Sorry Chris, I sent the direct link for the iPad iOS 4.3 update download.
I’ve added a link now that will take you to a site to download the correct
version for your iPod Touch

Hi Chris,

You could try updating iOS 4.3 manually.

How To Update to iOS 4.3 Manually

Step 1: Download the iOS 4.3 IPSW file for your device using the iOS 4.3 IPSW
direct download links.
Direct download link from Apple is here

Step 2: Connect your device to the computer using the USB cable and wait for
iTunes to detect it.

Step 3: Once your device has been detected – follow the steps below:
Hold the Option key and then click on the Check for
Update/Update button.

Step 4: In the next dialog browse to the file that you downloaded from Step 1
and select the IPSW file.

Step 5: iTunes will now use the IPSW file and update your device to iOS 4.3.

The process should take around 10-20 minutes.

Cheers,
Ronni

I don't think the problem is with the iOS 4.3 update in particular. I
updated some weeks back and it is usually a matter of minutes for the
download. I think the problem may be a general slowdown of the Apple servers
related to the international release of iPad 2. I downloaded a three hour
video from iTunes University last night and had to leave it to run
overnight. It took about 5 hours to download whereas normally it would have
taken the order of 15 minutes.

These were all on an iiNet connection, with lots of other uploads and

Re: MobileMe calendar upgrade - how to amend email address?

2011-03-26 Thread Steven Knowles
Thanks Ronni.

I gave that a test. Sending the Mail Event went okay. When it came to accepting
the incoming .ics file (I sent it to myself using a different mail address),
iCal threw up:

The server responded with an error. Access to “New Event” in “Name of
Calendar” in account “u...@me.com” is not permitted. The server responded:
“HTTP/1.1 403 Forbidden” to operation CalDAVWriteEntityQueueableOperation.

The options to select from are Go Offline or Revert to Server (the latter
being the default). If Go Offline is selected, the entry is inserted into
iCal. If Revert to Server is selected, the entry is not placed in iCal. I
guess the recipient wouldn't ordinarily be me, so not something I'd need to
worry about.

Anyway, could be a 2nd best option in the interim as you say Ronni, the
downside being no auto notifications and audit trail of who's declined/accepted
etc.

Cheers, Steven

I can't see anything obvious, how do I override this setting and have iCal
send invitations from an email address other than me.com ? I only have my
me.com address in order to have a MobileMe account, so I don't want to use
 it publicly.

 Hi Steven,

Perhaps a work around for you until something is resolved in MobileMe.
I just tried this and it works fine, you can use any email address you choose.

 1. Create an Event in iCal

 2. Control-Click (Right-Click) and select “Mail Event”

It’s easy and it sends a standard calendar event to the recipient.
With a message informing them of the event you have invited them to, and “To
add it to your calendar, click the link below.
 Which is a standard iCal.ics

I know its not what you want, but might do in the interim.

I have had a couple of these calls, the first I managed to convince
these people that I couldn't possibly have a problem as all my e-mails
came through the Mac server, which would mean that had the Mac server

process, I then hung up.
The second time I received a call I told them that I didn't have a
computer, You don't have a computer? No I said, I'm 64 years old
and have retired, now tell me what the hell would I want with a bloody
computer, there was an apology and then they hung up, no more calls.

Hi Pedro

http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/

Basically it's another form of video content/player. Much like QuickTime,
Real Player, VLC, Flip4Mac/Windows Media Player, Perian, Flash, etc etc etc.
I could keep going but that sort gives the point,..lol.

The reason you need it is that the Channel 9 site probably uses their
content to display the video.

One of the fun things with video and web content. So many different versions
around, and players to match.

The main ones I always recommend to clients are the above listed ones I
mentioned.
To me these ones give the Swiss Army Knife approach. If you have all those
players, you've got your bases covered for whatever content you come across.
(hopefully)

On new setups I do for clients I recommend (and install if the want) the
above as it makes their life easier then trying to hunt around and find all
the players ;)

Hope that helps.

Kind Regards
Daniel

Hi Pedro,

In addition to what Daniel said, Silverlight is Microsofts attempt to replicate
Adobe Flash. It copies most of the functionality of Flash and works in a
similar fashion. As usual it is Microsofts attempt to enter an existing market
by plagiarising the market leader.

Microsoft itself has indicated that they are moving to HTML 5, so the years of
Silverlight may be numbered.

Re: MobileMe calendar upgrade - how to amend email address?

2011-03-26 Thread Ronda Brown
Works for me Steven.

When the email with the Subject: You’ve been invited to “ Event arrives in
Apple Mail Application.
I click on Accept button
Then Safari Opens
click ‘download .ics’
And Add Event is then added to into iCal

——
To invite people to an event:

• Make sure you’ve created a card for yourself in Address Book (in your
Applications folder).

To create your own card, open Address Book and click the Add (+) button below
the Name column. Then enter your information (be sure to include all of your
email addresses) and choose Card Make This My Card. (For more information,
open Address Book and choose Help Address Book Help.)

• Double-click the event you want to invite people to. If necessary,
click Edit to open the event editor.

• To add the first person, click Add Invitees and type the email
address for the person you want to invite.

If someone has already been invited to the event, click to the right of the
name, and then type the email address for the person you want to invite.

