WAMUG used to do bulk purchases of gear (I remember a 56k modem
bulk-buy, for example - dark ages stuff). Does that still happen?

I expect it might be harder to get discounts out of vendors these days,
but perhaps not as hard for Apple gear as for PC hardware, which is
almost zero margin already.

The never ending torment for the WAMUG Committee.

At the moment it's more of a good-will reason.

However, WAMUG does provide it's financial members with an ozmac.com
email address which is essentially unlimited. Additionally, as soon as
I finish upgrading the server we will be able to host home pages. It
also pays for upgrades to our server.

We are working on more reason to join though.

By default, FMP searches for the beginnings of strings, so you need to

Re: WTB : G3 350, G4 400 or similar

2004-02-23 Thread Robert Howells

Oh Antony, Don't I know about Sonnet cards.

I have just been through the most torrid time and have some answers to
problems :

1.	OS9.1 instal disk loads Quicktime 4. which causes conflicts. You
need Quicktime 6 version.

2.	Hard drive must be properly terminated,, you need to get a copy of
the support document and work out the correct links.

3.	Sometimes leaving the normal cache IN helps , sometimes you need to
take it out.

4. You are probably using the Sonnet Cache init.. latest version is
2.0.3
but you might do better with the PowerLogix Cache Profiler and init.
(free at present)
The Profiler allows you to set the cache speed. There is also a
procedure

to transfer the cache setting into OSX.

5.	Ram type can cause problems. FPM is recommended in various docs but
I currently have some EDO ( non FPM ) working in a mix.

6. There are other extensions that can be problematic. Get rid of all
you don't need.

Currently I have a 7600 with G3/350 with 256 Mb
and a 7600 with G4/450 started with 128 ram now at 320.

All will work reliably when I finish setting the Extension Manager
preferences

for OS9.1 when it is being used for Classic.

Oh and by the way I have managed to load OSX on a 9 gig drive
partitioned, also
18 Gig drive partitioned and OSX on a 4.5 Gig drive with OS9.1 on a 2
Gig associated.

The latter runs slow.

So if your search is unsuccessful you probably have some other options.

Oh, I should have mentioned the drives came in three interface flavours:

parallel port (which is what I believe you need for earlier PCs)
SCSI(which suits older, pre-USB, Macs)
USB (which suits newer Macs & PCs)

The 100MB discs work in any of the above drive types

Depending on what other drives etc you have (or can borrow):

Several years ago when I used PCs at work and a very old (now) macIIvx at
home, I used to use 100MB zip discs to move lots of files back and forth. I
had a SCSI zip drive at home and there used to be a few zip drives connected
to PCs at work.

Provided you formatted the disks for PC (which the Mac could still read)
rather than Mac (which the PC couldn't read) this approach worked well for
me and I used to keep one folder of work in progress synchronised between
home & work by taking one zip disc to work in the morning & home at night.

As I recall transfer speeds between the zip drive and either computer were
pretty quick.

Huge numbers of zip drives were sold so lots of folks still have them
kicking around (to borrow) - or if this is more than a one-time-only file
transfer job secondhand ones go for a song nowadays.

Re: Mac TO PC File Transfer

2004-02-23 Thread Mark Scholmann
If both are quite old computers (with no ethernet?, etc), you could set up
a "null-modem" serial cable (which could be another drama, trying to get
one?), and use a simple modem program (eg. "Blacknight" if it is still
around).

You can then set up a Zmodem transfer of files across the link, at the very
pathetic speed of about 115000 baud (about ~5-10k / sec... yes 'k'). You
can then work out that you may be able to transfer up to 500K per minute...
(if you are lucky).

I have done this to transfer about 50 MB's over a day or so (8100/110 to
PC)... and at the time it was the easiest and readily available means of
doing so. File formats (ascii, binary, etc) can be an issue sometimes?

Otherwise, I am sure there is some Network (appletalk) set up that would be
preferable !!

Re: PB Power Supply

2004-02-23 Thread Shay Telfer

Hi guys,

Something to think about.

Back in 1988, I bought an old 2 drive SE, then in 1989, I came to
Australia and Naturally I brought my SE with me. I looked at the
back of the machine and there was a power tag, which told me that
the SE was usable both with 110V/60Hz 240v/50Hz, and since my power
cord came out of the back of my SE, and after many hours of
consideration I figured out that all I needed to do was change my
power cord. And every Mac since has had the same type of power
supply.

Actually, for a brief period some Macs had a switch on the back that
you had to switch between 110 and 240V (and a big yellow sticker to
alert you to this fact!). Fortunately the power supplies are
auto-switching these days.

Have fun,

Thanks Shay, my G4 is 2002 vintage. This is the latest version of DW just
bought from Zytech.

This is a note found on above site which may help other purchasers when
buying the latest DW and have not yet updated to Panther.

"The original DiskWarrior 3.0 CD starts up from Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar).
If you order the new updated CD (containing DiskWarrior 3.0.1), it will
start up from Mac OS 10.3.2 (Panther), which has stricter start up
requirements than previous versions of Mac OS X. The hardware requirements
to start up from Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) are as follows:"
