Ambush ??? And this jerk is the MD of bigPond. Shudder.

I've even seen one journalist refer to Apple's "Proprietary file

particular non-proprietary standard does WMP comply?

What's wrong with just using MP3? WMP recognises it, and it actually
works on MP3 players! All of them! And we wouldn't be stuffing
around with all this platform rubbish.

Who would have thought that the old platform wars would be
resurrected in the online music scene. Music files have
historically been among the most platform-agnostic around, and here
we have all sorts of companies (it's not just Telstra) doing their
utmost to make sure their fare will not work on the iPod.

Being a tin ear i don't understand all this, however,.

Does this mean that HP have bought themselves a Lemon ipod not an
Apple iPod ?

It would not seem to be in Telestra's commercial interest to act
this way. As we still own 51% perhaps it's a matter which should be
drawn to the Ministers attention ?

Now I'll go back to listening to Peter Dawson on my 78 gramophone.

iChat requires the use of a .Mac or AIM account. Try signing up for
an AOL Instant Messenger account, I think they're still free.

Mail feature

2004-01-18 Thread Severin Crisp
I am now using Mail after many years of being a devoted Eudora user and
am very happy.
One minor glitch is annoying me. I look after my wife's email, as she
logs in only rarely. with Eudora I did not remove her mail from the
server so it remained there to go into her computer eventually. Eudora
marked mail in some way so it only downloaded to me once. with Mail it
leaves it on the server and redownloads it every time I check mail.

is there something I am missing here?

Locked mailbox

2004-01-18 Thread Severin Crisp
Mail is regularly giving me a message that one of my five mailboxes is
locked by me and warns against opening it. It opens fine with no
disasters but this is really infuriating. The offending INBOX does in
fact show a locked padlock, which I can unlock. Is it a coincidence
that the name of this account matches my login name to my ISP? How do
I fix it, I am going to change the login name anyway for another reason

Re: OT a web page with 'live" data

2004-01-18 Thread Mark Scholmann
Kathy,

if you are writing the program, then you can do a simple trick, which is to
use
.
The image is stretched upwards like a bar chart set a loop to display
many images across the page, based on the data. Set valignment to bottom,
an place in a table of something ?

The program could spit out the whole HTML web page required to display the
new data. This way, on the frequency you set for data streaming in, you
could run your program to read the data and build the new web page. The
web page then has a "refresh" command to update automatically at set
intervals.

As the program builds the chart, you could also set conditions for
"critical" temperatures or what-ever is required. This could change the
colour image to use, etc.

Another way, would be to convert the streaming data into XML format and
have a web page set up to read and display the results using XSL? or
what-ever displays XML data now-days? (Haven't worked on XML for a while).

Re: Westpac spam scam

2004-01-18 Thread Mark Scholmann
Peter,

be careful... and not for fear of bank fraud!... many of the nonsical spams
that go on are mining for legit email addresses. If your email address
does not bounce back to their system then they can be confident that it got
through if you confirm the loop by replying, then you have probably
just made it onto their Platinum/Gold list of email addresses for sale.

If it is some sort of evil spam, then the reply address would have been
faked anyway, so no-one will see the response.

The bank web site scams have got to the stage where they were using the
"faked" domain address bug in IE (not sure of other browsers), which
allowed them to link to what looked like the real Westpac domain address,
and then they mocked up the Login page "exactly". In the code we saw, the
input form fields had been simply changed to take the submitted values to
their own server.

So even if it is annoying to receive them, it's probably best to just set
up your filtering rules and ignore them!

Good luck,

Mark Scholmann

OT a web page with 'live" data

2004-01-18 Thread Kathy Quinlan
Hi all,

This is for our experienced web designers :o)

I have live data coming in a FreeBSD server through the RS-232 port (I
will be writing the program to turn the data from the incoming stream
into a format for a web page) now I need to display this data on a
webpage with graphs etc.

Think of the FreeBSD server as an OsX server (as they are both similar)

Now how do I design the web page to graph and display these values ?

The data coming in is basically power status and temperature readings of
the equipment in the roof :o)

Any help appreciated

Regards,

Kat.
