IE off menu for OSX
I see reports that Microsoft are about to discontinue support of Internet Explorer for OSX on 31 December and will remove the download from its site on that date. Cheers, Paul. -- Dr Paul R. Weaver http://www.livejournal.com/users/fremantlebiz/calendar
converting DVDs to CDs
I have iLife on DVD which I want to load onto an older iMac. How much trouble is it to break it up to put it on CDs? Or is this not possible? TIA Kev
Re: Dell 20 24 LCD Screens Going Cheap
Yeah, I also picked up one at the 'special price' about 2 months ago. At $1400 or so they're excellent value. I just put together an iDVD of my Tassie holiday yesterday ... felt great to have all the extra space. Oh, and World of Warcraft still looks awesome [grins]. T. The web site is a bit misleading - under the 24 it says from $899, but that actually applies to the 20. The sales guy on the phone ended up giving me a price for a 24 of $1359. This is at least the third time that I know of that Dell has had this monitor on special at around the $1400 mark, so I wouldn't worry if anyone misses getting one this time. I got a 24 Dell at work the second time I discovered they were at that price. Dell's pretty sneaky with their marketing - they make you rush so as not to miss out on their rare specials when in fact they perhaps aren't that rare after all. :-)
Re: converting DVDs to CDs
Hi Kevin It's possible and I've done it. You need enough free space on the iMac to copy the entire DVD though, plus space to install it. This may require you backing up docs and pics to the other computer first if you need to free up space. There may be other ways but this is what I did. I assume your iMac has no dvd drive. Using Target Firewire mode, copy the entire dvd onto the iMac from the computer which has the dv drive. Then open this image and install in the usual way. You can't install it directly to the iMac using firewire as the installer will only work if its running in the OS you are installing to! Frankly, I have come to the conclusion that MacOS X's own routines are as good as anything on the 3rd party market. For example, I recently had the experience of having to repair a client's hard drive (which the computer could no longer see). MY first choice was Disk Warrior. DW saw the drive and claimed to have repaired it, but hadn't really. In the end, the only thing which worked was the disk repair function in Disk Utility. To my knowledge, the drive is still working perfectly. I must say regarding Disk Warrior and Mac OS X, I have seen many more instances of failure (ie, effecting no improvement) than success. While it has never created more damage than was there to start with, it often fails to fix problems. Disk Utility will be my first line of defence from now on. -- Peter HinchliffeApwin Computer Services FileMaker Pro Solutions Developer Perth, Western Australia Phone (618) 9332 6482Fax (618) 9332 0913 Mac because I prefer it -- Windows because I have to.

Hi Philip, Here are the most common Mac OS X maintenance steps and how to perform them: I do them once a month, or after a power failure, after a Installation of a new application or a system Upgrade. 1.Repairing Privileges Open the Disk Utility located in your Applications Utilities folder and click on the First Aid tab. Then, select the Mac OS X partition — not the whole hard drive — and click on Repair Permissions. You do not need to Verify first. By doing this, you will ensure that installers will be able to install the right files in the right places and that they won't be denied access when they shouldn't. The reverse is also true: this makes sure that the parts of your installation that should be locked are locked indeed, and prevents some applications from writing files where they shouldn't. 2. Run MacJanitor or Cocktail or your Onyx (I like MacJanitor, but have used all these apps, make sure you have the latest versions) 3. Software Update Check Software Update for any updates. Cheers, Ronni

Re: Dell 20 24 LCD Screens Going Cheap
Thanks for the tip Phil, have just ordered the 24 monitor for $1349. Just in case anyone else is thinking of ordering one there was just one small problem: there were 232 orders in front of mine for the 24 and they are all waiting to be built, so it will be between the Jan 3 and Jan 7 before they can deliver it. Regards, Mike Hiya, Having read very positive reviews about Dell screens lately I figured I'd check their current pricing today. One good review is at http://www.barefeats.com/lcd.html (written by a Mac guy, comparing it to the Apple 23). Turns out that this week Dell are selling 20 LCDs for $899 and 24 LCDs for $1399 (only $700 cheaper than Apple's 23). The web site is a bit misleading - under the 24 it says from $899, but that actually applies to the 20. The sales guy on the phone ended up giving me a price for a 24 of $1359. The Dell screens also have a three year warranty (compared to Apple's one year). Regards, Phil (probably about to raid his bank account)

Suggestions please!Tia Ciao P. The most important tool is making sure that the scripts Apple require for OS X to be run at their intervals. Which is handled by the machine in the wee hours of the morning, just leave machine running overnight. If this is not possible one can run from the terminal, I utilise Cocktail to run scripts and other maintenance issues and it works a treat. Disk Utility will take care of most other issues related to Hard- Drives and have a look around internet to acquire some knowledge about FSCK (Disk Utility utilises) for other useful titbits if confident to probe. Do not run defragmentation tools as Journalling solves all of that, Automator and a Firewire drive can solve the backup issues. Leave caches and re-building start-up scripts alone unless really necessary for tracing problems. http://www.thexlab.com Cheers! `Rob...
Disc Utilities Thank's all.
Thanks to all who replied. Cosensus seems to be Disc Warrior by a modest head, Most suggest sticking to Apple Disc utilities Hardware maintainance menu on Original install DVD. As I do the suggestion was to verify Permissions regularly spasmodic Onyx or Mac Janitor.ta again Cheers to all p.
Mac Mini + Dell 20 or 24

Mixed marriages Mac + PC
Hi, Are there any experts in the integration of Macs (OS 10.4.n) into a Windows 2003 Server network with DFS (distributed file services?) without the need for additional software such as DAVE. Since moving from OS9 many years ago, I have enjoyed being able to use my work network with the built in tools of OSX, and not having to rely on the vagaries of DAVE which used to be very temperamental and lock up my Mac quite frequently. Things worked well until two weeks ago when IT upgraded the Windows server. Now: 1) Mail will not pick up my Outlook account, however Entourage will! Would prefer to only use one mail client if possible especially as I have a lot of old emails archived in Outlook and is more easily searched with Spotlight. 2) My network share is visible but empty from OSX, however will work normally (albeit slowly) with DAVE added. Any OSXperts out there who know how to fix this and could give me some pointers, or if you make a living out of resolving such problems, contact me off list with pricing details for your services. From: Metal Artwork Creations [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Mac Mini + Dell 20 or 24 1.Will the above combination work? Yep. I have a Mac Mini plugged into my Dell 24 at times as well as my PowerBook G4. It is capable of driving the Dell at the full 1920x1200 resolution and works fine using VGA - and I'm pretty sure I tried it once using DVI as well. (I'll check tomorrow if you wish) 2.
