Re: iOS8

2014-09-19 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Susan,

Yes, I understand that the download is a 1.63GB size... So Laura can downloaded
in iTunes without any issue.
BUT, Laura has said she does not have enough room to actually "Install" the
update once it is downloaded in Itunes.

I had 17.30GBs Free before installing iOS 8 and after the installation
completed I had 16.0GBs Free. So Laura needs to have at least a few GBs of
Available space on her iPad to be able to Install and then actually be able to
Run/Use iOS 8.

Similar to a computer... More Free space the OS performers better.

I suggest you connect your iPad to your Mac.
I also then did a 'backup to Computer' first.

Sync your iPad to the computer and download iOS 8 directly from there.
This won't take up any space on your device, and you can manually
transfer the new software back to your device.
Updating via your Mac is more reliable way to upgrade, versus OTA
(over-the-air), which is performed directly on the device.

If you're taking this alternate route, be sure to select "check for

The latter option will indeed wipe all content from your device.

So what is the point in downloading the update if you can't install it?

The iOS 8 update won't install until you free up the necessary space on your
iPad so it can be installed.

I suggest you connect your iPad to your Mac.
I also then did a 'backup to Computer' first.

Sync your iPad to the computer and download iOS 8 directly from there.
This won't take up any space on your device, and you can manually transfer
the new software back to your device.
Updating via your Mac is more reliable way to upgrade, versus OTA
(over-the-air), which is performed directly on the device.

If you're taking this alternate route, be sure to select "check for
update" when the prompt pops up on iTunes — not "restore iPhone."
The latter option will indeed wipe all content from your device.

Re: iOS8

2014-09-19 Thread Susan Hastings
Hi Laura, it took less than half an hour for the iOS 8 update to download for
my husband’s iPad. I think it may be worth trying again in a day or so, which
will be well after the rush.

2014-09-19 Thread Laura Webb
Hi Ronni

I have 32GB and yes I know I should have gone for 64GB. If there is a next time
for me that's what I'll do. Whilst the 5.5GB requirement might be a friendly
reminder from Apple it is still, for now, preventing me from easily upgrading
to iOS8. Not sure the problem warrants buying a portable storage drive.

Thanks again.

Kind regards

Re: Review of the video capabilities of the iPhone 6+

2014-09-19 Thread Neil Houghton
Hehe even with my phone in my pocket, I kept missing calls with any sort
of background noise around ;o)

I was one of those who helped Pebble raise over $10 million on Kickstarter
so that solved that problem I must admit, I never get around to checking
what apps are available for the watch but it was worth it just for the phone
call vibration and the choice of nice watchfaces (and I needed a new watch
then anyway). Also, it¹s pretty cool reading SMSs on your watch ;o)

So, unless my Pebble dies, I¹ll probably wait until the iWatch gets to Mk2
or Mk3 before considering changing.

Given how long the commentators were predicting the watch was coming, and
the anticipation generated, I expect Apple will sell quite a few ;o)

Cheers

2014-09-19 Thread Ronda Brown
Yeah... And of course you know I had to upgrade from my beloved iPhone4-Steve
to a iPhone 6 Plus so I will be compatible with the AppleWatch when it is
released next year... ;-)

Nope, my iPhone has not arrived as yet... And yes, I might end up receiving
numerous iPhone 6 Plus iPhones :( thank God they are hard to get, so Apple
might only allow me to have ONE... I Hope...
Might need to sell my iPhone 4S-teve. I haven't told 'The Family' yet as I
always give my devices / computers / Time Capsules (all my technology) to
family or friends when I upgrade :(
This time I'm hoping to get some MONEY for my iPhone!!

Yeah I heard about the Chinese people doing the wrong thing as they have every
time a new iPhone is launched. Also Pushing ahead in the queue... very rude,
not the Aussie Way at all!
And then one that got caught was most upset and ranted and raved when taken out
of the line and taken away by the police... God almighty, they think they can
break the rules and always get away with it.

