USB

2004-10-22 Thread P.Bull
I have just bought an Iomega CD RW and installed the software. My imac 350
running OS9 does not see it. The burner does not appear on the desktop and I
suspect it might be a USB problem. The burner supports USB 1.1 and 2, but I
fear the iMac might be USB 1.0. How do I find out if it is 1.0 or 1.1 and
can I upgrade it to 1.1 if required?
Thanks,
Peter Bull

Try Apple System Profiler. I think there is a section in the OS 9 version
that shows what version of USB you are running.

The burner it's self will not appear on the desktop.

if you go in to the apple system profiler program does it appear in
the list of USB devices?

going back a few years and off the top of my head you may need to run
a firmware update on your iMac though if you are running 9 you
probably already have.

USB 2 devices on USB 1 busses will function as best as they can given
the lower bandwidth and with CD burners means pretty much a maximum
burn speed of about 4x (I have burnt faster though it becomes
unreliable)

my experience with desktop CD burning in classic was that it was
pretty hit and miss and always used toast instead.

I believe the answer is Yes, but at USB1 speed as USB2 is meant to
be backward compatible.

Re: USB2 with OS9.1

2004-10-22 Thread Mark Secker
usually (read pretty much 100% or the time) a device drivers are bus
independent, that being the whole point.

The bus (USB) drivers handle the bus specifications and in this case
USB1 is a sub set of USB2 and therefor backwards compatible. It maybe
that a device such as a video conferencing camera, CD burner or a
Audio input/output device will query bus speed and , seeing the
slowness of USB1 over it's recommended USB2 speed may recommend or
force a more limited maximum performance (less frames per second
etc) than would be achievable under USB2 (that recommended or forced
maximum could even be forget it buster)