If you’re inviting someone whose contact information is stored in your Mac OS X
Address Book, start typing their name, iCal completes the email address for
you. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to choose the name and address you
want, and then press Return to select it.

• To invite more than one person, press the Return key (or type a
comma) after each address, and then type the next one.

If your contacts are stored in Address Book, you can also use the Address panel
in iCal to quickly add invitees to your event.

• To remove an address from the invitees list, click the arrow next to
the name, and choose Remove Invitee (this doesn’t remove the person from your
Address Book).

• When you’re ready to invite these guests to your event, click the
Send button at the bottom of the event editor.

By default, guests receive the event invitation in an email message and in
their iCal Notifications box if they use iCal (invitees can change this setting
in iCal preferences). If you make any changes to the event, be sure to click
the Send button again.

As guests respond to your invitation through iCal, messages from them appear in
your iCal Notifications box. To view their responses, click the Notifications
button in the lower-left corner of the iCal window (looks like an envelope).

Cheers,
Ronni

 Thanks Ronni.

I gave that a test. Sending the Mail Event went okay. When it came to
accepting the incoming .ics file (I sent it to myself using a different mail
 address), iCal threw up:

The server responded with an error. Access to “New Event” in “Name of
Calendar” in account “u...@me.com” is not permitted. The server responded:
“HTTP/1.1 403 Forbidden” to operation CalDAVWriteEntityQueueableOperation.

The options to select from are Go Offline or Revert to Server (the latter
being the default). If Go Offline is selected, the entry is inserted into
iCal. If Revert to Server is selected, the entry is not placed in iCal. I
guess the recipient wouldn't ordinarily be me, so not something I'd need to
 worry about.

Anyway, could be a 2nd best option in the interim as you say Ronni, the
downside being no auto notifications and audit trail of who's
 declined/accepted etc.

 Cheers, Steven

MobileMe asked me recently to upgrade to the new calendar version, which
I reluctantly did. Now if I set up a Calendar entry via iCal and invite
others, the invitation is sent from my me.com email address, rather than

I can't see anything obvious, how do I override this setting and have iCal
send invitations from an email address other than me.com ? I only have my
me.com address in order to have a MobileMe account, so I don't want to use
 it publicly.

 Hi Steven,

Perhaps a work around for you until something is resolved in MobileMe.
I just tried this and it works fine, you can use any email address you
 choose.

 1. Create an Event in iCal

 2. Control-Click (Right-Click) and select “Mail Event”

It’s easy and it sends a standard calendar event to the recipient.
With a message informing them of the event you have invited them to, and
“To add it to your calendar, click the link below.
 Which is a standard iCal.ics

I know its not what you want, but might do in the interim.

 Ronni

Thank you everyone for your prompt answers...

When Daniel set up the iMac for Ali I remember he installed VLC for just such
an occasion , however the site is telling me we need
a more up to date version of silverlight to view the programme.

Is there any problem with updating to the newer version of silverlight( which I
don't I have installed in the first place) or is there a
work around

cheers

Re: updating ipod software

2011-03-26 Thread Ronda Brown

Cheers,
Ronni

It is a pity I cant just download it to my MBPro then do the update into the

On top of this I have a very unstable/variable and certainly not consistent

 Hi Chris and Nicholas,

I don't think the problem is with the iOS 4.3 update in particular. I
updated some weeks back and it is usually a matter of minutes for the
download. I think the problem may be a general slowdown of the Apple servers
related to the international release of iPad 2. I downloaded a three hour
video from iTunes University last night and had to leave it to run
overnight. It took about 5 hours to download whereas normally it would have
taken the order of 15 minutes.

2)!!! Im not sure if this usual for this model. Can someone please advise
if it is and I wont be impatient any more!!

It's not based on the model of iPod (nor iPhone or iPad)... this update
seems to be generally slow in downloading... it is around 600MB, if you can
 believe that!!!

I updated an iPhone 4 and iPod touch 3rd Gen last night... one took nearly
3 hours and the other mere 2 hours... when I did my own iPhone 4 the day
the update was released, it took three attempts... and ultimately eight
 hours to download.

These were all on an iiNet connection, with lots of other uploads and
downloads happening at the same time.

Also, the time indicator will change over time as network traffic
changes... he 3 hour one last night originally said it'd take 18 hours,
quickly changed to 10 hours and then wavered about between 1 and 10 hours
 as it downloaded

Australian iPad 2 is second cheapest!

2011-03-26 Thread cm

Hi Wamuggers,

I thought you may be interested (delighted perhaps) to hear that when converted
to a common currency (the euro or US dollar for instance) the price for the
Australian iPad 2 is the second lowest in the world after the US price. It is
currently about $12 more that some US states that have 13.7% sales tax. With a
slight variation in the exchange rate, it will be cheaper!

Here is a link to a Reuters' article referenced in an AppleInsider article
which, while it does not contain this information explicitly the comparative
Australian price can be got from reading between the lines.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/25/us-apple-ipad-prices-idUSTRE72O4D520110325?feedType=RSSfeedName=PersonalFinancerpc=43

Or if you prefer, here is a link to an almost illegible table from an Italian
web site that has the information explicitly

http://igadgetsreport.com/2011/03/24/international-ipad-2-price-comparison-chart/

Interestingly, New Zealand at Euro 413, is not much more expensive than
Australia at Euro 409. For comparison the US price before tax is Euro 390.

Cheers,
Carlo