/End of Ronni's Rant

Re: Review of the video capabilities of the iPhone 6+

2014-09-19 Thread Susan Hastings
Hi Daniel and Ronni, I’ve decided on the 6 plus because of the camera/video
options with stabilisation. Also nice to have the bigger viewfinder.

OOPS! its supposed to be a phone and won’t fit into my pocket.

Which means I will need an Apple Watch so I can leave the iPhone in my handbag.
At least they are not being released at the same time and I will have time to
save for for the watch.

I pre-ordered online as quickly as possible on the 12th, but it was good to
actually have a look at both of the the iphones at Allphones at Belmont Forum
yesterday. They had the 4.7 iPhones for sale on plans with Vodafone. Lots of
great options and incredibly good value. Much more so than Telstra. Pity about
the coverage. We are also out of our contract and running on Telstra month by
month, but I prefer to buy the phone outright than sign up for a 24 month
contract. And have to stay with Telstra because we travel away from the city so
much and need the coverage.

cheers, Susan.

Re: iOS8

2014-09-19 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Laura,

Do you have a 64GB iPad?
If anything, the 5.7 GB requirement to update to iOS 8 is a friendly reminder
from Apple that you may need to splurge for the 64GB next time.

Perhaps you need to take a lot of 'stuff' off your iPad and onto a Portable
Wireless Storage LaCie FUEL Drive?

Cheers,
Ronni

Yep, we know better eh Ronni,….lol.
The money is better in our pocket then Telstra's,….lol.
Hope you enjoy your iPhone 6+. Too big for me I'm afraid,…but then you and i
work a little differently :o) hehe. And I think I'd be lost if it didn't fit in
my jeans pocket like normal!! lol ;)
(Might be different in 2015 with an iPhone 6s Plus and an AppleWatch :oP hehe.
;o)

We can save all the extra money we "save" by not being on plan and save it for
an AppleWatch,…..lol. :o) hehehe.

Did yours arrive on Friday on time? (or did you miss the date like you thought
you might do,…..)? (or did 6 turn up like you thought you may have done as
well,….lol.hehe).
Did you read about the "hawkers" paying $120 extra for others to buy phones to
take back to China etc. (Apparently were walking around $20,000 cash passing it
around to people to buy them for them,…to resell). Around $2000 selling back
over. (one customs person I read said one guy had over 20 phones going through
to claim back the GST and was holding up the queue for others,…).

Enjoy your new iPhone! :o))

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: iOS8

2014-09-19 Thread Laura Webb
Hi Ronni

Thanks for your advice. Not sure I am meant to have this upgrade!! I am aware
of the size but there is a requirement for 5.8GB to install the update. I have
3.4GB remaining. Yes I suppose I can delete items to gain more space but not
sure I want to do that.

Last evening I connected iPad to MBP, chose “download and update” from the two
options available i.e. download only or download and update. It started
downloading then advised there were 15 hours remaining. Surely it is not meant
to take that long. I cancelled and tried again this morning with the same
result, so left it alone thinking well if it takes that long, so be it. Came
back several hours later to find there was a message “an error has occurred”.
I think it is all too hard.

Kind regards
Laura

Re: Review of the video capabilities of the iPhone 6+

2014-09-19 Thread Daniel Kerr
Yes,.I already had Telstra call me to "upgrade" my plan to get a new iPhone 6
"for free". (and put me back on a 2 year contract).
It took me a while to get them to understand that to get the same features as I
have now, it would cost me $20 extra per month. ($240 per year,..$480 over the
2 year contract). Then take into account I then give my iPhone 5 to my wife and
sell her iPhone 4s 64Gb for around $350-$400 (seems to be what they're going
for),…that's a "total" of about $830 minimum. (I won't call it a "saving", as
it's not "technically" a saving per say,…lol. Which is pretty close to the
price of an iPhone 6 64GB at $999. So really it pays for itself mostly over
that 2 year period…..
I don't think they could follow my maths, (or perhaps my logic)….lol. I ended
up just saying,..thanks I won't worry about it,..lol.

