Re: ADMIN important
I read a while ago about Mathew leaving his job and saying this may affect the club as far as some of the facilities the club may have access to in the future. I've read other posts by Mathew requesting assistance keeping the web site up to date a while ago (hasn't been updated since June). Now there is the problem of finding a new ISP for WAMUG (I assume this problem will also apply to GMUG as well if they are sharing your server). The thing is Mathew is the Western Australian rep for the MUG Mentor Team (comprised of MUG leaders around Australia) and is subscribed to its mailing list Team Talk. As such perhaps Mathew could put together a list of all the problems WAMUG is having at the moment plus facilities it will need to find and post it to the Team Talk list. I know Mathew probably would prefer to look after things himself and he may be in full control of the situation but I just wanted to let him know if he needs any help we would be happy to do whatever we could to take some of the load off if possible. -- All the best Greg Sharp President/Webmaster [EMAIL PROTECTED] Australian Mac Users Group (AUSMUG) http://www.australian.macusersgroup.org

Word to TeX
Hello, Does anyone out there use LaTeX? My husband need some advice. He is a newbie with a Macintosh - has had his 15 G4 Powerbook, OS 10.4.2, for only 6 months. He is writing a technical textbook, composing it in LaTeX as he goes along. He needs to be able to import images and mathematical formulas from Word documents. He knows there is Word-to-TeX software for pcs, but is there any for the Mac? Failing that, would virtual pc be able to help, or just clutter things up? Any help much appreciated - I don't know enough about either TeX or Word to be able to do a proper search. Cheers, Pat

Cheers, Pat Morning Pat, LaTex documents I create these days I utilise a GUI front-end called LyX . I use this for most of what I determine as normal word processing stuff i.e Essays, Report, Letters and the odd books etc. http://wiki.lyx.org/pmwiki.php/LyX/Mac This does take some effort to install although latest version very simple once TeX is in place. I do not know if it will suffice for your husband, but it does import Word documents ? The latest Apple Developer eLetter mentions this product.. LateXiT http://ktd.club.fr/programmation/latexit.php warning it looks as it is French only for documentation etc..? And of course OS X being a branch of Unix it does have command line. So, CTAN great resource for TeX, LateX and most tools should work or be able to compile so as to work. One can even use LateX in this way within the terminal. word2latex http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/support/word2latex/ Cheers! `Rob...

He knows there is Word-to-TeX software for pcs, but is there any for the Mac? Your best option for images might be to try to extract them from the Word doc where possible. I don't know if Word for Mac has anything as useful as the ability to simply drag an image from a Word doc to the desktop to extract it (I don't think the win32 versions do - they're what I use when I must use Word). You might be able to copy and paste images from a Word doc into an image program, then save the image. Alternately, I usually use OpenOffice to open the Word doc, then save as HTML - a horrific hack, but one that gets the original images out, usually without recompressing them and thus losing quality. Formulae are more difficult. I'd probably want to try to get the formula as an EPS that I could reference in the LaTeX document. If you're really lucky, the formula editor can save an EPS file or some format that can be converted to an EPS. Failing that, you might be able to print to PDF and either use the PDF directly, or crop it down and save it as an EPS in Acrobat Professional. I don't have access to Word right now, and I have no access to Word for Mac at any time, so I can't do any more. Hopefully those are a few ideas that might at least prove worth investigating. -- Craig Ringer
Re: Safari quits again
The old chestnuts should also be tried if you haven't already 1. Repair permissions 2. Boot from OS X CD and, using Disk Utility, repair the disk 3. Zap PRAM 4. Use Disk Warrior You might also clear out your favicons. iTunes Music Store Gift card
Hello. I am not an Australian user, but a French one. I have visit the new Australian iTunes music store and like in some other country, it's possible to have a free song every weeks. because I don't live in Australia, it's impossible for me to subscribe to this store and get this song. The only solution that I have fond to download for an iTms from an other country, is to open an account with a Gift certificates. and when the credit is over, I still have the possibility to download the free song every week like I do for the US or Japan store. So, I'm writing to this list to find someone who can send me this type of Gift certificate. For sure, I will pay for everything (Maybe with Pay-Pall). Also, if someone from Australia want to have a French account, I can also send a Gift certificate from my country. Thanks. Gwen.

