Re: ipad usage and is it worth getting?
Hi Lyn, I use the iPad for light Internet checking emails and the web. Using safari I have my bookmarks synced with my main Mac through MobileMe. I love it as an ebook reader using the Kindle app and Borders app. I watch tv shows and movies. I have the camera connection kit and upload photos, as well as having some of favorite albums from my main Mac synced. There are lots of little apps for all sorts of things, very useful. Of course can access my iTunes music, etc. Now my iPhone is used mainly as a phone. The iPad goes everywhere with me for everything else. Re: Final cut pro license # isues.
Ronni's solution, as always, is elegant. Alternatively, I have an encrypted, password protected disk image of a Word document which gives a very flexible way of saving all sorts of useful and important information securely in brief or at length. On receiving any serial number or necessary code, I immediately enter it. As a double check, I do copy and then paste into the application or whatever when requested at install, and of course I also keep the originals if convenient. Re: Using iPhone Overseas
Hi Rod,I understand that the rate depends on the service provider you happen to be hooked up to at the time. This can vary. You have the option with the iPhone to lock onto one particular provide or automatically connect to the strongest signal. The data will be charged by the service provider over there, I doubt it will come out of your allocated $10 data pack.I have found that most places you stay at now-a-days has WiFi and you can connect on to these either cheaply or free. Rod, you are most likely better off buying data off your hotel's wireless network - I'm on the 3 network, and it was going to cost a bomb to use that due to the call costs. Re: Using iPhone Overseas
I used mine in the UK last year for calls and data, until Optus phoned me. My data had run up the bill into 4 digits and was $40/Mb. None of it was included in my Aus contract ($49 cap plan). Last time I went to UK I bought a Tesco sim and it worked fine in my iPhone after a call to their support line. Good deals like pay Ten Pounds and get 20 Pounds worth of credit free (I think they said Unlimited Data but they have a fair use policy and the small print says 100Mb max per week) Hope this helps. Check the small print on the Telstra contract or call them for data rates overseas. Andrew On 23/06/2010, at 5:24 PM, Rod Blitvich wrote: Dear WAMUGers Please can you help? iOS4 bug?
Hi, I was wondering if anyone else can replicate this apparent bug in iOS4? On my MacBook Pro running OSX 10.6.4 I use the birthday date entered into Address Book to show birthdays in iCal. Works fine. I sync this data to my iPhone 3GS running iOS4 via the iTunes 9.2, USB connection setup. Now when I look at the birthday calendar on my iPhone using the Calendar app it shows everyone's birthday correctly except for people over 80 years old. I don't know at exactly what age it stops showing birthdays, but all my entries for people over 80 are not shown, I don't have any entries for people between 70 and 80. If I use the iDayLite app to show birthdays they are all shown correctly, and the data all shows up in the Contacts app. I don't know if this was an issue in iOS 3.1.3, but I never noticed it. Can someone check to see if it is unique to my configuration, or if it is more widespread. regards, Robin -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au

I highly recommend turning Data Roaming off to avoid the annoying $400 data bill. I just turned it on when I found myself needing to use Maps or look up timetables etc. then turned it straight off again. If you're going to be over there for a while it may be worth sourcing a local data provider's SIM. Have fun, Shay On 23/06/2010 5:24 PM, Rod Blitvich wrote: Dear WAMUGers Please can you help? To give you an idea of cost... less than 3 mins in the UK whilst roaming cost $25 (run as a test for work). Best bet is either, as others have suggested, get a local SIM in the country you are traveling to or talk to your mobile provider before you go to see what other options there might be. MacBook Pro Trackpad problem
Hi All I have an interesting one here, so looking for some ideas ;) (Long day,...brain half asleep,..etc) Have a client with a MacBookPro (2GHz/2GB RAM/80GB HDD) running 10.4.11 all OS updates. As they've said They aren't sure what they've done but for some reason during a program crash or restart something has happened to their trackpad button. It won't accept clicks. You can move the arrow around the screen you just can't click on anything. At first I thought easy,..Universal Access or Trackpad setting. But nope. They have a Bluetooth Mouse, so plugged this to use it. And strangely enough. Same thing. The mouse will move around the cursor on screen. It will right click,...but no left (single) click. I've gone through with them over the phone in a lengthy call (as they live in Port Hedland) the following:- Removed com.apple.systemprefernces.plist com.apple.universalaccess.plist com.apple.finder.plist (I think there was a couple more,..but now can't remember,..lol). Restarted numerous times. PRAM Zap Tried to run Disk Utility and Repair Permissions, but we can't get as far as clicking the Repair Permission button. (we managed to get the application open and select the drive..just no keyboard command to tell it to start repair...lol. Have checked Trackpad in System Preferences and