I have just upgraded to an NEC NDH 80 that has an 80GB hard drive and
writes both + and -DVD and DVD RW . Has worked a charm on storing a
couple of world cup matches and I'm currently recoding from video
some old Eagles games that were on VHS.

about $460 from Harvey Norman down from $680

Itunes/Iphoto/non playing

2006-06-17 Thread Bill Cole

Gday,

has anyone on the list heard how apple are progressing with
resolving the conflict of Iphoto's crashing when selecting music
( a follow up from Rods last )
I thought that with the way Apple are pushing the music side of the
business they would be keen to resolve this Asap.

I'd highly recommend checking that the disks it writes can be
imported into iMovie. They're likely to be MPEG program streams which
are not in a format that iMovie can necessarily read, even if your
drive can read the disks.

Have fun,

Download managers

2006-06-17 Thread Aurora
HI,

I have been using Deep Vacuum as a download manager but in the last month I
have been having trouble with some sites. I have upgraded to the latest with
no improvement but can still download using Firefox.

Can anyone recommend an alternative download manager?

Re: DVD HDD recorders

Severin

I entered the market when these dropped below $1,000 (watched them
for a year starting at $2,500!).

Picked up a Pioneer DVR-520H-s with 80GB drive (DVR-720H-s same and
has 160GB).

Link to Pioneer's archive http://www.pioneer.com.au/
home_entertainment/archive.html (The DVR-510H-s on this page pre-
dates the 520/720 and also has DV OUT).

Reason for picking the 520/720 (other than price) was the DV OUT
facility, it can be connected to the Mac and imports to iMovie via
firewire. It acts as if it is a video camera (not an external hard
disk).

Important - it was the only model range readily available with DV OUT
making importing into iMovie easy.

Unfortunately it has been replaced by a model with DV IN and no DV
OUT (DVR-530H / DVR-630H http://www.pioneer.com.au/
home_entertainment/dvdplayersandrecorders/index.html). I've kept an
eye on the market and have not yet seen another model / range with DV
OUT. Could not find 510/520/720 models on eBay.

DVD HDD units typically record in MPEG2 format and create video
format disks (either video or VR formats) for use in DVD players, not
data format disks for importing into iMovie.

Therefore you'll need to:
- find another model with DV OUT
or
- rip the DVD's to your disk and convert to a format that iMovie can
handle (DV, DV Widescreen, HDV1080i, HDV720p, MPEG-4, iSight)

On the Superdrive formats, check System Profiler.app, and firmware
updates.

Hope this helps.

Re: multi button gaming mice for Mac ???

2006-06-17 Thread Dark1

Hi Mark

I find the Logitech MX310 great. You can easily program the buttons
in the WoW interface just like you can they keys. I've got side left
-shadowbolt, side right-shadowburn, mouse wheel-conflagerate and
middle button-circumstantial depending where I am.
It's not really enough buttons but I find the rest can be used with
the mouse or keyboard and those extra important ones can be mapped
near asdw.

Hope this Helps
Ruben A. Franke

Having sunk in to a deep state of WOW addiction I need to upgrade
my mouse as a standard MS mouse + Nostromo gaming pad isn't L33t
enough .

Anyone like to suggest a 5+ button programmable mouse that's
compatibles with Macs? (other than Microsoft)

looked at the Logitech site and they only say they (or more to the
point their button mapping software I guess) as being Windows
compatible.

Hi Severin,

I used transfer from VCR to my computer also (except I used an analogue
to digital device instead of a camera) and in the end
I settled for an EyeTV that way you are more sure of getting a format
that you can deal with on your computer than maybe you would using a
DVD HDD recorder.

Cheers
