re: Download Behavior

2004-10-11 Thread Trevor Lee

I've been downloading the 37.8 Mb Frozen Throne update off of the WAMUG mirror
site via http using Safari.
The download rate started at 23 KB/sec but over time it has gradually reduced
and is now at 14.2 KB/sec and is almost complete.
Is it normal for download speeds to gradually reduce like this? What causes
this download rate decay?

Running a Billion 5100 with a 256/64 dodo ADSL connection.

Hi Ruben,

Looks like an issue with the wamug server. Here is a comparison between
the same file (War3TFT_117a_English.bin) from Planetmirror and the WAMUG
server:

PLANETMIRROR:
http://public.planetmirror.com/pub/blizzard/war3x/patches/Mac/
Averaged 732.20k/sec. Jumped around between 800-600k/sec

WAMUG:
http://mirrors.wamug.org.au/blizzard/war3x/patches/Mac/
It started at 1meg/sec, but then went down to 65k/sec in 20seconds, then
to 50k/sec after 60 seconds. 45k/sec after 3 minutes. I didn't bother to
let it finish

condition, so only usable as parts. If still interested, please get back to

LC powersupply

2004-10-11 Thread mbrad
Hi Guys,
I was wondering if someone had an old LC, with a powersupply which
worked?, cos mines just died. I suspect dry caps, cos the swichmode won't
fire, just ticks.
 Thanks

Re: Software Update over Wireless?

2004-10-11 Thread Antony N. Lord
Check that you don't have the base station doing NAT as well as the
router connecting to your ISP. See if you can get another machine on
Wireless to do a Software Update successfully. See if there are any
ports blocked by the base station.

The "base station" is in fact a Billion 7500G ADSL modem / router / AP.

I also forgot to mention because the card isn't an Airport card it
uses the Sourceforge WirlessDriver software.

Cheers, Anton.

2004-10-11 Thread Shay Telfer
An old Lombard laptop here is using a silver WaveLAN (802.11b) card
due to a fried ethernet port.

For some reason it can download the list of available updates from
Software Update but can't actually download the updates themselves.
It keeps getting a "network error."

Wired machines in the office are not experiencing any such
difficulties and the firewall isn't reporting port access problems.

Any ideas people?

Hi Vlad

Unfortunately I don't think the original iMac can use those speakers.
The only adapter I am familiar with is called the Griffin iFire, but it runs
off Firewire, so not possible with that iMac I'm afraid.
And also it costs about $95, so you could get a pair of speakers for about
the same price anyway!

Hope that info helps.

Changing from POP to IMAP

2004-10-11 Thread Antony N. Lord
I used Eudora (6) under OS X to check my mail. Its been setup with
POP for my primary account (this mac.com one).

I've got a new desktop Mac at work and hence don't travel with my
laptop anymore so a move to IMAP to facilitate easy checking of mail
from the desktop seems wise.

Any pitfalls / dangers I should be aware of before "flicking the switch?"

I've got a couple of large (25Mb) Eudora mailboxes but I don't see
these been any great trouble.

Cheers, Antony.

Cashies etc Re: Slight Warning

2004-10-11 Thread Mark Secker
and an inveterate bargain hunter I've haunted more second hand and
pawn broker shops than I'd care to admit.
some of the Cash Converter shops have even less than not a clue about
computers (or at least know that there are people with no clue who
are gullible enough) a couple of years back (2001/2002) the Osbourne
Park shop had an old Mac Classic that they had priced at $800, which
was $100 more than we were selling off second hand Bondi Blue iMacs
at the time.

The Cash Converters at Vic Park last year had a Apple QuickTake 100
digital camera for $600 (and if think they might have been a
temporary aberration a few weeks back I was in there and they had a
beat up Canon A70 for over $600 - they can be purchased new for under
$300).

If you want a word of warning about buying electric guitars
(particularly a specific US made brand of guitars) at certain pawn
brokers e-mail me off list for the dirt.

I purchased and then returned a Bronze Lombard 400 mghz powerbook
from Cash Converters Osbourn Park.

Problems with it DVD drive flaky and when DVD inserted screen freezes
