Pop up error message
Over the last 5 days or so, regardless of which browser I use, I have been getting a pop up menu saying I have a computer error and can have a free scan to correct the error. In trying to close the window it takes over my browser window and says to click OK to start the free download. There is a cancel option but after cancelling the offer reappears. I force quit out of the browser to clear the deck. Has anyone else experienced this irritation? What action to stop it? Re: DVD won't eject
Hi everyone. I have just installed Tiger 10.4.3 on my G5 (1.6MHz/ 768DDR), and the 10.4.3 DVD will not eject. Have tried rebooting and holding down eject key, nothing. The eject menu title is greyed out. Installation was fine, no problems. In Startup disk prefs the DVD does not appear, only HDD and Network, although the DVD is in there. Any thoughts on this? Cheers Jon

List Manager in Excel
Hi, I have been using excel to create lists of vital records for genealogical research. During a copy and past operation I was asked by excel if I would like to use the List Manager for the list, to which I said yes. Normally this then covers the Header/Titles and all of the fields below them, which is what I wanted to happen. This time however of the 8 columns it chose, seemingly at random, columns 2-5 and put its border around them. I can't drag the border, either way, to cover the other columns. So I spent hours trying to find out from excel help how to resize or remove the list manage border, it just doesn't seem to address the topic. Does any one know how to expand the list manager border to include other columns and how to remove it totally? Thanks Matt Falvey

From: Peter N Lewis [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, 12 January 2006 11:30 AM To: MacGeeks List Subject: Software Update, finding the package? Perhaps someone has an idea for this. My dad has a shiny new iMac (PPC of course), but unfortunately he ignored my advise and went with Telstra as a ADSL provider, and so he has a measly 200MG/month limit. Software Updates probably exceed that each month all by themselves! I find it incomprehensible that providers who provide such low-cap services don't offer local unmetered mirrors for updates to major operating systems, games, and popular software packages. Even hen they do, they seem to go to no effort to ensure that vendors are aware of this and include them in the automatic mirror selection. Why not just host an Akamai node? Oh, yeah ... they wouldn't be able to rip off customers who don't understand that 200MB is barely anything in this world of 100MB OS updates and multi-megabyte web pages. -- Craig Ringer
Re: Pop up error message
I experienced a similar thing yesterday not long after installing Mac OS X 10.4.4 update and Safari Version 2.0.3 (417.8). In my case it was when viewing a page of search results from Google and then when I linked on to the next page of results up came a similar message like you mentioned. It was not a pop up window but a Google page with the message that it had detected a virus and listied links to virus checkers and spyware programs. I did not investigate the web page at the time but it appeared to be a genuine Google page with their logo on it. I have a feeling it may have something to do with the shareware program Pithlmet which informed me after the loading of the new version of Safari that the Pithelmet has not loaded as it is incompatible with this version of Safari. I have since removed Pithelmet and all associated files that were installed with the program. Will be interesting to see if the message appears again. Saving an iMovie to a DVD
In the past I have produced iMovies on DVD disks that play in a normal DVD player (and in a computer too) but I have lost the thread of how I did it and reference to my existing DVDs that work does not bring it back. I know the first step is to export the iMovie as a Full Quality QuickTime movie (.mov). That is opened in Quicktime and exported to a saved file which I then just copied to DVD with Toast, or that is my memory. The missing link is the format I used for export from QT (was 6Pro, I now have 7Pro). Should it just be a PAL DV stream? I can not use iDVD on my G4/400. Help to my failing neurones please! I am loath to just experiment with this one in the hope of eventually getting it right. It is about 40mins long and each process will take several hours! Flip4Mac: Ridiculous Licensing? [was: Re: Windows Media Player R.I.P.]
Hi, Has anyone noticed the different licensing conditions of Flip4Mac compared to Windows Media Player? For all those who have installed Flip4Mac, do any of you adhere to its licensing conditions? It stipulates, among other things, that Back-Up Copy. You are permitted to make one (1) back-up or archival copy of the Software (excluding documentation) in machine readable (object code) form to support Your authorized use under this Agreement. Such copy shall be labeled Copy for Back-Up Use Only and Not for Resale. Documentation may not be copied. All copies are the property of Telestream. Does Telestream inform you of where the documentation files are installed (so that you can exclude them from your backups), and how do you all label your backup copies as Copy for Back-up Use Only and Not for Resale? Invisible ink? Even Microsoft's Media Player licence allows You may install and use a reasonable number of copies of the software on computers at your premises.. The Flip4Mac website knowledgebase doesn't seem to contain any articles about the intractability of the license. It also states: Telestream shall have the right, upon reasonable prior notice to You and during Your normal business hours, to audit Your use of the Licensed Materials and to inspect Your records related to any copies of the Software, or portions thereof, made by You. I assume this is not done via any back door mechanism within the software itself?

Then add the saved iMovie project file into the Content Area of Toast DVD-Video. You do not need to do any special export formatting in iMovie prior to adding the project to Toast. If you want to set your own compression: File Share Quicktime Expert settings then click Share Movie to DV Stream click Options DV Format: DV Video Format: PAL Scan Mode: Interlaced Aspect Ratio 4:3 Audio Format: Rate 48.000 kHz Cheers, Ronni
