Recommendations of OCR software.
Hi everyone, I would like to scan and OCR pages of text, including columns (usually a feature of better software), using a Brother MFC, or any scanner really. Currently using OSX 10.6.7. I have VueScan (full version) and Escan Assist as scanner software. I don't mind paying for the OCR software. Any recommendations or ones to avoid? As that is my only source of income as a consultant through MacWizardry and differs to the help on WAMUG I thought it appropriate to keep them separate. :o) (thanks Ronni). iPad problems
Good evening All I am having some difficulties with my iPad. “Upgrade is now available for Calculator”, but I cannot upgrade. Tapping ‘Upgrade’ just brings up a warning about need to activate the app after the upgrade. Is this normal iPad procedure? I am unsure how to delete items from GoodReader when there are no buttons available on the screen, apart from Home. If I want to view something different in Good Reader I seem to need to open another App briefly, then go back to GoodReader. Otherwise I get a repeat of the item I have finished with. On the iPad I cannot change or add an appointment for today, only for future days. It has to be done on the Mac and synced to the iPad, not the reverse. Admittedly, an irritation rather than a difficulty! The screen rotation lock does not lock the rotation. All that happens is a popover speaker comes up briefly with, or without, a bar across it, depending on the position of the switch. A major factor in buying the iPad was that I dislike having to read long documents on the 20 inch screen of my iMac (crochetty old so and so), particularly a subscription report that I receive several times a week by email, and which is opened by clicking a URL in the text of the email. The iPad has been ideal for this but today, and the ultimate reason for this posting, is that the URL and the first page show up on the iPad but the URL is ‘greyed out’ and the page can’t be ‘scrolled’. I have checked the Mac iPad Manual and two Take Control books on the iPad from TidBits but maybe I am missing something. Any help will be gratefully received. Thank you for that Merv. I had a quick look there after I hit upgrade button on my 'lite version' but only gave Window's versions. I shall dig a bit deeper on the site. Apple website had PDF OCR X Pro version for AU $28 - yay $AU vs $US.$29 I just downloaded that to try too. Brian On 18/05/2011, at 9:57 PM, Merv Bond wrote: ABBYY Fine Reader is hard to beat. Re: iPad problems
Hi Ian, I'll start off with an attempt at one of the questions. The small side button above the volume rocker switch can be configured as a screen rotation lock, or a mute button. The on screen graphic will tell you which one it is. To select the function of the switch, go to the Settings app, select General in the left hand side picker, and scroll down to the Use Side Switch selector. Re: iPad problems
Ian, I perform all my upgrades/updates either by using the App Store from the iPhone iPad, or when syncing with iTunes. this gives me the option to 'update all' which it does after entering my iTunes store password. If things are still playing up or doing odd things, don't be afraid to turn your device off and restart it again. I find I need to do this a lot less with the later OS and devices, but it's still a useful trick to have up your sleeve. Re: iPad problems
Hi Ian, I’ve typed my answers under your questions below. On 18/05/2011, at 10:07 PM, Ian Reid wrote: “Upgrade is now available for Calculator”, but I cannot upgrade. Tapping ‘Upgrade’ just brings up a warning about need to activate the app after the upgrade. Is this normal iPad procedure? Perhaps you upgraded to the full version ($1.19) and it requires activation? Only I don’t think I had to activate it though after upgrading to the full version. I am unsure how to delete items from GoodReader when there are no buttons available on the screen, apart from Home. If I want to view something different in Good Reader I seem to need to open another App briefly, then go back to GoodReader. Otherwise I get a repeat of the item I have finished with. Either swipe a file name from left to right, or use the File Management features. There's a powerful set of File Management features accessible by selecting the Manage Files control panel on iPad. GoodReader is a great App, but you need to understand what it can do, and how to use it. It does have good help in the GoodReader App on the iPad by clicking the ?. A good starting point is The Manual” ;-) http://www.goodreader.net/gr-man.html And the “How-Tos” http://www.goodreader.net/gr-man-howto.html http://www.goodreader.net/gr-man-manage.html On the iPad I cannot change or add an appointment for today, only for future days. It has to be done on the Mac and synced to the iPad, not the reverse. Admittedly, an irritation rather than a difficulty! I don’t know why you are unable to change or add an appointment. To Add an appointment - Click the + button at bottom right, then fill in the details Title - Location- start end etc. click done To change an appointment - click the appt - then Edit - change details or “Delete Event” click done The screen rotation lock does not lock the rotation. All that happens is a popover speaker comes up briefly with, or without, a bar across it, depending on the position of the switch. Carlo has already answered this part but I’ll keep it all together in one email. Use the Side Switch: You can use that neat switch on the side either to enable and disable audio alerts (this doesn't affect video/audio playback) or to lock the screen's orientation in portrait or landscape mode. You can toggle which function is assigned to the side switch by opening Settings from the Home screen, selecting General, and choosing the function you want under the 'Use Side Switch to' heading. A major factor in buying the iPad was that I dislike having to read long documents on the 20 inch screen of my iMac (crochetty old so and so), particularly a subscription report that I receive several times a week by email, and which is opened by clicking a URL in the text of the email. Haven’t heard of this happening. Is it only happening in this one email or all emails on the iPad that have a URL? I have checked the Mac iPad Manual and two Take Control books on the iPad from TidBits but maybe I am missing something. Perhaps you are missing something in the translation ;-) Post back if you require any more information. Apple email software hoax
Hi All Got an email this morning, that looks just like an Apple mail out, offering cheap software - or discounted software. The whole email layout and indeed part of the page, makes it look like its come from Apple. But it isn't. Just be very wary of it. http://applesdownload.com/ And I wonder how long before it's down from the big Apple legal, :o) Kind regards Daniel --- Daniel Kerr MacWizardry Phone: 0414 795 960 Email: daniel @ macwizardry . com . au Web: http://www.macwizardry.com.au **For everything Macintosh** -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au
This Weekend?