all the correct things are ticked. Checked Universal Access and made sure that Mouse Keys was off, which it was. Also checked Sticky Keys, which was also off. (And checked the other settings versus what I have, and all matched). Googled through a few articles changing what I was searching for a few times to try modify the results. Got a couple of similar articles, one saying to repair permissions and it would fix it. Problem is,..we can't. I've suggested tomorrow if she can to beg, borrow or steal a USB mouse (rather then a Bluetooth one) and see what results with that. But I'm not holding my breath. Oh, and also tried to start up in Safe Boot Mode (shift key held down). But that didn't help either. Same thing,..no mouse click. So. I'm at a bit of a loss. Hoping someone may have some other solutions or ideas to try. Or maybe I'm looking for something completely different and it's actually an easy fix! :o) (And it's actually very difficult to control a computer when you can't use a click. You certainly have to remember all the keyboard commands again to do things). Oh, and Fn-5 or Fn-F5 didn't work as a Mouse click either. I think that was everything I tried. Brain in late mode, so I'm sure I'll remember something else after I post this. ;) Sorry for the long email. Just wanted to show I'd covered a few things so as to not waste too much time. Look forward to any suggestions ;O) (Short of a fix, she's thinking of posting the laptop back to me to work on before she comes back to Perth for a short visit) Thanks!! Re: MacBook Pro Trackpad problem
Hi Daniel, I had something similar (a bit different though), happen to a client's new MacBook just lately. He was unable to 'double click' on anything. The only way I could open anything on his MB was by 'control-click'. I noticed he had Double-Click speed set at the highest speed (Fast), or too fast by normal measure. To correct this problem, I did these steps: 1. System Preferences-- Trackpad 2. Reset trackpad to Default settings. A) Tracking Speed to the 5th or 6th mark B) Double-click speed to the 6th or 7th mark C) Scrolling speed to 5th or 6th mark You can test ( experiment) Double-Click Speed and drag the slider to the middle (between slow and fast), or whatever is suitable so that it is effective when you double-click once. RE: Using iPhone Overseas
Rod, you mentioned Malaysia specifically, I always turn of data roaming when I am in K.L. and use the multitude of free wi fi spots, they can be found in a lot of cafe's, pub's and hotel lobbys ( you sometimes have to be a bit cheeky and say you are a guest/meeting a guest and just need the password for the free wifi in the lobby!). Malaysia generally is pretty good for internet access in hotels. You will notice you bill go up even for calls as well if you are a heavy user of the phone for standard call and txt with Telstra, as their roaming charges can be quite high on some plans. I have used prepaid sim's in k.l. as well, but gave up as I wanted people to be able to call my number in australia and not give them an new number for each country. Re: Using iPhone Overseas
I'd suggest you do the alternate sim card bit. Just back from the States my provider 3 network screwed it up when I asked them to turn International roaming OFF, they made sure it was turned ON. Thinking it was off I used the phone to look at sites etc ran up a bill of nearly $400, thinking I was in a Wi Fi situation, which i was most of the time. I had a discussion with 3 they have dropped the charges. Buy a Skype unlimited plan call people at home or in the office for free from a Wi Fi area, mobiles are not free but they're a lower rate, I think it cost me about $9 for a 15 - 20 minute conversation. Re: MacBook Pro Trackpad problem
Have you tried booting of the install CD, see if it works when not booted from the OS on the hard drive? If it works you could do an archive install. On 24/06/2010, at 2:26 AM, Daniel Kerr wrote: Hi All I have an interesting one here, so looking for some ideas ;) (Long day,...brain half asleep,..etc) Have a client with a MacBookPro (2GHz/2GB RAM/80GB HDD) running 10.4.11 all OS updates. Keychain help please
Hi Ronni When you recently responded to a query and indicated how you use Keychain I decided I should have a look at whether I should be doing likewise. I didn't get very far, was not sure what to do so just left it alone. At least that's what I thought I had done but now I am locked out of Mail and am constantly asked for a password. The only password I know to use is my Login password which is not accepted. I've tried clicking on the closed padlock but that has no effect. I've followed the steps in Mail Help but still cannot get anywhere. Please can you tell me what I have done to cause this problem. The only way I can access Mail is to go through my ISP and webmail. It will be something like 'mail.iinet.com.au' 4. double click on the icon beside it 5. select 'show password' 6. Type in your admin password Keychain will then show you your Mail Account password. Hi Ronni Thanks for that but still no joy. I've followed the steps you mention but when I select show password I am asked for my keychain login password. The only password I know is my main login password and when I insert that I get a message saying it is invalid. Is there a separate admin password? Hi Laura, You say below that you did 'Verify' your login keychain … You had to type in your Administrator(User Account) password to allow you to do that?
