Re: Apple Security Questions ?

2015-12-12 Thread Stephen Chape
Hi Kevin,
No it wasn’t … I tried for him also from my Mac and got the same responses.
Security Questions like “In which city was your first kiss?”.
Andrew is a NOT very mature 15 year old boy, so it makes no sense that he would
have set up that question in his Apple ID.

I get Security Questions from time to time when I log in, but I know mine and I
know the answers.

He has also been told (and me when I tried for him) that an email has been sent
to his “rescue email address”
Which neither of us can recall setting up.
So goodness knows where that is going ?

I have no suggestions for an immediate resolution, but there is always Apple
Support via telephone.Link to this doc (“If you forgot the answers to your
Apple ID security questions”) should help find the way forward.

2015-12-12 Thread Ronni Brown
Hi people,

Just a WARNING: I received a 'very poor’ Phishing attempt email.
Apple will NEVER use ‘Undisclosed Recipients’ to contact you - they always use
the customer’s correct email address.
And would NOT use Dear User,
And if you did click on the UPDATE HERE link - it would take you to a
tinyurl.com.xxx address… so DON’T click on it!

My Mail iCloud Account had automatically recognised it was Junk & placed the
email in the Junk Folder.
The email had arrived yesterday, but I only noticed it this morning when I went
to empty the Junk mailbox.

It’s definitely a phishing attempt and you should Delete it immediately
You could report it to Apple if you want - forward it as an attachment to
ab...@icloud.com

The email I received details were:

The email address is sent from: iCloud Customer care. (But if you check this
address it is a bogus address)

To: Undisclosed Recipients
The subject reads: iCloud Mail update

The message reads:
"Dear User,
Kindly update your account below to get more space on iCloud.

UPDATE HERE

Thanks."
———

I don’t think anyone on WAMUG would be fooled by this email, but just in case I
thought I better warn members.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: What is process PID 208?

2015-12-12 Thread Ronda Brown
Hi Alan,

The install on my MBA only took 6mins... this was a really fast install.
You will notice it does 2 or 3 restarts and on my MBA I heard the Firmware Beep
on the last restart.
So don't worry if you see the Black Screen a few times, just let the installer
complete until you see the login screen.

Once the install has completed and you login.
Run Software Update (as you always should after an update install) and the
OS X El Capitan Recovery Update 1.0 (475MB) will show for you to download &
install.
iTunes 12.3.2 (117MB) also was showing to be installed.

No problems experienced during the install and no problems expended since
installing the combo update on my MBP & MBA.

Cheers,
Ronni

Re: What is process PID 208?

2015-12-12 Thread Alan Smith
Hi Ronni

No cricket on TV, so a longer response - - -.

Activity Monitor displays ACTIVE processes. PID 208 is/was not active so I
could not determine the process name. Syslog inferred a problem with an
application or process associated with PID 208. The message is rather cryptic
- insert commas to get a different meaning! I looked at syslog because of
unusual behaviour of the iMac: I am not (completely) obsessed with syslog, but
I do like to find rational explanations for computer problems.

I am preparing for the anticipated release of El Capitan 10.11.2 Combo update.
“Fix problems, get apps up to date, and make a backup” was the mantra learned
from WAMUG.

Over the last few days I have made changes to my system and network. I
modified and moved my voip modem so it is now working as just an ethernet voip
phone adapter. Time Capsule talks directly to the NBN unit. Firewalls on the
iMacs have been made active, essentially with default settings. I replaced
DuckDuckGo with Google as the active browser. As a consequence I have been
looking closely at computer performance. The computer and network have been
working very well and I was ready for a backup - until “something" happened
just before lunchtime.

Before I started the backup task I had attempted a Google browser search (in
Safari) but the query hung. First time ever for me - Google usually finds x
trillion references within a fraction of a second. Did I use the Google Killer
phrase? No problem with my search immediately afterwards using different words
or with their order changed. I then started a SuperDuper backup. iMac
appeared to be slow to load the external disk and then SuperDuper took several
seconds to display its initial data entry window.

Viewing syslog showed the strange message about PID 208. The entries probably
started from around the time the Google browser hung. I could not find any
answers on the Apple or other technical websites about PID 208. Hence I
thought a question to WAMUG would help.

Now to see if SBS TV is anywhere near as interesting as the Console logs.

Cheers
Alan

He hee Rob,
At least you can understand the TV shows... Logs require a lot of knowledge to
be able to 'read and interpret' them.

Hi Alan,

Just a quick reply. I don’t know why you are so obsessed with viewing System
Logs…

Each application on your Mac has an associated Process ID (a PID) and a
user-friendly name.

The benefit of Activity Monitor is it allows you to view system processes,
background tasks, and applications running in user accounts, and obtain their
process IDs (PID) to further manage the process, if necessary.

Cheers,
Ronni
