Preparation for Lion
G'Day The latest update to Snow Leopard Mac OS X 10.6.8 is given as 275.3 MB download and the Combo is 1.09 GB, I can now understand what Steve Jobs meant in his email to a Mac user that it will be necessary to have this update in order to download Lion. I feel sorry for those on a slow download. Image Capture Automator
Hi, I am looking at scanning quite a few photo's and then editing them. I noticed a few post in the archives and on the web concerning Image Capture and later on using Automator to automate the process so that it would house the presets, such a naming application etc. I have an Epson Perfection 1650 Photo scanner and have always used the Epson scan application. I was pleasantly surprised with the some of the basic features of Image Capture, it automatically crops and straightens the images, an instant time saver! I was then confused with the Detect Separate Items option as when I used although I had set the Format to TIFF, the separate files emerged as jpeg's? Anyone have any idea how to stop this happening? The lack of pre-editing options compared to EPSON Scan is not a problem as I will be taking them into PS to tidy them all up anyway. But my real problem is, the Image Capture help page has a link Automatic Image Capture tasks with Automator and on the page it opens three links: Open Automator, Automator Website Applescript website. Now I now nothing about Automator and I believe, from what I read on the site, it is made for people like me, wrong. Okay, I open the link to Automator and the first page, gives me a drop down page with an option to 'Choose a template for your workflow on it is Image Capture Plugin, which are described as, Images Capture plugins are workflows that are available in Image Capture. They receive image files as input. I choose this. Now I expect to see Image Capture somewhere in the Actions Library or somewhere at least but no, it is nowhere. So I spent about 4 or 5 hours searching around the web for actions and could find nothing, though many places said it could be done using Automator none actually spelt out how. Could someone point me in the right direction. This way I would have TWO separate installations of Mac OS X, (Lion Snow Leopard) on my MBP can boot into Lion for testing purposes. If I find I don’t want to keep Lion, I can uninstall it without having to do a system restore from a Snow Leopard backup. i.e Create a 20GB partition for Mac OS X Lion (after of course BACKING UP my current Snow Leopard system). I would then still use Snow Leopard as my primary daily working system, but boot into Lion for testing. I will give this a lot more thought before I decide which way to go. But I would be very interested in your comments on which way I should go (watch it Daniel … if you suggest “where I should go, instead of which :-) Cheers, Ronni One of the best investments I have ever made was the little NewerTech Voyager hard drive dock which I bought from Daniel. This brilliant little device allows me to have a virtually unlimited number of hard drives at my disposal. The Voyager has a couple of Firewire 800 ports, in addition to a Firewire 400 and a USB 2 port (with an eSATA port to boot), so I always have access to the fastest backup technology available. Shortly after taking delivery of my nice shiny new 27 i5 iMac last week, the first thing I did was to take myself off to Austin Computers and pick a couple of new bare 1Tb hard drives for about $65 each. One of these is for my constant Time Machine backup, and the other is for a weekly clone using Carbon Copy Cloner. All I have to do is remember to pop out the Time Machine drive each Saturday night and drop in the clone drive, ready for the scheduled clone which will happen on Sunday morning at 9:00am. The point of all this is that upon the release of Lion, it will be an extremely simple process to get another drive purely for the purpose of testing Lion on a fresh clone of my hard drive AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE, and not have to worry about upsetting any current apple carts. Could someone point me in the right direction. Thanks Matt Yes, I agree that looking for practical help in assembling an effective Automator workflow is often a frustrating experience. Automator is a powerful technology, but its documentation appears to have been written by people who seem to assume that everyone already knows how to use it! I think the secret to success for you is in not looking for Image Capture actions specifically, but more in those actions you can apply once the scan is done. The Automator Image Capture Plugin workflow seems to be designed for use with digital camera acquisitions, but I don't see why it couldn't be used with scanning as well. I have just put together the following Automator workflow: Copy Finder Items [To Pictures] Open Images in Preview Apply ColorSync Profile to Images [Adobe RGB (1998)] Change Type of Images [TIFF] . I have saved this little workflow as an Image Capture Plugin called Test (note that Automator does not give you an option of where to save this, but that's OK - just save it). Now in Image Capture, the Scan To: popup menu has the added option Test as a destination, so if I were to choose that, presumably the workflow would be run. I have just put this workflow to the test and it works. It isn't perfect and there's probably more I could get it to do, but hopefully this will help to put you on a track of discovery. youtube - saving from
Hi everyone, When looking at a YouTube video: I used to look in, Activity in Safari, to find a YouTube file as it downloaded to the player, double click and it would open a blank tab download the file to Download, - now a Telstra page opens (http://o-o.preferred.telstra-mel1.v..) in a new tab and there is no download file to save. Has something changed recently? Yes I am with BigPond (and have recently upgraded to their 100gb package,) though I didn't think they could influence my requests as far as the download process went. Problems after update
G'Day all I hope no-one drowned in yesterday's rain. This morning I updated to 10.6.8 using the combo update. I repaired permissions prior to the update. The update appeared to install correctly but on the restart I had no dock. I repaired permissions again and did another restart with the same result. Going to the system preferences for the dock all the settings appear OK but response to opening items was very slow. Another problem that has arisen is with the desktop background, I had Apple's nature images as background set to change randomly at 1 minute intervals, they were changing at 1 second intervals so I have gone to solid colour. I have not tried any remedial action yet, has anyone any suggestions? Re: Problems after update
Thanks Ray, this was going to be one of my options. However, after a couple of restarts (one with power off for 15 minutes) with the same problem re-occurring I started in safe mode. Interestingly in safe mode looking at the dock (appledock) showed the option of turning hiding off, previously the option had been turning on and toggling had no effect. This time it restored the dock. Restarting normally all appears OK and the dock is back, I have the option to turn in on and off and screen background is now behaving. On of life's little mysteries I suppose. Regards Barry On 25/06/2011, at 12:56 PM, Ray Forma wrote: Barry, I have used the combo update to updated to MacOS 10.6.8 from MacOS 10.6.7.