Test Safari at that stage. If it works OK, re-apply the 10.3.9 updater (assuming you have the combo version), or apply whatever chain of updates you have. In fact, it might not be a bad to apply a few incremental updates after your base version if you have them, testing Safari after each one, and see if it fails at any point. You could also try dinking around with Pacifist, but if the problem lies very deep, eg, some corruption with the webkit framework or similar, you'll just waste more time. I think Peter is correct... Safari problems
Hi all, I'm having problems trying to access the Westpac home page at http://www.westpac.com.au I've accessed it before without any problems using my 15 PowerBook, but it suddenly doesn't want to complete the download anymore. The iMac that I have still accesses it without any problems. Anyone got any ideas? Cheers. Now I must buy them from the online Apple Education Store, unless it is a computer. Ie, recently I couldn't buy my Mighty Mouse from my AppleCentre at Apple Ed price but had to buy it online from Apple Ed. Hi Ronni Firefox seems to work, and gets a good review in latest Aust MacWorld. Perhaps Cloe could become a FireFoxFan? Some browsers can be set to emulate other browsers, such as IE, Netscape etc. Maybe try this. Kind regards to Cloe from Frizzbee and Beanie ( If we ever miss registering them up here in sunny Gero, we get a letter reminding us to register our outstanding dogs. I would have thought the smaller number of AppleCentres v Coles/Myers et al outlets would not make a significant impact on overall sales, and would remain loyal to Apple resellers and their customers. A business decision in the sense that to secure the Coles/Myer deal, Apple had to provide exclusive distribution of the cards to Coles/Myer for the first 6 months (imho). After that they can supply pretty much anyone. Its not an uncommon practice, as Apple aren't Robinson Crusoe in tying up a sole distribution deal. A perfect example is the band Presidents of the United States of America. The tickets for their only gig in Perth this week could only be won through 96FM. Too bad if you couldn't get through to win, but provided excellent exposure for 96FM. Plus, 3% of the population use Macs. The rest use PCs. Chances are that someone is more likely to buy a iTMS card waiting a checkout in Coles than strolling into a AppleStore. The more the average Joe PC user sees that Apple symbol where ever he goes, the better chance we have of that person walking into the store with an AppleSymbol at the front to investigate further. Also, the first AppleCentre south of the Swan River is Albany :-) Interestingly Coles Geraldton was advertising them today. We have no AppleCentre up here... oops yes we have... Joondalup is in South Geraldton :-) I still need my passport stamped when I get the end of the freeway on Saturdays ;-) (Just joshing all you northies!) Welcome to the US model of Apple retailing :-) Its the Dell model too. You can make much more money avoiding the middle man and selling direct. Unfortunately you lose all that face to face contact and goodwill that is made through stores like AppleCentres. Granted, there has been some bad eggs out there over the years, but at least the ones that are left have a friendly face when you walk in! Interesting times ahead for Apple Australia... Seeya Rod!

Hi Reg, As I emailed Peter Meyer who informed me that Firefox worked. I would prefer to use Firefox in preference to Netscape. I had only recently deleted all other Web Browsers except Safari as Safari seemed to be handling everything fine On 27/10/2005, at 6:24 PM, Reg Whitely wrote: Firefox seems to work, and gets a good review in latest Aust MacWorld. Export Movie to iTunes/iPod
Just for your interest: I thought I needed Quicktime Pro to export an iMovie to iPod. But then I read this: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=302559 I exported a 4min iMovie (1.3 GB) to iPod using the Share command in iMovie. It took 20 mins, the result was fairly watchable and the resulting file size was only 22mb!!!
