Streaming Video recording of tonight's meeting

2005-05-03 Thread Martin Hill
You'll find the streaming video recordings of part 1 of the WAMUG meeting
tonight should appear here later this evening (Tuesday) once the Curtin
iLectures system has finished processing it:

http://ilectures.curtin.edu.au/ilectures/ilectures.lasso?ut=692

No doubt Matt will put a link to it on the WAMUG website. :-)

Let me know if anyone has any problems viewing it.

Thanks to Susan Hastings for the great camera-work at short notice.

Part II of the evening will be up later tomorrow when I get a chance to
digitise the second video tape.

WestNet & Macs Update

2005-05-03 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi WAMUGers,

WestNet have got back to me with these comments:

Quote:
"Thanks Ronni, this is more good feedback. I’ve suggested to our
marketing team that we gain permission from Apple to put a pointer
to .Mac on our Express Backup page, to give Mac users an option for
online backup. If we ever replace Express Backup with a new online
backup product, we’ll be aiming to ensure that it works with Macs.

It’s good to hear that the general feeling is positive towards
Westnet. We’re certainly trying as hard as we can to look after Mac
users."

End of Quote:

Well, we didn't get all the results we wanted, but at least WestNet
are hearing us, and are trying to look after Mac Users. Which is a
lot better than most ISP's.
I have asked for a reply to our Craig Ringer's comments on the Flash
on 'My Place' & CPU usage.

I will 'keep on our case' with WestNet Management. I have a 'healthy
repose' with them.

Cheers,
Ronni

Longshot - Java update giving me a headache

2005-05-03 Thread Toby Oldham

The most recent java update has broken a feature of the content
management system my business uses (Farcry for those who know about
content management systems).

The problem seems to stem from an incompatibility between The
javascript the CMS uses to render a live timer 'counts down' that
describes how long a user has left before they're logged out of the
system if they don't make any changes to the site ...

... and a wysiwyg editing (java program) called Edit-on Pro made by a
company called Realobjects in Germany.

Each second the timer 'counts' causes the embedded java app window to
refresh, which causes a per-second flickering that gives me a
headache. Needless to say this didn't happen before 10.3.9 - happens
under 10.4 also.

Tried installing the JSA v5 beta on the off chance it may fix things
- nada. Does anyone know if I can install an earlier version of java
without any penalties to other features of 10.4?

Figure I'll e-mail Farcry, Realobjects and Apple also in any case,
but if anyone has any suggestions I'd love to hear them.

Cheers,
Tobes.

P.S. The whole thing works just fine under windows, so I'll probably
jump onto a windows box until it's fixed, but I wish I didn't have to
run 2 boxes just to update a website. :)

Have camera, could video the meeting tonight.

I'd suggest that would be the better version, as it allows those who
cannot make the meeting (in the bush or working their fingers to the
bone) still see what happened, and it makes sure that people still
turn up rather than watch it on the web!

Anyway, I think that those who turn up now will continue whether it

Just have to make it small enough to stream from the wamug server
that will don't kill bandwidth limits (all those on broadband2 don't

Matt, are you thinking that we could do it in real time, or would we make
the video, and put it up for people to access later? Susan

Have camera, could video the meeting tonight.

Ummm.. when there is someone that wants to do it.

Please understand that these meetings happen because we (the
committee) like doing it. Streaming the meeting, while technically
not difficult would require quite a bit of time to set up. Time is
something that everyone on the committee has a desperate lack of.

If you really really really really want it, and can get a few more
people that want it as well, then we can look at doing it.

If there is someone out there that would like to do it (and by do, I
mean organise the camera and a laptop to encode the video as well as
be there to operate said equipment) then please speak up. WAMUG can
handle the streaming of the video from our server on WAIX.

What we don't want is for people to watch the stream and not come to
the meeting!

Tiger & Deja Vu 3.0.2

2005-05-03 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi People,

The current version of Deja Vu 3.0.2 will not work under Tiger.
A Tiger - compatible version will be released very soon.

Toast Titanium 6.0.9 has problems with Tiger also.
Roxio have said this:
"This is just a quick community update to let you know we've just
about completed the latest Toast 6, Jam 6, and Popcorn updates.
These free updates address some minor issues that may be encountered
when using Tiger (Mac OS X v10.4). While the problems will not
affect the majority of users, we're working hard to make these
available quickly. Full details will be available soon when these
are posted."

