Free: x3 iMacs
I've got three CRT iMacs - free to anyone who will pick them up. They have 4 or 6Gig hard disks, range from 266mhz to 350mhz, one had 576megs of ram (I think). E-mail off list if you're interested. [OT] Few hours work for a PC-friendly person
Hi WAMUG folks. An off-topic request... A Mac friend of mine here in Perth uses Windows PCs at work, and is wondering if someone would like to get paid for a few hours work, with some simple document setting up tasks... 1. Helping to sort clients names alphabetically 2. Some simple Word mail merge help 3. Wanting to share client bookings between 2x PCs. The tasks just need someone who can help out in person, with someone who doesn't use computers all day like many of us do! Feel free to give Mikki a call on ph: 9478 3869 (business hours) or on her mobile: 0437 419 636. Just let her know that you're responding to Derek's message, and let her know how much you charge for a few hours helping out. Thanks folks... End of off-topic message. Re: Replacement DVD RW? suggestions
thanks for the info I'll try hunt down one of these types of drives sometime this week. Hi Mark, Have installed the Lite-On LH18-A1. LH-20-A1 and the Pioneer DVR-112 and all seem to work fine. The Lite-On drives require 10.4.2 or later to be recognised by Apple's Built in Disc Burning software (and iTunes, iMovie etc) but if you use the free utility PatchBurn 4, all of the drives will work with the OS in 10.3 as well. If you use Toast then you have no problems as they are all recognised by Toast straight away. The only issue I have come across with these drives so far is that they are not supported by Retrospect as backup devices (They won't configure...however many times you try!) - so if you are using Retrospect to backup or archive to DVD then you might want to hunt around for a Pioneer DVR-111 (if you can find one!). Otherwise both drives seem to be fine. Hope that helps a bit, Regards, Dustin. iPhoto crashing
Hi all, For some reason my iPhoto app is crashing, within about 10 seconds of opening EVERY time. I've never had significant problems with apple programs in OS X, so I'm unsure what to do. I've tried the following on a MacBook Pro 2.16Ghz, 1GB, heaps of spare space, OS 10.4.9, using iPhoto 6.0.6 and 6.0.1 I have 1. Repaired permissions and ran maintenance scripts from terminal 2. Repaired HD using disk utility from start up disk(fixed a few things) 3. Reinstalled iPhoto 6.0.1 from OS X 10.4 DVD None of these have worked, and I am now realising how important iPhoto had become! What caused it? - No idea, just started happening - I've installed a few shareware apps recently, but none are running at same time. If anyone can offer any advice with what to try next, I would really appreciate it. Mac backups to PCs?
I'm about to build an XP based full tower with about 8 removable drives in it to act as the main storage unit for all the data around the house / that I bring home (because the hardware is cheap and space a plenty!) Re: Mac backups to PCs?
we use retrospect server on a Windows box to back up our macs to external hard drives, we've never had any problems recovering data back to macs. Storring files in their native mac format can be an issue - if you wish to use any mac file naming conventions that break Windows file name rules you need to ( I belive) have apple file sharing service running on the server and have a separate disk for mac data I'm about to build an XP based full tower with about 8 removable drives in it to act as the main storage unit for all the data around the house / that I bring home (because the hardware is cheap and space a plenty!) Hi Antony, Given that the Mac is a BSD/unix derivitive I would like to think that you are much better off installing Linux on this fileserver. Not only will you have greater stability and security, but you have a much greater number of options as far as mounting the remote filesystem such as NFS, samba or even appletalk. I understand that Linux is a little daunting for the first time user, however with newer distributions out there they are becoming easier and eaier to use (I would recommend using one with a GUI interface such as Ubuntu). iTunes and podcasts
iTunes refuses to put downloaded MP3 podcasts into the Podcasts library, they remain fixed in the Music library. This is iTunes 7.1.1 and I am sure this was not the case with earlier versions. Re: iTunes and podcasts
Hi Sev, It seems to me that if you download the mp3 file - ie the download audio link (for Radio National) then iTunes handles it like a music file (with a genre of podcast) - however if you subscribe to the podcast then iTunes puts them in the Podcasts library. I'm also finding this frustrating - I have some By Design podcasts which I downloaded using my old iMac (OSX 10.2 iTunes3) but have since subscribed to the By Design podcast using my new iMac (OSX 10.4.9 iTunes 7.1.1) - the new podcasts are in the Podcasts library but the old podcasts, which I have added to my library (and which are no longer available as a podcast download) are in the Music library. I want all the By Design podcasts in the same spot on the browser - I don't even care that much if it is under podcasts or music (though podcasts WOULD be more logical) - however after trying several approaches eg moving the actual files (using finder) both into and out of the podcasts folder, adding podcast files using the add to library command for files physically located in both in and out of the podcasts folder, still iTunes stubbornly displays them as either podcasts or music in the browser. So... If anyone knows a workaround, I also would be very happy! Cheers Neil -- Neil R. Re: iTunes and podcasts
Hi Neil and Severin, iTunes places only podcasts you've subscribed to into Podcasts playlist as Neil has said. Typecast might do what you want Neil. Typecast lets you copy regular audio files from your Mac or the internet into the iTunes Podcast playlist. Using a simple drag-and-drop interface, you specify the source tracks (episodes), and give your pseudo-podcast a name and description. When you click Send to iTunes, your customized Podcast shows up instantaneously. If you've ever wished you could get iTunes to treat a normal mp3 file just like all the other Podcasts in your subscription list, Typecast might be just what you're looking for. http://www.red-sweater.com/typecast/index.html Cheers, Ronni On 22/05/2007, at 10:13 AM, Neil Houghton wrote: Hi Sev, It seems to me that if you download the mp3 file - ie the download audio link (for Radio National) then iTunes handles it like a music file (with a genre of podcast) - however if you subscribe to the podcast then iTunes puts them in the Podcasts library.
