theres an easier way

make a desktop printer

drag your hardrive/folder to it and print center will print the folder
listing of its contents

caveat: only one level deep

If you don't mind the format being pretty simple, you can use:

find / -ls

or

find / -print

(depending on what formatting you want) from the Terminal application.
To save the output to a file (for later printing from a text editor) you
can use:

find / -ls > all_files_on_disk.txt

DVD compatibility

2005-06-20 Thread Severin Crisp
My G4/400 has an internal optical CD,DVD-R drive (Hitachi DVD-ROM GD
-3000) and I also have an external CD,DVD burner (Pioneer DVD-RW
DWR-106D) which I believe is the same as an Apple Superdrive.
DVDs which I burn will not, however, read in the internal drive,
though the Tiger DVD gave no problem. From the Apple support area I
glean that this may be a firmware issue though I can find no firmware
update, nor can I find a firmware reference for the drive from
System Profiler. The nearest I get is Revision 020S.

While this is not a problem, it is annoying. Does anyone know of a fix?

Re: Scanning direction

2005-06-20 Thread gary dorn
If you have a scanner that uses a fluorescent tube, rather than LEDs
to illuminate the object, then you should aim to scan as much as
possible with the middle of the fluorescent tube. The reason for
this is that the tube's characteristics change most nearest the ends
of the tube, especially if it has been used a lot. So, with a
fluorescent scanner, put the photo in the centre of the platen with
the photo's long axis running down the platen. In that way you use
the smallest width of fluorescent tube, and the bit you use is the
middle bit.

Scanning a full-size piece of really white paper will often show up
the way in which fluorescent tube characteristics affect a scan.

Have you checked the "Layout" setting in your Print dialog (the
second one in the "Copies & Pages" popup). The "Border" setting might
have inadvertently been set to one of the "double line" options.

Or use the Version Tracker widget or bookmark the Version Tracker RSS feed
page and put it in the bookmark bar. Might as well take advantage of the new
technologies available. I don't use widgets much but I have lots of RSS
sites in Safari which automatically tells me when there are new stories.

Yes. ABSOLUTELY check the firmware version. You'll have to download
and run the Firmware 4.1.9 updater from Apple's website. It will
install if needed, otherwise it will tell you that the firmware is up
to date.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS CANNOT BE STRESSED ENOUGH. Installing Panther
on certain iMacs of this vintage without first updating the firmware
can damage the computer.

I have made myself a promise that no microsoft software will go

Also what good system repair software is there - I use to live by

DiskWarrior is still the leader here, I think.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also any software or hints for ipod mini's?

Everything you need should be on your Mac. If not, it will be on the
CD that came with your iPod. Also, run Software Update after
installing any of it.

Click on the Bookmark icon at the left of the Bookmark Bar. Click on
the Bookmark Bar collection at the top of the list of collections.
You will find that you have several folders listed, each containing
multiple bookmarks, and some of those folders will have the "Auto-
Click" checkbox activated. These folders show up in the Bookmark Bar
as the ones with the squares next to them. Simply uncheck their
checkboxes to turn the squares into triangles. You can also drag some
of those bookmarks out of the folders and put them somewhere else to
reduce their numbers in the Bookmark Bar.

The second bookmark bar row you refer to is the row of tabs,
necessary for Tabbed Browsing, The purpose of "Auto-Click" bookmark
folders is precisely that - to open a collection of bookmarks in
Tabs. I must admit, though - 50 is a bit of overkill :-)

On that machine I think the boot partition needs to be *less* than 8Gb
in size, and it needs to be the first partition on the disk. I think
this is mentioned in the Panther readme on the install CD.
