Just gone on ADSL - modem question ?

2003-09-10 Thread Stephen Chape
I have just gone onto ADSL with Westnet.
This might seem like a dumb question, but is it advisable to switch off the
power to the ADSL modem each time the computer is switched off ?

Something have never had to think about before with the internal modem !

it may sound a bit unbelieveable but about 4 years ago iinet changed to
micro$oft hardware/softeware and since iinet's system is affected from
any virus, during the last few weeks whole sections dropped out, thus
the mixed problems with accessing the net through iinet..they never
admit that their system was cauring the problem
most interesting was in my case:
if a problem arises i disconnect...wait a few hours or days and
everything is ok...no changes done on my mac

Re: Positioning web browser frame

2003-09-10 Thread Kelly Duffy
Hi Paul and anyone else following all this,

I run OS9.2 so it isn't actually anything to do with
10 or classic/native applications for me, although I
could be experiencing something completly different,
or maybe my Mac hates me. I think it might, its done
some pretty bizzare things in the past that nobody's
been able to explain.

Strange being the windows turning grey, the mouse
cursor disappearing, I've had the computer stop
recognising all but my standard left mouse button
which defeats the purpose of buying a 4 button
+scrolly wheel mouse, and more frequently the scroll
wheel doesn't work though the other buttons do. I also
have too many applications just quit on me too often.
I don't think that I am running too many things at
once, it should be able to easily handle what I do but
memory is the only thing I can see that could be
causing it right now, though any other suggestions
would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Positioning web browser frame

2003-09-10 Thread KEVIN Lock
Don't know why, but by making Safari my default browser has solved
the problem (so far) of lost scroll bars.Opening Safari directly,
positions the frame centre and filling the monitor space. Opening a
web page with Safari as the default browser positions the page
smaller, but the scroll bar is available on screen.

I don't understand, but I am happy!

Re: Positioning web browser frame

2003-09-10 Thread Paul

Hi All

I do believe this scroll bar issue is my single biggest
problem with OSX, thank God:) Apart from the fact I cant
get my company to ditch M$ and take up Mac.

...but the mouse cursor disappears when its
in that window and other programs have areas of their
windows disappear, well, turn a flat grey colour at
least.

That sounds a little like the "grey" window is a Classic
application, not as visually athletic as native apps...

The scroll bar problem is generally a warming that
other strange things are going to start happening for
me.

I get the "off the screen" scroll bar in mail as well as
safari (possibly others too), but it doesn't seem to herald
any "strange things", I maintain 50 peecees running xp
so I know strange.
What sort of things start happening?

Could it be some kind of memory issue?

Kind regards,
Kelly

Does anyone know of a way to assign a key stroke to
the "zoom" function (the green window button), as I
believe this would go a long way to relieving this
horrible pain we are living with;)

Cheers (no really;)

I'm guessing that you left the word "Digest" in the subject.

Recommendation:

When you reply to a message that you read in the digest, replace the
subject of your reply with the subject of the message in the digest you
read, thus simplifying the reading for those who do not read the digest.
If you want to be a really helpful citizen, you could even pre-pend:
"RE:" before the subject. (Unless it already has Re: in the subject :)

Prior to what?

If the software you wish to un-install came with an installer, it might
also come with an un-installer. If the installation process was to drag
a folder across from a CD, then dragging it to the trash is the
un-installation process for that application.

You will still have preferences and other bits and pieces lying around.

For a long time I was really obsessed with removing applications that I
didn't need anymore. Over time I learned that if it's not broke, don't
fix it. What that means is that unless an application is actually
preventing something from happening, just leave it where it is.

You should also note that disk-space is cheap these days, so a few Mb of
application that you use seldomly is no big deal.

Finally, if you really want to have a totally clean install, you know
the drill. Boot off a CD, format the drive, install the software from
scratch.

Cheers,

EMF is an Enhanched Media File (Windows) and your MS Word 2001
obviously has not got the capabilities of converting it.

You will find in general that Mac Word will do a reasonable job
converting normal Windows Word documents but as soon as some form
of graphic is included into it more often than not you might as
well forget even trying.
