Hi Susan,

Telstra has confirmed that it's not charging extra for iPhone tethering. It's
included in your current Data Pack usage.
Go over your Data Pack limit and you will pay for the extra browsing at a
reduced rate

There’s no extra charge, although you’ll need to be very mindful of your
included data allowance, as tethering is a surefire way to burn through that
150MB if you’re on a smaller plan (such as I am $50 a mth which includes 150MB
which equates to 153,600kB Data pack )

"Data used when tethering is charged at either a ‘Pay as you go’ rate or as
part of a Browsing Pack."

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: OT: Mobile phone tethering

2009-12-07 Thread Michael Hawkins

Thank you Gav.

It's been a while since I've tried Bluetooth. It used to work wonderfully
well but seemed to stop doing so for me after one of the OS 10.5 updates.
The cynic in me thought it was a deliberate plot to drive people to purchase
iPhones, but I never could understand my logic for thinking that.

Now I'm using SL, I'll give Bluetooth another go.

Cheers,

Michael.

OT: Mobile phone tethering

2009-12-07 Thread Michael Hawkins

I'm out of contract for mobile broadband and about to come out of contract
for a mobile phone. I thought that because my mobile broadband dongle
contained a sim card I assumed it could be used in a mobile phone (and
vice-versa), and so have been trying find out if all I need to do to connect
to the internet is to plug my mobile phone into my Mac's usb port, and "dial
up". Is that what "tethering" is, and if so, who offers it and what phones
can be used?

yesterday when my iphone was connected to my Mac, but then found this article

Re: external hard drive?

2009-12-07 Thread Ronda Brown
Hello Rosemary,

The 1TB Western Digital MyBook is a good drive, I use one in my "BackUp
Strategy", but don't use the software that is on it!
Don't use the software that comes on the Western Digital MyBook.
Erase the Drive and format it Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
Partition Map Scheme: GUID Partition Table - (for bootability on Intel-based
Macs).
You could format it with Two Partitions if you want ... One Partition for your
SuperDuper Clone of your system, the other Partition to hold your iPhoto
Library.

Then use SuperDuper to create a Bootable Clone (Duplicate) of your whole system
on onto the first partition

Then move your iPhoto Library to the other Partition on the external Drive:
1. Make sure iPhoto is Quit.
2. Copy the "entire iPhoto Library folder" to the new drive.
That's the only way to copy the photos and the database, which includes albums,
keywords, and all other iPhoto metadata.
3. Now rename the iPhoto Library in the original destination "iPhoto
Library.Old" (or something to differentiate it)
4. Once copied, you can Option-launch iPhoto, choose the library on the
External Drive, ("iPhoto Library," that's the library you've moved to the
external drive), and open it to check that it functions properly.
5. iPhoto should load all your photos.
Before you get all delete happy, double check your photos. Maybe keep the
"iPhoto Library.Old" around for a few days. Just in case.

Remember if you are using iPhoto Library from the External Drive, that you
should backup your iPhoto Library on a regular basis since it'll no longer be
part of your Time Machine backup.

Cheers,
Ronni

RE: Is Help topic on restoring system via Time Machi ne correct?

2009-12-07 Thread Alan Smith
Hi Ronni

Thanks for pursuing the finer details. The Lexmark uninstall app may have
left some residual stuff. As the X1170 driver didn't fully install I still
had access to the downloaded install and other files, in a folder readable
with Finder. This folder included the Uninstall utility. This cleared all
visible X1170 components but had a message to the effect that not all files
were automatically deleted and would need manual intervention. The
non-functional Dock icons (alias's?) were deleted with Force Quit. I
couldn't find any obvious leftover files. I did this yesterday so I don't
clearly recall all actions and responses.

I still have one strange text file with name InstalledPrinters.plist which
is copied below. This is located under
Devices>MacintoshHD>Library>Printers. As the list doesn't refer to any
printer it may be a leftover from the Lexmark installation attempt. Is it
safe to delete this - or safer just to leave it ?

Regards, Alan

Hi Alan,

Yep, the X1170 won't work in Snow Leopard, Lexmark haven't updated their
drivers for quite a lot of their printers.

Make sure you uninstall your old Lexmark drivers. If you deleted the Alias:
you should find the uninstal.app in
/Library/Printers/Lexmark/SomeNumber*/*YourPrinterModel*/ and delete the
printer in your Home/Library/Printers/.

Cheers,

Ronni

Your instructions are much clearer than the Help file comments. I will add
them to my collection. I will read the KB and forum articles before I
attempt anything about restoring the system.I probably will not even try
it unless things really fall apart.

I have also abandoned attempts to install the Lexmark x1170 printer as it is
not fully compatible with OS 10.6.2 although the scanner function (only
reason I wanted it!) was workable.

Hi Alan,

If you wish to go ahead and Restore your system.

To Restore your entire Disk Using Time Machine:

1. Make sure the drive containing your Time Machine backup is attached to
your Mac.

2. Locate your Mac OS X Install DVD and insert it in your Mac's optical
drive.

3. Restart (or turn on) your Mac. Immediately after you hear the startup
chime, press and hold the C key until you see the grey Apple logo on the
screen.

4. Click through the language selection screen.

5. When the Welcome screen appears, choose Utilities > Disk Utility.

6. Select your computer's internal disk in the list on the left.

7. On the Erase view, click Erase, and confirm that you really want to do
that.
Disk Utility erases the disk.
Quit Disk Utility.

8. If you're restoring from a directly connected drive or from a Time
Capsule connected via Ethernet:

9. Choose Utilities > Restore System from Backup and click Continue.

10. Select your Time Machine backup volume and click Continue again.

11. If the Time Machine disk contains backups for more than one Mac, select
the one you want from the Restore From pop-up menu.
Then select the particular backup you want to restore-likely the most recent
one (the first one in the list). Click Continue.

12. On the Select a Destination screen, select your internal disk. Click
Restore.
If prompted, confirm that you really do want to restore your data.

Time Machine restores your data. When it finishes, follow the instructions
to restart your computer.

NOTE WELL:
Once you've restarted after restoring your data, Time Machine will run
again, but starting from scratch with a new, full backup.
That is to say, Time Machine essentially ignores all your previous backups.
Apple claims this is "normal" behaviour
(), though it may not be what you expect
or want.

On Snow Leopard, it's not supposed to happen, according to Apple, but it
sometimes does.

Also READ this before Restoring your system: It was written before Snow
Leopard, but information is similar.
