Superduper update

2009-09-01 Thread David Paul

For those who use Superduper, it has just been updated to version
2.6.1(v86) and is Snow Leopard friendly according its developers.

64-bit Kernel and Extensions

2009-09-01 Thread Paul Willemse

  Hello all,

My system as below (from 'about this Mac') does not install the 64 bit
options. It is less than two years old and should, according to Apple,
install the 64 bit version. There are no PPC Apps on the system.

Any hints?

Thanks,

Paul

Meeting tonight...

2009-09-01 Thread David Peake

Hey WAMUG,

Long time reader/posted but I'll be attending my first WAMUG meeting
tonight, should be good!

Particularly interested in seeing the Apple TV demo as I'm looking to
get myself one in the not too distant future.

Will I need to become a donating member tonight? If so, who do I need
to go see first up to sign up?

Regards,
David.

I used SuperDuper v.2.6,1 (v.86) to create a bootable backup of my
entire HD immediately after installing Snow Leopard and it worked fine.

No problems at all.

Hi Paul,

No, your Mac Pro 2,1 is not capable.
The 2008 Mac Pro 3,1 Mac Pro 4,1 are capable of booting into 64-
bit kernel. That means holding down the 6 and 4 keys at boot.

Only the early 2008 Xserve 2,1 and Early Xserve 3,1 have K64 status

Re: 64-bit Kernel and Extensions

2009-09-01 Thread Paul Willemse

Hi Ronni, Shay,

I found the following Terminal command:

ioreg -l -p IODeviceTree | grep firmware-abi

The answer is: firmware-abi = EFI32 so the firmware is the older
version. I purchased the Mac Pro from Apple in May 2008 so it maybe a
borderline version? I have send an email to Apple Support, let us see
what they say.

Thanks for the info,

Paul

Snow Leopard Improvements Explained

2009-09-01 Thread Dark1

The Mac Rumors site had a link to a detailed look on the improvements
found in 10.6. It's pretty interesting stuff but possibly a bit too
technical for most people. It also explains why running a 64bit
kernal is completely unnecessary at the moment and not recommended.

Here's the link

Re: 64-bit Kernel and Extensions

2009-09-01 Thread Malcolm Burtenshaw

It might be worth mentioning that 64-bit mode isn't required to run 64-bit
apps. You only need 64-bit kernel mode if you're going to be accessing more
than 64GB of RAM or need more than 4G of kernel address space. Take a look at
the Activity Monitor and you should see Intel (64 bit) under the process type
for a good majority of your apps and services running.

OS X runs 64-bit apps perfectly fine with a 32-bit kernel and 32-bit drivers so
long as you have a 64-bit CPU.

Epson Stylus PHOTO RX650 All-In-One compatibility with Snow Leopard

2009-09-01 Thread Brian Scott

Hi,

It took me while to get the Epson software working when I changed from
Tiger to Leopard so

I'm somewhat hesitant to go to Snow Leopard.

There doesn't appear to be much movement toward updating it's software
including Epson Scan
on http://www.epson.com/ or http://www.epson.com.au/ though I'm
probably being a bit impatient

considering the complexity of printer software.

Can anyone who has the RX650 that has gone to Snow Leopard report
whether or not they are having

any difficulty printing and scanning with it.

I'd like to be Rosetta free if possible when I do update to 10.6

Thanks

Brian Scott
