Panther compatibility problems?

2003-10-25 Thread Ray Forma
The following statement from the makers of Vectorworks, the top Mac CAD
program, makes me ask what other applications will not work properly with
Panther?

Columbia, Maryland (October 22, 2003)- Nemetschek North America
announced today that it will release a public beta of VectorWorks to
coincide with Apple's release of Mac OS X 10.3 "Panther" this Friday.
Company officials state that this special Macintosh beta version,
VectorWorks 10.5.1b, is intended to provide timely compatibility with
Apple's newest operating system. A final version of VectorWorks 10.5.1
is scheduled for later this winter.

Paul Pharr, CAD Manager for Nemetschek North America, stated, "We are
committed to fully supporting Mac OS X Panther and have worked hard to
resolve known compatibility issues. Panther is an exciting evolution of
Mac OS X and offers improvements in speed, ease of use, and reliability.
Releasing VectorWorks 10.5.1 as a public beta provides VectorWorks 10
users with immediate Panther-compatibility, and at the same time allows
us to resolve any unforeseen issues that may arise before the final
VectorWorks 10.5.1 release later this winter."

The VectorWorks 10.5.1 Macintosh beta updater will be made available as
a free download for VectorWorks 10.5 users from the company's website.
Prior versions of VectorWorks for Mac OS X are not Panther-compatible.
Nemetschek North America officials state that VectorWorks 9.5 and 10
users will need to upgrade to Version 10.5.1 if they wish to take
advantage of Mac OS X Panther.

For more information on the VectorWorks 10.5.1 public beta, visit
www.nemetschek.net/downloads. For more information on Mac OS X Panther
compatibility please visit, www.apple.com.

Re: new Macs

2003-10-25 Thread Shay Telfer

Am I missing something or are Apple shipping almost unusable
configurations?

Does the increased processor power in current Macs make THAT much
difference to make up for the shockingly low amount of RAM?

I didn't think OS/X was usable with less than 512MB.

You can get away with less, provided you don't run any applications
in Classic. RAM is cheap though :)

Have fun,

Upgrading to OSX from OS9??

2003-10-25 Thread Greg Colgan
Hi there MUGgers,
I've done some research on this on the net (mostly looking at Apple's site),
but would appreciate informed advice from those of you who have been there
and done that.

The issue here is putting Panther on existing machines, buying new hardware
but continuing to run pre OSX software.

I work in a small office which currently has about half a dozen macs - a
mixture of the coloured imacs, a couple of G3 desktops and a couple
Wallstreet G3 laptops. Many of these machines have augmented RAM and would
seem to pass the minimum hardware requirements for running OSX recommended
by Apple (are these specs realistic by the way?)

Naturally, all of our software is pre OSX and our major concern is that if
we go out and buy the latest Panther-equipped macs (say a couple of emacs
and a couple of laptops), will we be able to run out software? We can't
afford to upgrade both hardware and software at this stage, so it's
important to be assured that we'll have no problems in using the following
key software in Panther:

Microsoft Office 98 - esp Word and Excel
Adobe Photoshop v5.0
Adobe Golive 4.0
Now Contact and Up to Date
Quark Xpress v4
Filemaker Pro 4.1
Adobe Acrobat Distiller
Retrospect

Would appreciate feedback from anyone who has already gone down this
path...

Thanks in advance!
Greg

Excellent reading before Mac OS X Panther install..

2003-10-25 Thread Daniel Kerr
Hi All

For those thinking of installing Panther and haven't yet done it,..I would
consider grabbing this eBook before you start. It's not hugely expensive at
USD$5. I've paid for it and downloaded, and although I know a lot of it
already, it's good to have for future reference and referral.

Here is the email and link about it,...

Hope it's useful to some!

Enjoy! And have a good weekend!

Kind Regards

backup problems.mac/panther

2003-10-25 Thread Rosemary Horton

I'm having problems with my new subscription to .mac.
I launched out and bought panther today. Seems OK, but I also bought a
subscription to .mac. Most things seem to be working except backup
(which incidentally was one of the things I bought it for as westnet
backup doesn't work for mac users)

What happens is that when I click on it , it seems to open, blue
barbers pole sideways then I get a message "irrecoverable internal
error"

Anybody got any clues?

Problem with the Dock

2003-10-25 Thread Adam Lippiatt
Hello all

The last couple of days the dock has started to play up. It will suddenly
disappear and then reappear (like it is quitting and starting itself up
again). After it has done this quite a few times, it will disappear and not
come back.

I don¹t have auto show/hide on.

I just upgraded to Panther and it is still happening. I searched the
archives and saw another reference to a similar problem. It suggested
removing the file:

com.apple.dockfixup.plist

from the preference list. I tried this but the problem persists.

There appears to be another dock preference:

com.apple.dock.plist

in the preferences folder.

I just noticed, when I undertook a search, that there is now a file called:

Dock.crash.log

that has been modified today. I suppose this is because the dock is
crashing :)

Thanks in advance for any help.

Regards

Adam Lippiatt

Our 350mhz B&W G3 with 400MB RAM running OS 10.2.6 is a great MAChine!

I dont use any other macs presently only the peecees I administer at
work, so compared to them (1.6ghz-256mb running XP) this mac rules
AOK!

Almost unusable!
Almost an insult! ;)

...and my iBook 600 has 384 Mb RAM and works really nicely with 10.2.8

Re: Bluetooth Query ?

2003-10-25 Thread Douglas Sheerer
I have a Sony Clie TG-50 running Palm OS5 and I
would like to be able to utelise our internal
ADSL/Airport Extreme Network to connect via the
in built TG-50 Bluetooth and via my PBk G4 to the
internet.

eg BT Sony Clie TG50 >>>BT PBk G4 WiFi >>> WiFi
Airport Extreme ADSL Internet connection

Is this possible? I have no trouble TG50
bluetooth to Sony Ericsson T610 Mobile bluetooth.

I can't see a way to go direct to the Airport
Extreme Network as the TG-50 is not wireless
equipped.

Would be grateful of any suggestions or categoric answers eg You can't do it!!!

cheers