On iLounge this morning. Apple’s retail store plans for this weekend stretch beyond the United States, according to a new report. Citing an Australian “tipster,” 9 to 5 Mac reports that all Apple retail stores in that country will undergo visual merchandising from 6pm to 6 am on Sunday the 22nd, with a sheet raised during that time to prevent anyone from seeing inside, with an all-hands meeting to begin directly afterwards. The report goes on to state that the phrase “Apple Store 2.0” is being mentioned in relation to the company’s plans. Interesting stuff! 1Password, Firefox4, Firefox PDF plug-in, 32-bit operation
Hi all, Since I know there are a few 1Password users out there and also some Firefox users - I thought I would pass on the following: Yesterday I finally decided to upgrade to Firefox4. A good move I think/hope - it seems much snappier. After setting up the toolbar how I like it and moving the tabs back down below the toolbar, I found my first problem - the PDF plug-in was not compatible with Firefox4. Google soon solved this with a compatible plug-in - however it currently requires running Firefox in 32 bit mode. I made the switch, pdfs open fine and off I went. Sometime later, I tried to use 1Password but found that it no longer worked in Firefox - at that time I didn't think about the 32 bit change but, since it was OK in Safari, I figured it had to be associated with the change to Firefox4. I found a related post at the Agile forums: http://forum.agile.ws/index.php?/topic/4733-firefox-4-extension-partially-r esponsive/page__gopid__27338 And soon got the answer: Also note that 1Password loads separate extensions for 32-bit and 64-bit scenarios. This is determined at the time the extension is installed (not every time it is activated when launching the browser). If you toggle Firefox's bit-ness between 32- and 64-bit you will need to completely uninstall and then reinstall the 1Password extension each time. I only mention this in case you often switch between the two. If you stay with 32-bit you will only need to reinstall the 1Password extension when you eventually make the switch to 64-bit at a later date. That was all it was - removing and re-installing the extension cured the problem. Just something to be aware of if you run 1Password and change your browser from 64 bit to 32 bit (or vice versa). David Interesting stuff for sure David ;-) http://www.macrumors.com/2011/05/18/weekend-retail-store-meetings-related-to-new-ipad-focused-staff-software/ It is beginning to appear, however, that the events may be a revamp of on-floor sales procedures that could see the company equipping its sales staff with iPads for checkout and on-floor demonstration purposes. We had heard last month that the events were related to internal training rather than a special event or launch, but continued rumors have brought ongoing attention to the possibility of something more. Yesterday, 9 to 5 Mac reported that it had received hints of the events being related to Apple Store 2.0, suggesting that the changes would be bringing significant changes to the functioning of the company's retail stores. AppleInsider now appears to be filling in the picture with a new report claiming that Apple retail stores have received shipments of dozens of iPads that appear to be destined for on-floor staff usage and are said to be set to be equipped with a new version of the company's RetailMe software to support the rollout. People familiar with Apple's retail operations revealed that stores across the U.S. have been stocked with dozens of iPads that are being prepared for use by employees. Training and utilization of the hardware could begin as soon as this weekend. In one location, nearly 40 iPads were supplied for a store with about 100 specialists. Based on those numbers, everyone working on any given day could be equipped with an iPad, perhaps in place of an iPod touch-based EasyPay terminal, which Apple stores switched to in 2009. The new RetailMe software offering product information and training materials for sales staff is said to potentially be the subject of the gigabytes of training data previously claimed to be scheduled for download to Apple's stores on Saturday, although that theory has yet to be confirmed. Update: 9 to 5 Mac has more on the retail revamp, claiming that Apple will be rolling out a number of enhancements to its stores including dedicated Startup Sessions areas for personal setup, iPad-based signage and information stations next to display machines, and new visual displays and sound systems. Finally, the company is said to be rolling out a revamped Apple Store application for iOS devices to assist customers with their in-store experience.” Guess we just 'Wait See' ;-) Cheers, Ronni 17 MacBook Pro 2.3GHz Quad-Core i7 “Thunderbolt 2.3GHz / 8GB / 750GB @ 7200rpm HD OS X 10.6.7 Snow Leopard Windows 7 Ultimate (under sufferance) -- The WA Macintosh User Group Mailing List -- Archives - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/archives.shtml Guidelines - http://www.wamug.org.au/mailinglist/guidelines.shtml Unsubscribe - mailto:wamug-unsubscr...@wamug.org.au
