daisy chained and you only want the last one.
The hub has a power-on indicator light and lights for each of the
ports that my devices are plugged in to but none of these has ever
come on whether the devices are powered up or not or transferring
data or not. Only the power-on light is alight.
Does anyone have an explanation for this? Everything works fine but
it would be nice to see those extra lights winking at me sometime!

Ah the wonderful 'ps -ax' command.

Here is how to do it.

Open the Terminal and type 'ps -ax' without the quotes. This will list
off all the processes running on your machine. Most of them will have
fairly descriptive names. Some won't. The trick is know which ones are
supposed to be there, and which ones are not.

Alternatively there is an app out there called Little Snitch which
tells you every time your computer tried to access something from the
net. This is a easy way to see if any app on your computer try to
"phone home".

Re: Sony P800 syncing with Mac

2003-04-14 Thread Justin Bearne

Has anyone got this working following the release of 10.2.5?

Bluetooth File Exchange cannot 'validate' the P800

Setup Bluetooth Device finds the P800 and allows you to check 'use
AddressBook' and 'Connect to Internet' but not iSync.

iSync still doesn't recognise the P800

With AddressBook you can connect via bluetooth but when you try to send
an SMS it goes through the steps but no message gets sent. Also with
Addressbook when the P800 rings the name of the caller is not displayed
by Addressbook (even though contact is there), just the message
'unknown caller'.

Does this mean we still have to wait for Panther?

Those of you that were at the last meeting may remember something that
Matt did with the terminal window to look at your network traffic. I
remember he mentioned that you could observe any spyware that was
running by looking at this info. This could be applied to Eudora or
any other software if someone believes it may contains spyware.
I'm sure Matt won't mind explaining how he did it again if there's
anyone who can't remember.

Ruben A. Franke

My wife belongs to several Yahoo groups and gets no spam whatsoever.
Is it possible that the rumour that Eudora is spyware is true.

If Eudora's spyware, then how come I only get spam on one of my
e-mail accounts that I use with Eudora?

I've been using Eudora for over a decade now, and know some of the
developers, and I'd pretty much have to conclude that the 'rumour' is
no more true than the majority of the other ones you read on the
internet.
