2008-01-24 Thread Lindsay Adams

Hi All
Am after ADC monitor for my mirror door G4. Buying new monitor plus
adaptor just not cost effective.

Size not an issue as machine is for account/billing processing.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Best Mac Source/Support

2008-01-24 Thread Martin Hill
If she's going to Curtin, another option is the Curtin Computer Shop
on the second floor of the Curtin University Bookshop which provides
an AUC (Apple University Consortium) discount on top of the
educational discount (I've generally found them to be a little bit
cheaper than when ordering at education prices from the Apple Online
Store) and it's nice having them there on campus for staff and student
purchases.

They have a small stock of Apple & 3rd party accessories and
consumables on display. Talk to Peder and Maria who are always
helpful though they don't have an on-site service dept or dedicated
support staff. They send all of their warranty and repair work to
Team Digital in Lord Street. Stuart, the Service manager there is
excellent for hardware repairs and warranty work.

WAMUG's Daniel Kerr http://www.macwizardry.com.au/ provides 1-on-1
support and supplies peripherals etc (and does new Mac sales as well)
is located not tooo far away from Curtin and gives fantastic
personalised service and support as well.

I always drive over there, despite being much closer to another

Helpful store, and a good service centre.

We're looking MacBook Pro. She can buy education price, so I'm
looking for an outlet with helpful, timely and accessible support
for when things go wrong or when upgrades/accessories are needed
that can offer education pricing.

Suggestions/experiences greatly appreciated.

Re: Malware??

2008-01-24 Thread pweaver
To purge history files in Safari simply go to the pull down menu name
History and click 'Clear history' at the bottom.

To purge cookies go to the pull down menu named 'Safari' and click
'Preferences...' Click the sub heading named 'Security'. Click the
box marked 'Show cookies.' Click the box marked 'Remove all.' You
will see there are three options for cookies. I leave mine at
'Accept all.'

While you are in 'Preferences' click open all the other sub-headings
and consider their options. Especially take a look at 'Autofill.'
View the contents of the three sections there by clicking 'Edit' and
consider deleting anything you are uncomfortable about.

There are two other useful functions you could consider in the
'safari' pull down menu: 'Block pop-up windows' and 'Empty cache.'

If you want to go the whole hog then also in the Safari pul down
menu is 'Reset Safari...' This opens a window which gives you the
option to clean out all the cupboards at once and start again.

Cheers, Paul.

Canon scanner going

2008-01-24 Thread Vladimir James
CanoScan 5000F flatbed A4 scanner; cost $399 Aug '03; in good nick;
comes with software on CD ROM; USB connection; works with Tiger. I'm
committed to Leopard, so Canon's sluggishness in offering drivers for
Leopard, and my need for work space, is why I'm unloading it.

Yours for $20 gratuity (if you're a starving student, it's yours for
free). Email me.

Hi Neil,

ID Theft Vulnerability Haunts Firefox.

"A little more than two weeks into 2008, cyber-criminals are up to
their same old tricks -- stealing users' private data -- but they have
concocted a far more advanced and sophisticated method. They are now
embedding their malicious code into legitimate Web sites using Web-
hosting servers"

I just had an experience I found very disturbing.

I was using Firefox to view a reputable site (a Sydney Morning Herald
'Business Day' page) when a small firefox message window opened up.

It was similar, I think, to the windows that open up when you submit
an
incomplete form - you know the ones that say, for example, "you must
include
a valid email address" - which I think are triggered by some script
in the

web page code?

Except this window said something like:

"please enter username and password for "" at commbank.com.au"

- I should have made a note of the exact wording but I was in too
much of a

rush to hit the "CANCEL" button!!

Except now I'm worried - it doesn't seem likely that a SMH page would
include a phishing script - so where did the window come from?

Is it possible that I've unwittingly downloaded some malware that's
managed
to infect my Firefox application - and if so could it possibly
intercept my

valid banking sessions?

I'm aware of the usual phishing tatics like the "you must validate
your
account security' type emails - but I haven't heard or read of
anything like

this.

On the other hand, I didn't have any valid CBA windows/tabs open -
so there
is no way this could have been a valid request! Besides, although
banks like
ING DO use windows like this to advise you that you are now
transacting on
your "personal" or "business" accounts and Adelaide bank DID once
use some

strange kind of script logon method, there is no way that CBA would
introduce any drastic changes without lots of prior warning/
explanation.

So... Does anyone have any idea what might have been going on here -
anyone
heard of anything similar. Are there any special checks I can/should
do?

Cheers