Now I just have to actually find an iPhone 6 64GB that is in stock and can be
purchased outright. I was going to pre-order but I ued and ared about
the iPhone 6 versus the iPhone 6 Plus. Now I've read some more reviews and seen
them "live" and in videos, I'm sold on the iPhone 6 standard. It goes into my
pocket a lot better. And I don't think I'll miss the few "extra features" for
me anyway.

But they do look like quite a nice phone. (felt sorry for the Perth guy that
just got it and was showing it to the media and it fell out of his hand as he
was getting it out of the box on the pavement.. It's gone like wildfire around
the world showing him doing it. He's on the Whirlpool "Perth camp out" forum
I've been following. He said his phone is perfect and not marked, so wasn't an
issue, bar a bit red-faced,….lol. Lucky!

Enjoy!

Kind regards
Daniel

Re: iOS8

2014-09-19 Thread Daniel Kerr
Arrr man,…so you mean I shouldn't have put iOS8 on all my devices and
Yosemite 10.10 Public Beta build on all my computers…… "just for fun" :o))

Sorry, couldn't resist,…. :o)

(And yes, I advised a few of my clients to "just wait" a little for iOS8 to
see,….) ;o)
I know some Apps they have definitely wouldn't play well,…and it would be at
the most important moment they need it, it would stop working,…..

I only put iOS8 on my iPad,..not on my iPhone yet,…. :o) Still waiting to
see,…. ;o)

Enjoy

Kind regards
Daniel

Important Notice for IceTV users upgrading to iOS 8:

The IceTV app has compatibility issues on devices that have been updated to iOS
8.
An update to the IceTV app that fixes these issues will be available for
download from the App Store within the next week.

Again I stress people read my previous post the other day about waiting until
developers update their Apps to be compatible with iOS 8.

Cheers,

Re: iOS8

2014-09-19 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi Laura & Susan,

Susan, Laura mentioned she has insufficient free space on her iPad to download
over the air and install.
> I have insufficient space on my iPad to download the upgrade

Laura, the iOS 8 download size in 1.63GB

I suggest you connect your iPad to your Mac.
I also then did a 'backup to Computer' first.

Sync your iPad to the computer and download iOS 8 directly from there.
This won't take up any space on your device, and you can manually transfer the
new software back to your device.
Updating via your Mac is more reliable way to upgrade, versus OTA
(over-the-air), which is performed directly on the device.

If you're taking this alternate route, be sure to select "check for update"
when the prompt pops up on iTunes — not "restore iPhone."
The latter option will indeed wipe all content from your device.

If you have read my previous posts to the list: iOS 8 Users: Do Not Upgrade to
iCloud Drive
Apple hasn’t officially released Yosemite yet, iCloud Drive doesn’t work in
10.9 Mavericks, and upgrading your iCloud account to use iCloud Drive in iOS 8
is a one-way street — once you upgrade, you can’t go back to the old document-
and app-specific approach that’s compatible with Mavericks.
So when iOS 8 asks you to upgrade to iCloud Drive, tap Not Now.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: iOS8

2014-09-19 Thread Susan Hastings
Hi Laura, you don’t have to sync in order to do the update. It asks if you want
to do a backup first, but if you are already syncing with the The Cloud, you
can skip that step and just do the update.

This is speaking from experience, I freed up space on my iPad and did the
update over wireless, but connected my husband’s iPad to my Mac to do the
update.

I’m not sure what there is to grumble about really, just use one method or the
other. It was faster using my Mac.

Re: Silence?

I went and had a look at the iPhone 6 and 6+ this afternoon, just to see what
they look like in the flesh, so to speak. I have to say that I’m not sure I
like the new design. Has anyone else had a ‘hands on’?

iOS8

2014-09-19 Thread Laura Webb
I have insufficient space on my iPad to download the upgrade, I was interested
to read the following on the BBC News web site. It seems there are many just as
disgruntled as I am.

"Apple users can avoid the need to free up storage space for the latest update
by upgrading their software via iTunes on a Mac or PC, instead of through the
phone or tablet itself."

If I follow that suggestion does it mean that I would then Sync my iPad and
achieve the upgrade that way,

Any advice appreciated.

Regards
Laura
