apologies in advance.

The (dual processor) Amiga was arguably ahead of Apple in the mid-80s.

released in 1985, its color screen (4096 colors in HAM mode!), four-
channel sampled stereo sound, preemptive multitasking GUI, and custom
chips to accelerate both sound and graphics made the year-old
Macintosh seem antiquated and the PC positively Paleolithic. Steve
Jobs was reported to be extremely worried about the Amiga, but
fortunately for him and Apple, Commodore had absolutely no idea what
they were doing."

Re: Apples to Apples

2007-07-17 Thread Rod Lavington
In staying off topic... :-)

The Amiga was streets ahead until the early 90s. The Video Toaster add on
board revolutionised Desktop and Broadcast video long before Apple. A
"hackable" OS (in the true sense of the word) which was very elegant and
efficient. Too bad Commodore was run by monkeys :-(

But, everyone else caught up and left the Amiga behind. Consoles did more
damage to the Amiga market than PCs or Macs.

the intel machines get a boost ( by about 28%), according some news
from Munich Germany
the new series of intel core 2 will be out in about 2 weeks and is
suitable for laptops
its name is "Core 2 Extreme X7800" is a quad core system, consumes 44
watts power, has power saving features, uses a 800 mhz bus to connect
to the motherboard..there is allready a 3ghz version in the
pipeline.

another thing is the webbrowser Firefox is now market leader in some
parts of Europe.

Apple stopped the media in reporting about the osx.5 / leopard,
screenshots & existing reports have to be removed...

the software is for developers only
apple wants that anyone interested is visiting the apple webpage

Hi Ken.

These steps should do the trick:

You can easily import contacts from Microsoft Entourage using vCard
format.

To import contacts from Entourage on the G4:
  1. Create a new folder in the Finder on your desktop named
"Contacts".

  2. Open the address book in Entourage.
  3. Select the contacts you want to export. If you want to
export all of them, choose Select All from the Edit menu.
  4. Drag the selected contacts into the Contacts folder that
you created. This creates vCard files for each of the contacts you
selected.

  5. Quit Entourage.
Copy the folder you created to the Powerbook
  6. Open the Address Book application.
  7. Choose View Card and Columns from the View menu.
  8. Drag the Contacts folder from the desktop to the Groups
column of the Address Book window.

The contact information should now be available in Address Book (and
therefore also in Mail).

Steve.

Re: Photo Restoration

2007-07-17 Thread Jo Brookes
Is the odd pattern on the actual photo or on the scan, (could be the
moire effect) not sure if I spelt that right.
If so you could rescan it in another resolution, doesnt usually
happen with scans from original photos tho, usually its scans of
printed stuff that it shows up on. I havnt seen it for years.

Digital/Analogue same quality

2007-07-17 Thread Jo Brookes

I called JB Hi Fi yesterday about a DVD/VCR recorder.

I was talking to the guy about recording from digital camera to DVD
and he said

"yes, but it would only be analogue quality"

No, I have a digital camera
That only refers to controls on the camera, it has tapes, so its
analogue

No, they are digital tapes
huh?

Why do I pay more for digital tapes if they are actually analogue
Only hard disks can record digital

What about Dat tapes for backups?
What tapes?, never heard of them
Computers cant backup to tapes... only to other computers

Dat tapes...
No such thing, not for backups

I've used them for backups myself
Well were not talking about that is there anything else you want
to know about?

No thats it thanks

It's obvious that you do know what your talking about, but just in
case his spiel worried you, you're right and he's wrong. Digital
video is recorded as 0s and 1s. Digitally. With digits. Lucky these
guys don't get paid to do any really important work. ;)

logitech g15 gaming keyboard

2007-07-17 Thread Adam Hewitt
Hi All,

I managed to spill a few drops of coke on my g15 gaming keyboard last
Friday, which I wiped off immediately. I continued to use it for the rest of
the day without problems and then discovered on Saturday that 85% of the
keys don't work any more.

I pulled the keyboard apart and found that the coke had managed to get in
between the plastic membrane with the circuitry on it that registers the key
presses. I cleaned it all out and made sure it was all gone and dry, however
the circuitry has seemingly oxidized in some places and has gone a brownish
color. I put it all back together and tested it again and it made no
difference.

I phoned Logitech this morning to find out how I could go about getting the
replacement membrane (SOE-KBT432) and I was told that they do not sell
individual components and the best I could do was to leave the keyboard out
in the sun to dry or buy a new one.

I am very disappointed that I cannot purchase what would be a $10 part to
fix my $120 keyboard. Does anyone:

1. know where/if I can get a replacement for this, even a 3rd party one.
2. know anyone that has a broken g15 that I could pilfer the membrane from
3. know how I could go about getting this membrane fixed at a reasonable
price.

Kind regards,

Adam.

The question here is whether oxidisation has actually taken place or
whether
there is only residue from the coke acting as a conductor between the
components and track .

You could try lightly brushing some DISTILLED water ( or equivalent )
across the areas to see if you can dilute it and wash it away !

After that leave it in a warm location to dry out !
Bright sun could cause more damage to some parts .

And if that does not work , soak the faulty part in DDISTILLED water
for an hour or 2,
lightly brush at it afterwards and then put in a warm NOT sunny place
to dry .

Might take 2 or 3 days to dry properly

The odd website that I found with stories of this problem generally
suggest that

if you get it working it will likely fail some time later.

Good luck
