LEOPARD AND ENTOURAGE

2007-11-05 Thread tom samson
so far so good with Leopard but our school runs with entourage from
the mail server but for some reason Entourage does not want to work
on my macbook now. Word and excel are okay.
The machine also enjoys spitting out cds - they ran previously and
they still do elsewhere

Re: ADSL connect speed

2007-11-05 Thread Antony N. Lord

I have had similar issues on many of our ADSL lines caused by 2 main culprits :

* ADSL line filters giving up the ghost
* Phone line problems

In 90% of cases replacing the filters on the other devices works. If
its ADSL2+ I can make one wise recommendation - get a central line
filter.

http://www.c10.com.au/web/Products/ADSL%20Filters/C10100E.html

These are about $30 from places like MM Electrical. Very easy to
install if you're handy with a punchdown tool / telephone cabling
(insert standard license disclaimer here). If you get a phone guy to
install they're about $200 all up (thieves!) Last time I checked they
were Australia's only certified ADSL2+ central filter. Speed tests
have shown remarkable differences between shitty X brand filters and
this baby. C10 also makes regular (non-central) filters too.

I've also seen the phone line itself as the culprit - worn / nicked
cables, water in the insulation, rats, old wall sockets, even other
phone handsets causing grief. Disconnect all devices / filters other
than the ADSL modem and see of the problem persists (a pain but the
litmus test).

The lazy bastards at iinet should have asked you to disconnect all
the devices in your house except the ADSL modem anyway and run a full
line test. This frequently rules out bad lines / cables / connectors.
Call and insist they do a full line test...

Hope this helps!

Cheers, Antony

Re: ADSL connect speed

2007-11-05 Thread Rod Kevill
Kevin,

Can you tune your bedside radio to ABC 720 without interference/static
coming through?

We had a similar problem - slow speeds, then modem dropping out altogether,
over a period of a week or so, and although we didn't connect the two, our
bedside radio had lots of static on ABC 720...

I suspected one of our attachments to the phone line was injecting some
interference, so checked all wireless phones, etc and found I had left a
filter on one of the extensions after I had installed a filter/splitter in
the roof sometime last year.

I removed the extra filter which didn't seem to make much difference, but
then I re-booted a long-running iMac close to the modem.

Anyway, the radio suddenly became crystal clear and we've had no further
problems with connection speed/modem dropouts. YMMV!

ADSL connect speed

2007-11-05 Thread KEVIN Lock

I am having problem with my BB connection through iinet.

My speed varies from the usual 426kbps down as low as 49kbps.
After a complete restart of the modem and the iMac I am back to
426kbps.

The modem is a D-Link DSL 300. iMac intel on OS 10.4.10

iinet have been no help. Do I need a new modem? Although this one
is probably 5 years old I am thinking that solid state devices either
work or don't work.

I guess our phone line could be at fault?

any ideas for me?

It's my impression that SU does its thing based on the last time it
ran: so if you have it set to check on a daily basis, and you run it
at, say, 9:00 am, it will run again at 9:00 am the next day. If you
run it again that day at 4:00 pm, it will run at 4:00 pm the
following day. The same applies if you have it set to check weekly:
if you run it at 9:00 on Friday, it will run a 9:00 am the following
Friday.

I have an Airport network to a G4 and macPro ( both with DVD)

A couple of suggestions:

1, insert the DVD into one of the computers with a DVD player, then
log into that computer from your iBook. You should be able to see the
DVD as a share. If so, mount it to your iBook and run the installer

 2. If the DVD doesn't show up as a share, copy the software from
the DVD to the HD of one of your DVD computers. Again, log into that
computer and run the installer from the remote computer.

Bootcamp / Parallels

2007-11-05 Thread X.Ray_Wa

Has any one else had this problem

I installed 10.5 and works like a dream
had no problems with anything with the new version of OSX

I installed Windows XP using Boot-camp and register Windows via the
internet .All well
I installed Parallels and run the the boot-camp version of Windows
using Parallels
Warning Warning You copy has be installed on more than one computer..
You need to re register..
Ar Had to ring Microsoft, give them a zillion numbers, he gave me
back a bunch of numbers to re register windows. What a pain that was...

So I guess Windows detected that the same windows serial number was on
two different computers "Bootcamp partition"
and "Parallels using bootcamp partition".

Re: Next WAMUG meeting

2007-11-05 Thread J Philippe Chaperon
Dear WAMUG members, friends and Glenn,

Many thanks for the suggestion Glenn. Yes! You are definitely correct in
that it can be quite daunting to find the meeting if someone is a new commer
to Curtin's environment and without an appropriate map.

The location map can be found on Curtin's site at:

http://www.geology.curtin.edu.au/local/locationhome.htm

The venue is:

Curtin University
Bentley Campus

 Applied Geology
 Building 312
Room 2.22 (note: I'm not sure of the room no. but as you enter through the
double glass doors, it is the first one on your left. This is a fairly large
lecture room.)

Hope this will be helpful, and with my sincere apologies and hope to see you
tomorrow.

Regards,

Philippe Chaperon

2007-11-05 Thread Susan Hastings
Hi Mike, you would need to check on the minimum space requirements for
Windows XP, but it should be possible if you have 30g free at present.
You won't have much room for an expanding iphoto library on the
Macbook afterwards.

The good news is that you can use the same installation of Windows
for both Parallels and Bootcamp, at least this was possible with
Bootcamp Beta. The instructions with Parallels will fill you in on
this. I think you use Bootcamp to make your partition, install Windows
on it, then from Parallels choose the Bootcamp partition as the
Windows installation to start up from.

cheers, Susan.
