Hi Peter,

You can check your Mac's processor type by launching System Profiler (located
in Applications/Utilities, clicking the "Hardware" tab, then looking at the
"Processor Name:" entry.
If you see "Intel Core 2 Duo" or "Xeon," your system is 64-bit. If you see
"Intel Core Duo," your system is 32-bit.

NOTE

The Intel Core Duo processor is a 32-bit processor.

If your Intel-based Mac has a 32-bit processor
then Snow Leopard will run as a 32-bit system.

The Intel Core 2 Duo processors are 64-bit processors.

If your Intel-based Mac has a 64-bit processor
then Snow Leopard will run as a 64-bit system.
---
If your Mac is running in 64-bit mode, you can use the Get Info window on
Safari to enable/disable running in 64-bit mode.

Cheers,
Ronni

Thanks for this Ronni, how does one know if they have Safari in 64-bit or

Safari problem?

2010-03-09 Thread Severin Crisp

For years I have bought books on the internet, using Safari, from
Doubleday whose catalog I receive regularly. Last evening and several
times this morning, with Safari, I was able to login and select items
but unable to transfer to Shopping Cart, endless loading loop it
seemed. Clearing cache, restart etc had no effect. With Firefox it
went straight through.

Has anyone else seen this on that site?

Re: wireless house network

2010-03-09 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Brian,

You're welcome. I think the Airport Express setup bmight be a bit out of date,
I seem to recall it might still only have the WDS setup.
Basically you will need to:

A) Configure the main base station (in your case the Airport Express)

1. In the AirPort Utility, in the toolbar, click AirPort.

2. In the Wireless view, choose "Create a Wireless Network" from the Wireless
Mode pop-up menu.

3. In the same view, check "Allow This Network To Be Extended"

4. Click Update to restart the base station with that setting.

B) Configure additional base station. (in your case the Airport Extreme)

1. In AirPort Utility, in the toolbar, click AirPort.

2. In the Wireless View, select "Extend a Wireless Network" from the
Wireless Mode pop-up menu.

3. Check Allow Wireless Clients if you want the remote base station
to be available via Wi-Fi, not just to Ethernet-attached computers.

4. In the same view, set your Wireless Security choice and Wireless
Password to be identical with your main base station.

5. Click Update, and you should be prompted after the base station restarts for
the base station password of the main unit.
(If the password is the same for the main and additional base station, you may
not be prompted.)

Hope that helps you a bit.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Brian,

Are both the Airport Extreme and the Airport Express 802.11n?

1. If either device is NOT 802.11n capable, you would need to use WDS.
2. If both devices are 802.11n capable you can use the 802.11n "extend network"
feature.

There is a performance difference between a WDS connection and Extend Network
connection. "Extend Network" is the newer technology. I won't go into all the
details about WDS & Extend Network here. The inherent disadvantage of the WDS
is that for each base station added, the overall bandwidth is cut in half. This
doesn't appear to be as pronounced with the "extend a network" feature. Of
course in order to set up the second option all the base stations must be the
newer 802.11n models.

So, depending on which you have 1. or 2. Use the Airport Express as the Main
Base Station and Airport Extreme as the Remote Base Station.

Cheers,

Ronni

YES! It very well could have, most likely did ...

To answer your question
>> Is it better to have SSL ticked or unticked

You use the setting your ISP gave you. As I said before "some POP and IMAP
servers support SSL, some don’t."
I use Wesntet POP, it does not support SSL, & MobileMe IMAP, which does support
SSL ... so I have NO TICK in Westnet "Use SSL", but DO HAVE TICK in MobileMe
IMAP "Use SSL".

Cheers,

Cheers,

Enable WDS on both Airports and yes you can share wirelessly.

Use the Airport Express as the Base Station and the Airport Extreme as the
relay.

One downside is you may loose some network speed... particularly if the Express
is only 802.11g rated and your Extreme is capable of 802-11n.

Hi Gary,

Those symbols are "Bangs".

If you see those symbols by an account name in your sidebar, that account had a
failed connection.
This means Mail could contact the server, but received an error message before
it could log in.

If you encounter a bang, follow these steps:
1. Try again: Click the bang symbol to see the error message Mail encountered.
In the dialog that appears, click Take All Accounts Online. Sometimes errors
are fleeting and go away if you do this.

2. Check your authentication method: Mail can use any of several methods to
send your mail server your user name and
password. If you selected a method your mail server doesn’t understand, it will
complain.
On Mail’s Accounts preference pane, select your account, and click the Advanced
button. At the bottom of the Advanced view set the
Authentication pop-up menu to Password, close the Preferences window (saving
changes when prompted) and try to connect again.
If the error remains, repeat the procedure with the other options, starting
with MD5 Challenge-Response.

3. Verify your SSL setting: Another problem that can cause a bang is an
incorrect SSL setting—some POP and IMAP servers
support SSL, some don’t.

To check yours, go to Mail’s Accounts preference pane, select your account, and
click the Advanced button.
Toggle the state of the Use SSL checkbox, close the Preferences window (saving
changes when prompted), and try to connect again.

In most cases, one of these changes will solve your problem.

Cheers,
Ronni

RE: Time Capsule backups

Thanks all for your tips on my issue with excessively sized back ups and

Hi Peter,

Can I suggest that you go into your System Preferences, then Time
Machine, Options... and click on the Plus sign to select your movies
folder to exclude it from backups (you can also check the size of the
movies folder in the Finder). Then, ask your machine to "Back Up Now".
Check that the required size goes back to a reasonable level (if it
doesn't, there must be something else going on). This backup will at
least ensure that your normal files are safe.

Once a reasonable backup has occurred and you have some time for an
uninterrupted backup, go back into your Time Machine preferences and
remove your movies from the exclusion list and "Back Up Now".

James

Re: Time Machine disk

2010-03-09 Thread Ronda Brown

Hi Severin,

Adding to Stuart's comments.

Time Machine will, by design, fill up all the space available to it, so there
may be a conflict between the sparse bundle it puts your backups in, and the
other data.
There is a workaround, to "reserve" some space there, by creating a disk image
of the desired size and storing your data there, but it's a bit cumbersome, and
two Macs can't share it at the same time.

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Severin,

Time Machine will create a folder named backups.backupdb if you have the
drive connected directly. You can create another folder and store files in
there without affecting time machine, other than having less disk space
which won't be a problem until it is full.

Time Machine disk

2010-03-09 Thread Severin Crisp

I have a disk assigned as Time Machine disk (no partitions) and in use
by Time Machine with accumulated backups. I wish to use some of the
spare space on the disk for storing other files. Are there potential
problems?
1. Will Time Machine recognise the other material or regard the whole
disk as its province and overwrite it?
2. Will there be a problem if Time Machine is actively backing up and
I write new material at the same time?
3. I realise that 2. may not be a problem if I turn off Time Machine
while copying other material.

4. For a variety of reasons I do not want to partition the drive.
Thoughts comments and experiences welcomed!
