Re: broadband modem

2004-07-22 Thread Paul
The ISP I work for supports D-Link, an by far we have had the best
service with them...

I myself use a Billion 741GE, which is a 4 port switch router

The Billion are good, and often a cheap alternative... however, we have
had lemons... I was lucky...

Probably the best option for you would be either a DSL-504 (4 port
switch / router), it has good features, and is very reliable, and
widespread.

Or the DSL-300G, used in conjunction with a swtch. If you already have
your own switch, and therefore network, the 300G is easy to plug into
your network, and configure the DSL configuration needed...

(The earlier models: 300 and 300+ won't act as a DHCP server)

Also, as fo our account, $49.95/month for a 1GB cap on 256 is a little
steep...

We have 256/64 with a 3GB quota for $39.95/month...
and for $59.95 a month, you can get 512/128 with an 8GB quota.

whirlpool.net is a great place to research the different accounts
available...

the above accounts can be seen here: http://conceptual.net.au

It's always best to shop around as much as possible

Cheers
Paul

I have a four port Alcatel pro and I have not had one ounce of a
problem. You don't need a router with this as it is its own- look in
office works they have a few

Hi Gary,

If you are connecting more than one computer, you will need a router,
rather than just a modem.

As for what brand to get, well thats a hard one. It depends how
computer savvy you are, and how likely it is you will need assistance
from your ISP in configuring it. If you think you will need your ISP's
help, then get a recommendation from your ISP, as with over 50
different ADSL modems/routers on the market, we aren't experts in them
all :)

If you are savvy enough to configure it yourself, and won't ask your
ISP to help you, then buy the cheapest thing that has the features you
want and is AUSTEL or whatever it is thesedays, approved.

As far as brands not to buy, read the threads about people having
problem with certain modems/routers here:

http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-threads.cfm?f=82

ps. The Netgear DM602 will not work with most ISP's running PPPoE in
router mode. This can be fixed with new firmware, but I would still
stay away from it.

Eudora....more tea Vicker (sic.)?

2004-07-22 Thread Mark Secker

strange behavior from Eudora's spell checker

not for the easily offended but given the word I was typing was
"vicker" (me miss spelling vicar) my guess is that easily offended
poor typist Anglicans with hip vicars on e-mail may come across it
sooner rather than later! ... not only did the word in question come
up, but "vicar" is no were to be found on the list of suggestions