LaserWriters to go...

2005-05-03 Thread Shay Telfer

Hi...

If you're interested in any of the following for spare parts or
attempted resurrection:

1 x LaserWriter IINTX (status unknown, my brief tests indicate it
swallows print jobs, never to be seen again)
1 x LaserWriter IINTX (Out of paper and jam lights flash, --> I/O or
controller failure)
1 x LaserWriter IINT (Out of paper and jam lights flash, -->I/O or
controller failure)

I'll load them in the car and bring them to the meeting tonight if
anyone's interested. (Offers are also gratefully accepted if you want
to pay for the privilege and feed the hungry mouths :)

Note that none of these printers have Ethernet built in and would
require some form of EtherTalk print server. Assuming you could get
them working in the first place :)

I've also got a brand new toner cartridge to go to the first person
who wants one of the above printers (with much thanks to Daniel)

Morning All,
Part II
After many hours in the wee morn I have installed Tigger on PB 17"
1.5 1gb Mem 128mb video.
Yes their are issues with QT7, some I have answers and some I still
trying to replicate.

So, I am searching to replicate QT7 problems with Tigger specifically
on PB, I have access to Dual G4's with 10.3.9 installed and some
friends with various configurations.

If you could supply info of Problem, relevant URL etc, I will test
and research problem then report.

The one thing I am seeing in QT7 is it does not download or start to

QT7 does seem to put extreme strain on systems, but it is also
attempting to take the next step on the moon. All those years ago
when codecs for DV and Firewire emerged their was some serious
issues, same again we all need to help to make the next step smooth
and sooner.

Just be aware that apple have broken Quicktime7. All mic inputs
(builtin and
USB) have a problem in all applications. The audio is broken and
garbled, if
it works at all. Its broken so much there is even a Quicktime7 un-
installer

on the apple updates page.

Problems of mic inputs not sure, but I suspect from visiting a few
sites during the early morning it is people attempting to run QT7 in
HD mode with below specification machinery. HD and H264 require some
serious hardware to utilise even in playback. Now me sees why Xgrid
is a very serious player in a digital studio environment, to encode
and render behemoth of files.

Un-installer:- This is for those whom have upgrade QT whilst still in
10.3.x, but the un-installer is for 10.3.9 only. So, this is causing
a few problems as people are not reading relevant information.

Well after spending the most part of the day in backup land and
clean install of Tigger on friends PB 17" 2004 vintage. I spent the
last 2 and a half hours editing and compositing, with audio
external mike and internal mike plus recordings off DV tape which
has been processed through Audacity and arranged edited for 5.1 via
AC3 in Soundtrack. Just outputting into DVDSP all seems to be
playing through simulator ( cannot wait to be able to do Dolby
direct and output via sim to 6.1 sound system on the run)
Formatting and Build are done it is burnt, off to lounge room to
test yep all works. So, not a problem here yet FCP, DVDSP,
Soundtrack, Audacity, and QT7Pro on Tigger via a PB cooking with Gas.

Reports from a local school indicate that installing QT7 stuffs
Kid Pix 4.

Check company website, could be an issue they know about and have
solved or are solving. I found this with Stuffit and Cocktail,
relevant fixes already their and Diskwarrior too.

And when you use the Apple uninstaller to go back to QT 6.5, Kid
Pix is

still stuffed!

If you have 10.3.9 only, any other version this will happen.

Do not use, although one thing I did notice with Tigger is the
longer it is running the little bugs and niggles disappear and as
for QT7 have not played with it much except in mentioned
recordings. Which are external sounds for background noise with
voice overs via PB mike. One would assume these are QT7 intense,
the MPEG2 compiled a little quicker than the Panther powered PB,
not sure but I think quality too, have to play more to check this.
So, many options with QT not sure where to go, oh MPEG 2 QT Player
for 6 works in 7 so do not purchase a new one it is same unit.

I'd suggest giving QT7 a miss for now.

Each too their own, but thus far no probs for me!

I would suggest to leave QT7 alone unless going to Tigger. HD mode in
QT7 requires some serious hardware, I think a lot of people are under
impression it will work on antique machinery. Tigger itself seems to
activate system CPU and Memory similar to Linux, but it is more
efficient than Panther.

One really cool feature is dictionary as standard, highlight word
then command + control + D and their ya go.

Off to get some sleep!

Preview still uses drawers, it's specifically Mail that's lost the
