Re: MYOB

2008-09-25 Thread Alex Novakovic

Hi All on this subject

I never recommend that users move files between computers on a regular
basis - if you can avoid it. Most people are not as organised as you
are Susan, and invariably the time arises when a user gets distracted
or rushed, forgets to take a backup for work on the other computer,
gets there, thinks that they have, continues to work on the file.
This may happen a couple or more times before you become aware of
"missing" data. That is where the mess arises. I just don't think
that it is worth it unless you really have to, especially if you are a
person who is not regular and up to date with reconciling bank
accounts, as this process helps find errors/messes.

Stuart's idea of using an external drive is good although it may have
limitations where more than one person is involved in the data entry,
if one person wants to keep working on the file in one location after
the other person has gone (who wants to continue at home for example).

Kyle's suggestion of using Dropbox: I have no experience with it but
I would be EXTREMELY careful using this method as it may not work with
a MYOB data file. I would test it very vigorously before trusting it -
do one or two transactions, note them down exactly, do your Dropbox
thing and then check if the transactions have come across. That is one
scenario. Another would be to do two transactions in one file, two in
another, then try the Dropbox thing and see if they are all together
in the "merged" file.

Myob some time ago revoked the multiuser status of AccountEdge but but
it can still be used in multiuser mode. Martin: multiuser means ONE
data file, more than one computer (although you can have more than one
business file).

Stuart: I have seen variable results in WIndows Premier performance -
it is not all bad, some are good and some are slow despite all efforts.

The next year will probably see some big changes in the MYOB programme
- I think it is being rewritten - and should result in a leaner,
meaner MYOB!

Hi Martin,

MYOB is not a great network product. Windows or Mac. We have
customers using different MYOB products and there are various
issues. Even the networking products (AccountEdge for Mac and
Premier for Windows) are terrible. There is a lot of information out
there about improving performance of MYOB across a network and the
results are not great. We had a customer spend heaps on gigabit
network equipment for minimal improvement. The only way to get good
network performance is to run on a Terminal Server setup (Windows)
or similar for Mac.

AccountEdge will let you work on the data file from 3 computers at
the same time across a network. I have a few customers with this
configuration. With FirstEdge it is a single computer product. Even
with FirstEdge you can have the data file on one computer, and open
that from another computer on the same network- obviously only one
computer can have it open at a time. Again I have customers doing
this. It is important to note that MYOB will not support this
scenario, but they don't need to know. We recommend you keep regular
backups and also regularly optimise the company file (once a month).

In a nutshell, you can keep the data file on an external drive (even
a thumb drive if it is not too big) and open it on different
computers, or you can copy it between computers. You MUST keep track
of it though, because if you do work on the data file on one
computer, and then do work on it on another computer, but forget to
copy it first, then you CANNOT merge the changes. If that happens
you CAN export the data that has changed and import it to the other
data file, but you must know what it is that has changed. In MYOB
you can export pretty much export/import everything (sales, orders,
card files, inventory etc). I've had to do it several times. Because
of this I prefer the single data file on a computer or the single
data file on a removable drive of some type.

Cheers,
Stuart

Re: mobile suggestions

2008-09-25 Thread Paul Doyle

Hi Rosemary,

I'm lucky enough to have recently been given an iPhone to play with
and I think you could do worse than getting one of them. It all works
so easily. It combines my ipod, pda and phone into one slender package.

It replaces a Palm Treo which runs some version of windows. Not bad
but not great for syncing with my mac.

Prior to that I used a series of Palm PDAs for calendar & contact
info and only used the various basic mobile phones I had for making
and receiving calls.

It's always a good thing to have your contacts and calendar synced
with a computer somewhere. That way when someone nicks your phone or
you drop it, you can sync the replacement and get all the info back
in your pocket. My contacts and calendar info has been leapfrogging
from one device to another for years now. When my 20year high school
reunion came round last month i was able to retrieve all the contact
information I collected for the 10year reunion and hand it over to
those foolish enough to join the organizing committee this time round:-)

Good luck with your search for the right device for your needs.

Cheers
Paul Doyle

Re: little fan is dead

2008-09-25 Thread malcolm Tate
You can also set a free standing fan to run onto it from beside it,
we use this when using the laptop for long periods and find it works
rather well, even if it does get a little cold using the mouse on
cold days.

Accessing a Mail mailbox from another Mac ?

2008-09-25 Thread Steven Knowles
Is there a way of allowing access (ie. view, compose, send, receive
etc) to a particular Mailbox within Apple Mail on one's own Mac, to a
3rd party operating from another Mac ? In other words, so that the 3rd
party has full access to that Mailbox, but no other mailboxes that
have been set up?

Incidentally, so glad I made the move from Entourage to Mail after
many years using Entourage. Mail is heaps better!

Cheers, Steven
